Something that took me from 40k to 100k/mo back in 2006

Back in 2006 and 07... I was consistently banking 40k or higher each month. The way I was making 40k or so per month back then was:

-- selling affiliate offers (like click bank and other affiliate offers)
-- marketing my own niche ebooks for like $5 or $10 per sale
-- copywriting for gurus (damn gurus, lol)
-- membership sites

The way I was getting traffic was the following:

-- for affiliate offers, I drove traffic via Adwords and PPC and CPV to my own squeeze pages (building niche lists) and then passing them on to the affiliate sales letter (earning commissions). Then, I'd continue marketing to them via my lists (more affiliate offers). I'd give them free tips and mix in sales pitches along the way via my lists.

-- for my niche ebooks, I mostly sent traffic via the same ways as above... and would sell like 20 to 50 ebooks a day (for $5 to $10 a pop)

-- copywriting came from marketing myself (doing interviews, striking deals and reaching out to those I wanted to build relationships with -- gurus in the IM market)

-- membership sites mostly got traffic from affiliates who promoted them and some paid traffic as well and a little integration.

Final result, around 40k+ per month

I wanted to hit a million per year back then. I wanted to reach 80k to 100k per month within a year. I set a goal to get there in a years time. Two things got me there WAY earlier than the year's goal.

(one)

I learned from Matt Gill about building up a backend... a sales funnel and how to do that right. I did it. I added up-sells to my niche ebooks... I got INSTANT BIG RESULTS! It like quadrupled my income virtually over night for my niche ebook sales.

Plus, it did something else HUGE too. Before, lets say I paid $200 per day in paid traffic. Well, now, since I had that sales funnel and back end sales in the funnel, I earned more instantly and could spend more on traffic. So, I was easily more confident to spend much more than $200 per day.

AND, I was able to bid more on each click! so, if I was spending .20 cents per click and ranking 6th or 8th on PPC, I was now able to bid higher and place 1st or 2nd or 3rd on the placements (BTW, I often went for placing 3rd because I converted more at 3rd than 1st. I think that's because people click a couple ads first before making a buying decision and being 3rd got me more sales)

So, I was able to spend more per day and spend more per click because even if I broke even on the front end, I made more profits on the back end and my niche lists exploded!

This alone got me from around 40k to around 100k per month! BAM

(second)

next thing I did was plan of attack for getting more affiliates for my membership sites. I reached out to a big guru in the market, you all know who he is, ok he's Mike Filsaime and I asked him to partner with me if he would help me get more affiliates to promote my membership site.

I did not really know the game of recruiting affiliates back then... although I did know plenty of gurus through my copywriting strategy. I was just not confident to "ask" them to promote for me back then.

He agreed. (Thank God!)

So, back then in 2007, that partnership alone got me to that 100k level ALONE. In other words, just the business I did with him was easily 100k+ per month.

Therefore, two things stand out looking back to 2006 and 2007... adding in back-ends and sales funnels... and increasing traffic from both paid traffic and affiliates. Also, looking back I realize that I had what it takes to recruit affiliates, I was just timid to do so.

So, dont be timid to recruit affiliates. And, add in up-sells and back end offers. Don't be afraid to pay for traffic, if you can convert (conversions are the name of the game).

Lastly, I know... I know... I already know... you do not even have to say it... (But, but, but Eric... I hate when gurus sell me up-sells. I just hate it. I also hate videos without controls and I hate recruiting affiliates and I hate paid traffic and I hate everything)

Well, there are other careers too. Try SEO or back-linking or article marketing and check back with me in a year or two and let me know how your fortunes are going then

Just highlighting this because this @#$% works!

Good old Marlon Sanders was pounding it into my head to continually create products until I hit my income goals (or exceeded them). When I finally let his advice sink in, it radically changed my bottom line.

      Awesome! Thanks for sharing.

I am planning on doing the paid traffic thing to squeeze pages full blown this year as well. Does it still work well? I suppose it's harder with Adwords now.

Cheers Eric, always nice to see you post.

        I am also.

