buy a bigger package with more resources. You bought a certain amount of resources from HG and you are using more than that. I am not sure what you are looking for us or HG to do.

I use both of those things on Hostgator.... but I have a dedicated server. If you are using too many resources then you are using too many resources. There are no two ways about it. Upgrade to a VPS plan or a dedicated server.

If you are driving a lot of traffic - it is best to NOT use a shared hosting package. Go for a high-end dedicated server or a cloud pay-as-you-grow package.

If HostGator says you are using too much resources it will be the same story with any other shared hosting plan with a different company. If you require these plugins for your business then you need to move to a VPS or dedicated server.

I'm pretty sure HostGator doesn't want you streaming media from their shared/reseller environment. I guarantee you it states in the TOS somewhere about streaming media is not allowed.

I dont stream from HG I stream from AWS ???? Didnt I already freaking say that?? S3Flowsheild is for Amazon S3 I wouldn't dare stream from HG that would ruin my business. I have 300-500 people at a time watching videos that would suck for them

No need to catch an attitude. All I saw was flowshield + 4 videos so I assumed you had 4 videos on your site, my mistake.

Obviously you are running something that is consuming too much resources, so again UPGRADE. It doesn't matter what reseller plan you have, the resources are still the same EXCEPT disk space & bandwidth.

The only solution I have for you is:

          A. Go to another host.
          B. Upgrade to a VPS.

/unsubscribed. Take your problems up with HostGator. It's a reseller account, not a VPS or dedicated sever. Shared + reseller are the same environment, same rules.

Aside from your rant, I'm not sure what you really expect anyone here to do...

Apparently, anything but tell him the reality of the situation.

Maybe he wants commiseration, or someone to tell him how he's being wronged. Or just to take a slap at Hostgator for not meeting his unrealistic expectations. (How DARE they!?)

                Azmanar,
In any gathering, we need a certain level of decency, acceptable to the majority.
Or at least to the host.

This is one of the big reasons we don't allow bashing of other forums here. The social boundaries and community standards for discussion are the business of the owners of those forums. We have no business getting involved in arguments about how people talk on someone else's property.

The variety in standards allows almost everyone to find places that fit their personal preferences, while letting the owners of the various sites maintain their right not to support speech they find personally offensive.

I'm fairly confident that simplybeastz wouldn't let people on one of his sites bash him personally, or act in ways that could destroy the site. That is, according to his standard, censorship.

The question is not "Is censorship in a private discussion forum appropriate." It's just a matter of what topics are censored and how much. Most people tend to view that through the lens of their own preferences or convenience. That is perfectly fine on your own site, but it's not something anyone can reasonably expect to enforce on another's property.

                Cali,
I can only imagine how many hundreds of times per day you do this while you're moderating this forum...
I wouldn't say hundreds. But sometimes a dozen or more.

You say above you have a reseller account.

Did you know that you have to set the amount of disk space and bandwidth you use on each account, even your main account?

The default is something like 500 meg each. Don't hold me to that number, however I do know the default number is low compared to the amount you actually can use.

You go into cpanel and find the bandwidth and disk space usage and set it up higher.

Sorry if you know this and have already done it, just wanted to explore another option.

      MHdeaton,

I don't think it's wise to use Dedicated Server, unless your income is higher than your expenses. Not suitable for those who are starting out with a small capital.

With that amount you're paying for the shared hosting, you can get a basic VPS already.

In VPS, probably you'll be sharing with 20 guys or less in the same server. Not 200 guys like you're on currently.

Also move out from Hostgator. MOVE OUT.

Don't do this. Did you even read the reviews at the end of the thread? Site always down, support missing & hasn't even responded to the post since January 4th.

OP - I put a link for WiredTree. If you can do the 50 bucks a month, which would be what your reseller plan is, I would recommend you look into moving. WiredTree is one of the most reputable VPS/Hybrid companies out there.

          Hi Kingfish,

Yep. I read every single thread from page 1 to page 13. More satisfied clients than the disgruntled ( incidentally from a single server ). By the way, I'll always try to promote offers from Warriors first and then others.

But the offer by WiredTree is mouth-watering. Thanks.

