Creating Google and YouTube accounts - naming?

I'm starting to create Google accounts for each of my sites, which will all have a YouTube account (and channel) linked to them. The problem I'm having is that, as far as I'm aware, you have to use a "real" name for your Google account, otherwise Google will shut it down as soon as they find it. But then, because Google is so heavily linked to Youtube now, my Youtube account get's given the name of my Google account, and if I create a channel, the channel gets that name as well. For example:

1. Create Google account under name "John Smith"
2. Create YouTube account when logged into "John Smith" Google account
3. Create a YouTube channel in the new account, it automatically gets called "John Smith's Channel", with seemingly no way to change

Obviously, I would like me keyword to be in my Youtube channel. What do the rest of you do here??

    It sounds like you want use YouTube as a brand...

    1. Get a gmail account or log-in into one that you already
    have..

    2. go to YouTube

    3. OK so now you are at YouTube and logged into your gmail account

    4. Look for the my channel link
    ( if you click on your email address at the very top, you
    should be able to find it)

    5. So now you have clicked the my channel link
    a box on the far right will pop up it will say

    "How you'll appear on YouTube"

    at the very bottom you will see...

    " Would you like to appear on YouTube as a different name,
    brand or organization? Create a username"

    click create a username if you want use YouTube as Brand

    and when I am trying to register a few accounts I usually use namechk
    to make sure the user names are available

      Seriously, I don't get anything like that. All I get is options to add a description, add links etc. There is absolutely nothing about branding my YouTube channel... it seems like it's all interconnected with the Google+ profile I created.

      I went back, deleted my channel, and tried again... and now I see what you are talking about, thank you! I don't understand why they have to make it so unfriendly.

    Then I tried uploading a video.

    When you upload your first video on youtube,
    it will give you the option to choose a username/channel name.

    . . .And that's when you could go in and customize it.

      Nope, nothing has changed.

      This is ridiculous, why do they always have to screw everything up...
