How to create videos with white background?

I see on same of the really good sales pages it will have a person talking with a pure white background...and it doesnt look like a sheet...it looks too clean for that. It almost looks like they removed the backgound out somehow. How do they do this. Who does this kind of stuff?

Go download Open Office and use the presentation slides. It gives you pure white backgrounds. Use a program like Camtasia to do the screen capture. While your recording make your slide show full screen and you will get the same effect.

Likely a green screen behind them. Adobe After Effects can be used to isolate the green and change it to solid white by washing it out to a high level. As long as the person talking isn't wearing a green shirt or something it should only effect the background.

They use green because it is a color that can usually be isolated without effecting the foreground in a lot of scenes.

Damn James you beat me to it. I must type really slow lol

Oh yeah that might be a green screen. If not the green screen then some high cost production stuff. Nothing me or you have at our house right now.

Or you could just paint your wall green and point a really bright light at it behind you lol. Really though, if you put your mind to it you can probably come up with some type of setup to get your background green. It just needs to be a solid green material.

I've also seen it done with solid black backgrounds too. Many are done with paper and masking tape. You can buy a 3 foot wide roll of solid green paper a roll of masking tape and a roll of two sided tape pretty cheap.

Hey Joseph, you don't need the embed code on this forum. Just use the Youtube link and it will show up as a video in your post.

Interesting video. I have never done it with Sony Vegas even though I have used it for a long time. After Effects is typically more robust as far as options and control over your scene but Vegas is definitely cheaper, pretty cool it can do that.

The guy in the video looks to have an actual green screen behind him by the way even though he doesn't mention it. Your footage needs to have that solid background within it for the effect to work. You can buy green screens, they are almost like the roll down screens for projectors you see in school. Hmm...do they still use projectors in school?

Green screen technology. However, you can use what I like to call a poor man's green screen if you have a wall painted a dark solid color. You can stand in front of that wall to speak and then use software to wipe away the color. Just make sure that whatever clothes you have on clash with the color of the wall so that they don't end up getting removed by the software.

I know from some of the videos I've watched that some IM (internet marketing) folks actually just have a really well lit white wall. I forget which pair of IM guys it was, but they were talking about having just come from their "white room". They said they like the white background, because it doesn't provide unnecessary distractions.

As the old saying goes, "There's more than one way to skin a cat". As IMers, we should know that's true, just look at the many different ways there are to make money online. (Before anyone says it, I know, I know "just products and services". Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I'm saying.)

My point is that with sufficient, bright light, you may be able to achieve your desired effect without having to break the bank to do it. (The reason the light needs to be bright is to diffuse the shadows and trick the eye into not seeing corners and crevices. It also has to come from many directions to avoid unwanted shadows.)

The option offered by Jesus Perez looks like it would work well without being too expensive as long as you have a place to set it up and to store it.

Good luck with your video projects.

How hard is it to remove or change the background once the video is shot? Also Im assuming the lighting has to be pretty good for this to work out properly?

Not hard at all with the right software. Like the video Joseph linked to above, you can do it pretty easily with Sony Vegas. The trick is your background needs to have zero detail and be just one solid color. No shadows, nothing. Best way to achieve that is to direct lighting right at whatever backdrop you have to eliminate any wrinkles or anything showing up in the video. This is another reason why green works better. Bright lights usually create a white highlight around the edges of your clothes, hair and arms which will end up being a noticeable bleed of color if you input a digital background.

It can be a little tricky to get the settings just right. But, once you have a perfect solid background the software can identify and remove whatever color is behind you then fill that color with a background image or even other video footage. (not sure Sony Vegas can do video behind but After Effects definitely can)

Maybe you can go for black background instead of white?
You can use black fabric. It is cheaper, isn't it?

Guys, been trying to put my chroma video into my WP site index, but so far just a big... bad... nada.

It works flawlessly in HTML, but when I add up the code to index.php (and header) it goes bezerk. Anyone experienced with this?

    Hey

the white background videos do look really good, similar to how Apple do their product launch videos.

A friend of mine who you may know, Gideon Shalwick, has created a cool video showing you how to do it (i have embedded it here) and you DON'T always need a green screen to get this effect.

If you want just a pure professional white background in your videos, you don't need to spend too much on green screens and computer software and editing. Just have a white fabric (the same ones they use at ID shops) and just have excellent lighting equipment while shooting. That should produce really white backgrounds for your videos.