We do have a solution for you and it's been given by most people in this thread. If you're websites are using too many resources then you need to change your hosting plan, simple. It's your only option. This will mean going over to a VPS or dedicated server. I believe Hostgator will help you with the transfer of one account from memory.

It seems to be harsh for Host Gator to tear down websites when they have exceeded the resource limit. Do they warn you when you get near the limit? I use GDI as my web host and never seen anything like that there.

Not really, what if you where another customer on the same server that the guy that's using all of the resources are on??

You are not violating any rules and you pay the same amount as anyone else, but all of a sudden your sites are all down???

This is why they cannot send any warnings or allow you to keep the site online because it would bring down every other account on the server.

So the wise rout is to bring down 1 account to save a hundred others. You are not permanently banned all you have to do is make the changes and your suspension will be lifted.

I can't count how many times customers tried to argue their point when they are just wasting time rather than just fixing the issue and have it solved in a couple of hours (I'm an ex employee btw).

So, you think HG should give those folks resources that they aren't paying for instead? If I buy 4 apples at the grocery store, should they let me take 10 more for free?

I assume your first port of call was Hostgator, so what did they say? I've always found them to be very responsive.

When you say they "shut me down", what exactly do you mean?

I've had HG shared hosting accounts which got temporarily disabled due to chewing up too much CPU. It was a simple matter of contacting HG and working out where the problem was and resolving the whole matter in less than 30 mins.

Hostgator is usually great but because of the severity of my situation I called them this time and the guy/girl I got was so useless it reminded me of Paul Meyers, I mean absolutely NO HELP I was tortured by this person for 38 minutes before I got a manager to tell me that DAP Live links and S3 Flow sheild plugins were causing the excessive CPU resource usage.

So its not bandwidth its CPU resources.

They dont know exactly whats going on they can only refer me to the culprit - I have a trouble ticket into both S3Flowshield and Digital access pass and we'll see what they say - maybe Ill let everyone know what the problem was.

Everyone but you seems to know what the problem is - you need to upgrade hosting for the resources you are using. Pretty simple - frustrating perhaps, but simple.

It's not their job to know what's going on with scripts you run on your site. They only sell you server space. They may consider managing your website for you as well...IF YOU PAY THEM TO DO THAT.

They are not your webmaster. You only buy server space from them...that's it.

If you install something that is not configured correctly or efficiently...that is your problem. If you install something that uses more server resources than you paid for...that is your problem not theirs.

HG did nothing wrong. They did you a favor by explaining what scripts were causing you to use more resources than you paid for. They don't even have to tell you that. That is really your job.

I can promise you one thing, no host is going to let you use more resources than you pay for.

The best advice I can give you should you experience a similar problem in the future is to work with Hostgator. Their online chat reps have limited access to information but are normally more than willing to open a ticket on your behalf (and will even escalate it for you) if they can't help you.

Furthermore, the real cause of the problem is often not apparent at first but since your site may be compromising other sites on the same server it's normal that they will take immediate action and try to solve the problem afterwards.

I had a similar problem recently. At first Hostgator thought the culprit was a WP plugin. But, in turned out that in my case it was more than likely a bot that caused all the trouble.

This is part of the message from Hostgator:

As you can see, the surge was well over 10 times the amount of traffic you normally get. This does happen every once in a while, and it usually indicates something along the lines of a bot trying to gain access or find typical exploits. However, it stopped almost immediately and has not returned.
I find that if you are patient and willing to work with Hostgator to find the cause of the problem they will go out of their way to help you.

Censorship is not the answer and will never be.
Censorship on private property is entirely appropriate. I don't allow certain types of speech in my home, for example.

If we allowed everyone to say whatever they wanted, this place would degenerate into chaos, pure nastiness, and spam in no time. Preventing that is the function of moderation.

If you don't like that, you are free to start your own forum and let anyone post whatever they want. See how long it stays useful.

Every time you get some information here that helps you, stop and think if it would have been available without the members who report spam and other infractions, or the mods who delete the stuff. Or if you would even have been here to look for it if the site was full of nothing but rants, ads, and idiots trying to sabotage other people.

I would say invest in your own server like i did. Worth every penny.

If your stuck right now, and you can still access your old files, then set up a free host and quickly point your new domain there.

You started the thread with a poorly-worded request for advice (or maybe a rant - that's kind of how it read).

