Use An Opt In Page For What Now?

Recently I saw a suggestion to use your affiliate sites to direct traffic to an opt in page to build a list as well as make affiliate sales. I'm having some trouble grasping this. Do you have them opt in so they can see your offer? is it a method anyone out there uses?

From what I've heard, the technique is to create a landing page that presells the affiliate product, but offers the solution to the problem in exchange for joining the list. I imagine it goes something like this:
Do you have widget problem X? I suffered silently for many years with widget problem X myself until I found something that actually works. If you've been suffering silently yourself, I have some fabulous news for you, there is a solution. There actually is relief for widget problem X. If you take a moment to fill in your email in the box below, you too can be on your way to relief from widget problem X.

    Email:[________]
Click this button now --->[Get Relief Now]

Then they are either taken directly to the sales page or the payment page depending on the squeeze page you created. Alternately, the first message in the autoresponder series would have the link to the affiliate product sales page or payment page.

I've never set up such a page, but that's what I've been led to believe is how it works.
    I hope this helps.

Thanks Jim that does make sense. However it sounds dodgy to me. Offering someone a solution in exchange for their email. Then leading them to a salespage. I don't think I'd go for that myself. As in trust the person whose list I joined.

Offer them something of value for the optin. Don't be shady about it. In the privacy policy, explain what you're going to do with the email and what you will send them.

Opt in pages are to build a email list. This email can be used to promote blog posts, or promote products that you recommend.

On your website there should be the following:
    Terms of Use
    Privacy Policy
    DMCA policy

Once they opt in and click the email confirmation link, you should send them to a thank you page to download the free gift.

On the thank you page, you can have the download link at the top and also promote a paid product at the bottom. Make sure the product that you are promoting is closely related to you free gift.

You can also let them download you free gift without promoting anything to build trust, it is up to you.

After that, you can send them valuable information, build relationship and make sales offer from time to time.

    Hope this helps!

I was just trying to give you a feel for how it works. You can go into deep explanation of what you're offering, and what they can expect if they opt-in. As KevinW said, don't be shady about it. It is basically the same principle as offering a free report that offers some insight into a solution, but doesn't go into complete detail and later offering a more in depth solution for more money (think upsells and cross sells). It's not shady to help someone find a solution even if it is a partial one. As the old theater saying goes, "Always leave them wanting more."

With all that being said there are better ways to build a list these days IMO ...
They all involve getting contact information so I suppose nothing new really.. but if you only rely on that as a source for list building you're missing out because a lot of people are annoyed by those tactics and are sick of being added to marketing lists.

It's better to create a situation or funnel where you build up to getting contact information period ... in a dating metaphor .. it's like going in for the kiss before asking them out on a date... IMO..

Instead you should make yourself and your site / product memorable and plug it WHILE you're giving them value and point your results to the product / site / service etc.. never ask for anything.. instead let them search for it, don't make it obvious either.. give value 2-3 times then directly ask for their info and tell them you're constantly researching valuable solutions and products/information and if they'd like to know what you're up to, to join your list ... You'll have weeded out people who truly aren't interested in you by then, and have built a solid list of people interested in you and what you have to offer.

    Cybria,

    How are you?

Allow me to shed some light on things. Whatever niche your in, find the most asked questions people have about that particular market. People that are interested have a ton of unanswered questions and objections.

Answer each one of those questions and objections in a format of your choice (Special reports, Videos, etc) then setup a squeeze page and offer them these detailed answers for free in exchange for their email address.

Of course you can break these questions into groups or segments and create multiple reports etc. Then you'll have content to send your list on a timely basis like once or twice a week.

Within these solutions are opportunities for you to mention your products and services to make things easier for your subscribers.

I hope this sheds some light on things...

probably a better idea would be to get the reader to opt in to a free email course or something and then hit them up for the affiliate sale once they've started to trust you.

You lead them to your squeeze page, offer them something for free, collect their email address, email them every 3 days via an autoresponder with free tips, and then insert your affiliate link in all of your emails. This is the general gist of it all.
