Anyone making money with Squidoo

I was just wondering if you can still rank Squidoo lenses? Did the Panda update screw them like the article directories, or can you still make money with them.

I was thinking about giving them a try if you can still rank them, so I would be interested in anything you can share with me on this subject. I know all the downside of not owning the property and it is best to have your own web site. But I am severly short of cash so buying domains is not easy right now. And I am not having much luck ranking most of my web pages other than one in the mortgage nich where I have a few pages on page one of Google and Bing. But none of the other sites are anywhere to be seen.

I am using it for traffic generation. And, yes, it is still working. I havenĀ“t touched the lenses in months, they are still on first page for my keywords.

There are many other places where you can get free subdomains, Tim, and not have all the problems caused to so many people by Squidoo's ever-changeable terms of service and their often inconsistent interpretations of them.

From the perspective of the safety and security of your business, it isn't whether the url's are free that matters: it's what the terms of service are like.

As explained in so many threads here, Squidoo is high on the danger-list (along with Blogger/Blogspot, Wordpress.com and HubPages), in this regard.

The important point is that Squidoo doesn't actually offer anything that you can't get free at places like Weebly, Yola, Blinkweb, 000WebHost and Byethost (to name but a few) and if you use those places instead, you own and control the site yourself.

From our perspective, by comparison with those other (free) places, Squidoo is "a wing and a prayer", not a "business".

These little threads might also help you, Tim ... (there's really a lot of information here) ...

In short, don't let not wanting to buy domain-names right now put you in a position where you don't own or control your own site, because there's no need to, and nothing gained from it, compared with other, better, safer places where you can do exactly the same, and get exactly the same benefits.

I have a Lens that's a page rank 3, both Squidoo and hubpages have dofollow outbound links unlike facebook or Twitter where the links are nofollow.

Agree with you Joseph. Apart from PR and backlinks benefit I've seen that if maintained properly with good content Squidoo lens got the tendency to rank in google first page thus bringing traffic as well. Thus squidoo is a must along with other blogs like wordpress, blogger and hubpages etc. Just make sure you are putting unique content at each one of them

I was promoting a clickbank product that I was banking on with a Squidoo Lense and it got removed after they determined the main motive of the site was to " Promote an Affiliate product" I say head over to hubpages they have a higher page rank and they are more tolerant

I haven't made any money with Squidoo but they are great for targeting your keywords via anchor text and getting quality backlinks and traffic.

Squidoo lenses still do very well. Anytime I'm looking for information on Google, I'll often find a Squidoo lens near the top of page one. But they do seem to be very strict about what you can do, what you can write about, what you can link to, etc. They seem like "shaky ground" to me, and I don't even think I'd try to promote an affiliate product there.

I think there are three main advantages that Squidoo has over many of the sites mentioned here:

    1) Google loves squidoo. Honestly. I can make lenses that get traffic from google in 3 to 4 hours. I can make lenses that get LOTS of traffic from Google within 24 hours.

    2) Squidoo has a very active community that will come check out your lens immediately and help get Google interested. This community will also give you lots of free advice and help.

    3) Squidoo lenses look GREAT right out of the gate with very little knowledge needed. They are designed to sell and they sell well.

I'm making money at Squidoo and I have a large group of friends who are making a lot of money too.

How do you know you're getting traffic to your squidoo lens from google? Is there a way to track traffic?

What is the policy on affiliate links? My 5minutes of research shows a lot of people saying you can and a bunch saying you can't?

You can check your stats on each lens to see where traffic comes from. The stats are built in to the dashboard within squidoo.

Affiliate links are perfectly wonderful. There are certain topics squidoo doesn't like (high spam topics) and they don't like a lens that doesn't have much on it except for affiliate links, but they love affiliate links for physical products.

As I recall, I never made a penny on that website I have popular pages, but I guess people don't like to click on ads

However, I am still using them for traffic, as it is a good way to gain publicity and more traffic

Didn't know that about the stats, interesting thx.

    Couple more questions

About how many daily visitors does a lens need to be in the top 10k? Is rank based on organic search traffic or other factors?

Does the number of lens that get paid increase monthly as more lenses are created?

What does "click outs" mean in the stats?

A lens that is within the top 2000 lenses is considered top tier and these days makes $35 to $50 a month in monthly tier payments.

I have a lens that is just barely in top tier and gets about 200 visitors a day, most from google. I have a lens that is rank 243 and gets 400+ visitors a day.

Second tier is rank 2001 to 10,000 and these lenses can get about $10 per month in tier payments. my lenses in tier two get about 15 to 50 visitors a day.

The tiers do not change and have not ever changed it seems. they may someday, who knows.

In my experience, sales lenses do great in squidoo, and when you create a lens for sales and it makes sales, you don't really care about tier payments. they are like icing.

The lensrank is not only dependent on traffic, it is also dependent on clickouts - and basically this means how many people click on one of the links on your lens.

Squidoo still does work. You just have to redirect all of your relevant content/articles to your squidoo lenses. But if you can buy your own website and drive people there, i believe the income potential will be greater.

If you're on a tight budget look at Weebly. Weebly sites tend to get a little boost in rankings just like Squidoo lenses. The big plus side, though, is that you can put whatever you want on your Weebly site & not have to worry about getting booted for promoting affiliate products. (Which Squidoo can be pretty strict about.)

When I'm looking at low competition keywords I'll occasionally throw together a site on Weebly and send some backlinks to it. If it ranks pretty easily I know it's worth the time, money, and effort to purchase a domain, create a site, and run through a full backlinking campaign.

Google still loves Squidoo, can't think why with some of the outdated crap they have them on top spot for.
However as was pointed out by Alexa they are apt to move the goalposts a little too often, you are probably better off with Weebly or Blogger.

Better to get your own site though just as soon as you can raise some cash.

I definitely feel promoting your own website is best.

However, I find Squidoo is easy to make extra cash with and get backlinks at the same time. The key is low competition, laser focused product lenses.

But you dont want to spend hours on backlinking them. So pick the "low hanging fruit".

Just be sure to read the list of Squiddonts so you dont waste time making lenses on topics they won't publish.

Right now Google loves Squidoo and lenses are pretty easy to rank if you did your keyword research right.

I'm not questioning the people who say that they are making money off Squidoo, but in the areas I search on Google (and I search in many different areas), I can't remember the last time I saw a lens in my SERPs. I can't say that they used to be numerous, but they did appear regularly in the past.

I am happy that it works for some people, but I think that it must be surviving better in some areas than in others.