Next, you ignore all of the advice that's been given (perhaps because it was a rant, afterall).

Finally, when someone says that he's tired of the thinly disguised rants, you attack him.

I'd ban you if I could.

I agree it was poorly worded at the start - you got that spot on. Thats because of the urgent nature of of the last 2 days of a sale at $397.00 a pop, my usually best selling time and HG shuts me down.

I went on to say it was "CPU resources"...(With only 4 videos up so far and only 200 members this is highly unusual - its an error in a script or plug-in - has to be)

I then went on to to ASK if anyone has had CPU resource issues with DAP or S3flowshield

Clearly I'm just asking for HELP.

Its not bandwidth, or typical resources like that, its an issue with DAP Livelinks and S3flowshield which begets the ?????? I have.

Which I was hoping someone else may have had because LIKELY its not an isolated issue of MY OWN and MAYBE being that this is the forum that it is, MAYBE someone might have had a similar issue and could shed some light on it for me.

YES it was badly worded at the start but IM NO IDIOT, just hoping maybe someone had a similar issue and would know what could be done to fix it as fast as possible.

Waiting on support tickets can drag on for 2-3 days going back and forth. and that SUCKS

Does DAP Livelinks and/or S3flowshield have a support system/forum? That's where I'd look next if I wasn't willing to upgrade to a dedicated server. However, if you're losing (making) $397 per day, you can certainly afford a dedicated server.

The OP was emotional when he started the thread. The situation (regardless of the cause) led to that.

If he'd attacked another member the way he attacked Paul, he'd be gone. Paul has thick skin, though.

The OP edited his attack post. Let it go.

          Frank,
probably not a great career move on the WF to tell the chief moderator to Butt Out!
Just for the record, there is no "chief moderator" here, unless you're referring to Allen. And as for the more extreme comment, which he has now edited, he was safer saying that to me than anyone else. If he'd said that to any other member here he'd have had a few weeks off.

          mhdeaton,
I probably spend $500 a month on this forum in WSO's alone.
How is that relevant? One assumes you spend that for your own benefit, so stopping the investment would hurt you, not anyone else.

And, just in case you weren't aware, that money isn't spent with the forum. Not that it makes any difference to me. Not my money in any case.
Id like to kick your ass!
And that would prove... what? That you let your anger and frustration make decisions for you?

When you buy hosting, you are getting some combination of essentially 4 resources: Bandwidth, disk space, ram, and CPU cycles. You're exceeding the limit on at least one of those, probably one or both of the last pair. When you push the limit on your share of the chips, the other sites hosted on that machine take a performance hit. So, they don't allow it. You knew that, of course. Just restating it to get back some perspective.

Which part of that do you think anyone here can do anything about?

If you had asked this in the programming section, you might have gotten a useful answer. There are some very sharp people in there, and they are generally very helpful.

If it's an issue with those scripts, their support teams may be able to help you. But it may simply be that you're asking too much of the iron you're renting. And yeah, you usually won't find that out until the least convenient time.

Take a deep breath and figure out the fastest way to fix this to salvage what sales you can. That is very likely the first thing that was suggested: Upgrade your server account. Do that, and HG can probably get you back up and running in a matter of minutes, rather than days of waiting on support.

Frustration can get to any of us. Do you remember this particular member ever behaving like this before? I don't. Not in the 3 years he's been here. So, a little leeway is appropriate.

I am seriously concerned with the anger and demands and entitlement that have become the ruling tone of late. It's gotten so ridiculous that people seem to think it's okay to swear at each other over the tiniest things, start PM/infraction wars over no more than a poor choice of words, and even openly recommend piracy.

If it's the same level of account, check the settings. And do a quick comparison of the traffic levels and filetypes.

That should be all you need to figure out where the problem is, barring some external interference, like a hacked WP set-up.

I had a slightly similar experience when HG temporarily turned of one of my sites for using too many resources. It was a very simple WP site that was getting maybe 20 visitors per day. It was an online backup plugin that had been updated but I hadn't updated it on my site so it was incompatible and constantly tried to contact the site.

A simple update fixed it, my guess would be something similar here if your running the same type of thing on other sites with no problem.

