Best Revenue Strategy for News Site

I run a news site for a town in NJ that gets about 2,000 unique vistors per week and we are making about $75 per month off Adsense.

Any recommendations for something that would generate better revenue without turning all of our posts into product promotions? We are a new site after all, and might benefit more from some banner/sidebar ads that actually produce better.

      Most news sites make their money from ads.

      Since your site seems to target local audience, you could try to sell advertising space to local businesses. They will probably pay you more money per ad slot than advertisers outside your local area.

    Try to sell banner ads to local business.

    I have tried the following method and it works:
    I made a list of 10 reputed local businesses in a niche (ex: carpet cleaning).
    Then approached the first firm and offered them one week Banner Ad free of charge. Then started visiting others in the list showing my website with competitor's ad. Offered him a special price for 6 months Ad placement. In the second try, I got an order and as a bonus I removed the banner of his competitor and placed his banner instead. This was little bit tricky. You can try something similar.

      With Adsense we are making about $1.90 per thousand impressions. Since I'm new to IM, I'm not even sure if that's good, but I feel like we could be doing better.

      lol, great strategy with the free offer! Usually people use free offers to turn the users into customers. You use it to convert their competition. Cool.
