Hi there. In your experience, what is the best "Tell a Friend" script like what Facebook uses and why do you think it is the best? Do you know of an ebook and/or website that gives help on this subject?

Thanks!

This would depend on your experience. I would prefer the Viral Friend Generator by Mike Filsaime. I have 3 different versions of the script and it works great.

I read somewhere that Mike was giving the script away in a promotion, maybe search google see if you come up with anything you might just save $97.00. I also use Viral Inviter over at http://www.magnetic-marketing-toolkit.com which is my Dan Kennedy licensed product site. This script allows everyone to insert their email address books as well to send emails loaded with thier affiliate links from my site.

It works like the myspace, facebook script. I cant say they are brilliant, I am always worried about spam but haven't had a problem yet.

If it's just a plain tell a friend script you will get a free one on the net.

Ive got ViralInviter ... filsaime may pimp it, but it appears to me Norman Freeman and his team support it/wrote it. Ive had to use their support - which was good btw ... considering theire in germany and im in so cal.

Here's my take after playing with it a fair bit.

If your user base is using email clients like GMail / Yahoo - meaning web based clients - it will probably yield better results.

For the whizbang effects of a TAF script like LinkedIn/FaceBook use - the users must WANT to dig into their email client contact database and supply your script with their username/email address and password??? After seeing the vids and getting very pumped ... I soon hit earth with a thud when I realized that - your incentive to get them to part with sensitive data like that had better be powerful.

I was further kicked back into reality with the fact that most of my users would be using desktop based email clients - outlook/express. They steps a user must got through to export their database, then import it into the viral inviter - killed the viability for 90+% of my initial target audience.

Business owners - not too savvy to the cloud computing - online hosted email client solutions ....

All is not lost though ... Like Filsaimes own Viral Friend Generator - which looks to be immensly easier to implement than Viral Inviter ... you can set it up to allow users to MANUALLY add a few friends to invite. I had to get the suport folks do that for me - set the script up so the Manually Add friends interface was the default, with the option for people who use LinkedIn/Google Mail/Yahoo Mail etc ... to do the whizbang log into the online account and select 100 users to invite.

I wanted the ViralInviter script for its ability to track inviters/visitors and dish out the prize emails with links and attachments. That is its strengths.

      good luck!

The problem with Tell-a-Friend scripts is that they can get you in trouble for spamming... Aweber has been known to shut down accounts for people with pages with tell a friend scripts.

As a result I've been using a javascript thing that takes an email address and pops up the user's email client to actually send the email from their computer instead of through my server. That approach has the added advantage that a user can add additional names from their own email list.