Just contact their live chat to help you figure it all out and suggest a solution. Or try another, bigger hosting company but I think hostgator is one of the bests.

UPDATE: I can see you already contacted someone. I had the same issue, some people are just more helpful there than other. Maybe next time you'd get a better person to help you.

Kelly its actully cost me over $10,000 becuase Im doing about $10k a day this was a launch so I do big numbers to my whole list. I sent support tickets to both and dap is on it now S3flowshield isnt responding so Im just waiting.

I did reinstall the flowshield plugin and added wp super cach at the request of HG

I then sent HG a request to unlock the account to see if its fixed.

The money Im losing isnt a total loss cuz Ill extend my offering, but it still sucks.

It seems strange that the only 2 plugins I have installed are the issue according to HG, plus the fact that I have the same plugins on so many other sites with no issues.

I have 1 site with 23 1 hr videos and 600 members and no issues with the same plugins

Are they with HG? If so, that's odd, but if not... It's a clue. HG may have their servers configured in ways that aren't optimal for heavy MySQL usage, for example.

That would be where I'd start.

You've got some clues, anyway. WP caching is for a pretty specific issue. I'm surprised you had a WP-based system running under load and didn't have some sort of caching in place already.

Hopefully that solves it for you.

Seems that he has a very peaky profile, so I think a cloud-based solution is far better than a VPS or a dedicated server. No point in paying for loads of capacity that you only use 2 days a month.

I don't see why everyone has to be so grouchy with the guy! I think he could be on to something...

We had a problem with a lot of traffic coming in from Stumbleupon that I mentioned here before. It was not bandwidth that shut us down, it was CPU usage. This is a basic site running on Wordpress. Something that had never been a problem in the past. Even after that we are told our CPU usage is just fine even though our traffic is right up there still with our big stumble day.

The phone and live support escalated it I think 5 times. The server guys had no suggestions - they said, just try caching plugins. Caching plugins killed our traffic for another few days under their settings. Dreaded random white pages were showing up.

Guess what? Multiple support works told us we didn't need to upgrade the account to a VPS or dedicated at this time say it is just high CPU usage?

I think we lost at least $500 from the downtime (Almost 12 hours waiting for the "escalated support team to help/give suggestions." Now I'm worried that the site is going to get huge traffic again within the next few days as social media sites are picking up one of our posts and our traffic in Analytics live view is jumping every hour. The Cache has been disabled and we have no solution to the problem right now, but we've been told for the amount of traffic we are currently serving that our CPU usage is low. Just wait until the next surge and we will no doubt be shut down again for CPU usage! This is frustrating.

I just mean hear the guy out. I pay hostgator because of what I thought their customer support was like. In reality if you have an actual problem they just shut you down and make you wait hours for a response.

I had 2 of my sites suspended several times because of overusing shared resources on a reseller account. Hostgator were great, really helpful. I used supercache, then W3 total cache on their advice but still had problems. Somebody from support even went in and checked the W3 total cache settings for me. After a while I upgraded to VPS and Hostgator did most of the work for me. No problems over a year later.

I really think that it would be best for you to upgrade. Not doing so is obviously bad for your business.

Thing is ... I've been on this forum for a few years and every now and then you get a thread like this with the op complaining about their hosts - not just suspending but taking their sites down permamently. Hostgator normally work with you, they don't usually take sites down permamently as some other hosts do.

I have a reseller account with a company out of Montreal. They have LiteSpeed which makes WordPress run very fast, but I was looking at my resource usage last night and noticed that the CPU usage was high for about 1 hour in the evening -traffic spike, I think.

Now, I'm even thinking that since my blog is 6 years old, there's a lot of database queries, so I went in and did some maintenance. I optimized my database tables and removed all post revisions from the database, I removed a couple of unnecessary plugins, and re-installed a caching plugin.

But I've got a feeling I'm going to have to upgrade very soon to at least a VPS.

These types of things happen with WordPress. WordPress is resource heavy, and Warriors using WordPress for big launches shouldn't be on ordinary shared hosting plan, in my opinion. Because what happened to the OP can and will happen again to someone else.

Nobody gave him a hard time about starting the thread or because of the problem itself. He let his frustration boil over and started lashing out at the members trying to help him.