I hear lots of people talk about it, but few of them mention Google Adwords... I don't know if that should be considered significant or not.

Actually I've done it with Adwords for a few niches recently and it worked well but the problem is optimizing takes time and lots of money only to be slapped a few months down the line. So I'm wondering if anyone still does this continuously without any issues.

          Cheers

As long as you are willing to play according to google's rules you can play; otherwise, they will spank you.

I suggest you look for other paid traffic methods (plenty of them have been discussed on the forum and work great.) As far as the method outlined by Eric it has worked, is working and will always work.

            Hey my man, thanks...

IMO, Google Adwords sucks and really do not like them anymore because they ban us or slap us and cause us so many problems with Adwords. However, there are many other games in town, not just adwords. Bing is a good one. Then there are many secondary platforms like pulse360.com, trafficvance.com (CPV), mediatraffic.com (CPV), clicksor, etc etc etc

I tend to contact account managers with those platforms and see what kinds of traffic packages they have (try it). For example, clicksor has always been a platform where many say the traffic is not good, but I got a package that did very well compared to simply going the minimum and traditional route.

The point is, if you *focus* on paid traffic... and stick to it... and be consistent over a long period of time, you'll win and never go back to the *other* ways. The problem is most never stick to anything at all.

If I spent 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, on paid traffic, for an entire year, I would have put in like 1000 hours per year or more into paid traffic. At the end of that year, I'd be a master at paid traffic!!

At that point, six figures would be a slam dunk and seven figures would be reachable and realistic to you at that point. I guarantee it. Problem is most never stick to one thing very long at all and quit so quickly that they never figure out the game.

Lastly, you do not have to start with 1k per day in traffic, you can start with $10 per day. If you consider your dollars-per-hour to be $10 per hour, that's just one hour per day. With that thought, what do you spend an hour on each day that can bring this kind of results?

In other words, an hour per day spent writing articles and submitting them versus an hour spent managing, tweaking and testing your ad spend of $10 per day? Which is more valuable? Which would bring you more results? Which would get you "there" quicker?

OR... an hour spent on paid traffic versus an hour spent on articles versus an hour spent recruiting affiliates to promote for you?? Which wins?

        Eric,

Do you still use ppc traffic? If so, who do you use? Did you get slapped by Google Adwords or have you been able to keep your account with them? Thanks. Also, do you do media buys or just stick with the search engines?

For those who do not believe this, I believe the way to think about his is this: Do these same people believe that *NO* businesses out there on planet Earth do that much revenue?? I mean, when you look at some business in some big office building, with a big sign on the building and hundreds of cars parked in the parking lot, is it not true that business does this much -- if not MUCH-MUCH more?

Basically, people will think it's not true if they look at me (or others) as individuals who sit around in our pajamas and make money by clicking buttons. Instead, those who generate that kind of money almost ALWAYS do it with the help of other people. (programmers, content creators, customer service, partners, affiliates, bookkeepers, admin, project managers, etc).

Sure, many do this kind of revenue with maybe 3 outsourced helpers and 100 affiliates. Or, 5 helpers and thousands in paid traffic. The list goes on.

And, in this market... this *business* has a huge profit margin (digital products)... so profits are huge compared to other traditional businesses. Anyway, you are right though... many always think it's BS. That's ok, I love all God's children. (except refunders). jk

You should always be working both sides of the fence....Yes, it's easier to promote products/services as an affiliate! However, if you challenge yourself to pump out 1 new product whether it be an e-book, wso product, or even clickbank product, you will be amazed with your results....Plus, it's a nice feeling when affiliates court you to promote your products!

That's easy... fine tune and test your systems until you are profitable at a smaller number, then scale up. Start with $100 - $500 make money from your backend like Eric said and then keep dumping your profits into more advertising.

A lot of people would rather spend their profits on other things, but if they just re-invested everything you'd be making $40K per month a lot easier.

Take Eric's advice and just scale it down until you reach a managable number that you're comfortable with to start. It's not about having someone MAP out everything start to finish.. you will have to think a little and make decisions depending on the outcome of your tracking and testing...
