Rooky Room (or the endless domain purchasing fiasco)

Hi all. My head is spinning and reading around note that many others have the same experience in the beginning.

How many hours have I been reading? Well, I don't know. Seems like about 2 weeks ago my life stopped. BIG plans afoot, sure. I have been reading about IM for 2 weeks solid, including weekends, all day, and into the night. (I work from home anyway, just finished big writing project, don't have another one scheduled to begin until the end of March so tight deadline to get a nice site up and running). My head hurts. I caught the flu (which I have now) and thought...from stress overload. I'm very very excited but getting disappointed, too.

So I thought I would start a thread to offer some advice (yep, advice) that I have learned the hard way already.

--DO NOT go into a domain buying spree. I did this. Kept thinking of new and better domains, then grabbing up so competition couldn't buy competing terms for 2 businesses. Guess what? I realized...you can't buy all of the possibly competitive domain names. This is NOT possible. Don't believe me? Make a list, don't buy anything, keep adding to the list for a week or so. Then you will see what I mean. AND after I bought all of those domains, I thought of *the best* domain for one of the two businesses...can't believe I didn't consider it before, so, alas, I still have to buy another domain name but that will be IT!

--try to pace yourself.

--take action, which I've started doing, but hard to stop yourself from researching the next Q.

--Don't be too quick to pull out your CC#. There are lots of offers.

Anyone else have any lessons learned to add?

I feel stupid but thought my domain experience might help someone.

I think like many other things you have to balance money coming in with money going out. Yes, you need some investment to get started, but really not a whole lot.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

The problem is that there are endless amounts of products and offers for sale to people like myself (just starting with very little clue).

I guess I must be starting to get some clue but still seems like an impossible mountain to climb. Example; lots of sites offer paid training for varying amounts, and paid training for various services, plus the software to do "things" like wordtracking and spinning and probably a thousand other things that I haven't discovered yet.

So far I have purchased domain names, artiseer software, about to sign up for hosting account. I am also considering purchase of joomla training course b/c I want a jazzy looking website, but that could be a mistake bc I know everyone prefers WP.

And of course this is all BEFORE SEO, which I realize is a completely different animal (although linked because you have to optimize the site design for SEO, which with joomla itself is a scary prospect).

Anyone see any obvious shortcomings in my plan who might be willing to share? I've already committed mentally to spending the next however long it takes to make this work and learn what I need to learn...so I just figure my current headache will eventually subside.