Paul was patient and the OP calmed down finally, and it looks like the issue is resolved - so no real harm done that we can't accept and move past.

From my own perspective, I don't much care for these types of threads simply because the OP typically places all responsibility for the problem on the provider, refusing to accept that they may be at fault, no matter how unintentional.

In this case, Hostgator has no control over what you place on the hosted account in terms of scripts or what kind of traffic you might draw. Their only choice is to suspend an account that places too high a CPU load, to protect the other accounts. This is especially true when a script is mis-configured or just doesn't work properly.

In both your cases, your claimed losses for a day clearly indicate you should both be on your own dedicated servers. A basic dedicated package there costs around $175 per month - it's managed and you won't ever be suspended when something like this occurs.

You will still have to deal with the problem, but at least your business isn't interrupted.

I was told by DAP that super-cache cannot be used with a DAP install because you cant cache login pages and sql calls?? I disabled it completely. Right now Im up and Im going to pull the trigger on a Dedicated or VPS I just cant decide which. I have 20 websites and 5 of them make me a killing so I can afford to upgrade but it would be cool to isolate this problem so that I know exactly what it is. Getting a dedicated solve the problem but only in a round about way. I may still have sluggish issues in the future on my own dedicated :-(

First of all let me say that I become more and more intrigued by Paul Meyers every time I see him handle a volatile thread. I know of several awesome warriors that are still with us on this forum, simply because at one point in time on this forum, Paul afforded them some leeway. I know that's the only reason I'm still here. - But Kudos to you Paul, you're like a magician the way you harness these volcano threads.

Now that I've exposed my man-crush, let me say that I've run into cpu problems with Hostgator before. I wasn't using the plugins you're referring to, but I was having some WP plugin compatibility issues. It was during the World-Cup, and I was selling 3 products per second. I literally went from $60,000 up to $40,000 in the red in less than an hour, because my website was stalling. I had to shut down every process, and disable each plugin one at a time until I Isolated the problem. What a nightmare, I fully understand the frustration.

WOW that'll put some grey hair on your head won't it! That's a lot of money to lose in 1 hr. Id like to see your business model :-) Did you end up getting a dedicated or anything like that?

That is the point where I ended up with a dedicated Hostgator server. I was on a Hostgator VPS - but like you, my bandwidth was not close to being maxed out. It was bad processes maxing out the CPU.

And my business model for that project was not very well planned out. It almost cost me my house. I simply found a product that I knew would sell with the popularity of the Worldcup, built a website around it, and then threw as much money at Google adwords as they would allow. If not for that glitch, my trend line shows that I would have made over $250,000 - but in the end I was lucky enough to break even and make a small profit. I still kick myself every-time I think about it.

You are still sharing server resources with others even if you have a VPS so upgrading to a VPS may not be the right solution. Yes, a VPS is far less restrictive but if you have a CPU surge Hostgator will shut you down. It would be much better, if necessary, to get a dedicated server.

Boy, you guy's were kinda mean to the fella that started this thread. Why so much so much animosity towards a person that is obviously seeking counsel from more experienced users?

300 Subscribers and 4 Videos that is hosted on AMAZON CDN for his site is hardly a reason to justify needing a VPS Server guys I hate to say it but you are all wrong on that one!

Usually when you have high CPU throttling on a server such as what this gentleman was experiencing it is usually directly attributed to Malware, Spammers that have hijacked your site or programs like W3TC that just don't seem to pan out well on Host Gator Shared. Hence there recommendation for using WP Super Cache.

Also if I might ad, not being able to use a CACHE Plugin with DAP or any other membership site is a completely absurd statement!

Grant it that in order to use a Cache Plugin with a Membership site you will have to specify what pages, post, etc get CACHED and which DO Not Get CACHED but you can indeed use a Cache plugin on any scenario pretty much if not then there would be NO Market in existence to make money developing such Plugins as the majority of people that have an internet website are on SHARED HOSTING and cannot afford VPS or Dedicated!

Just some food for though for those that were unwilling to be civilized to the man that started this thread . I think it's important that we all remember that manners and politeness towards others cost Nothing!

Either does rudeness. And there are a great many people who might view walking into a conversation as a stranger and stirring a pot that was settled a month ago to fall into that category.

        Something to consider.
