If you are forwarding a non hosted domain with masking, read this.

I had my website analyzed for SEO and one of the errors pointed out to me was that I was missing a 301 redirect. After a lot of thrashing around and some good help from fellow warriors I got it resolved, so I want to give back to the forum by alerting other warriors to an issue they may not know they have.

If you are forwarding a non hosted domain with masking, to another domain, you are probably not using a 301 redirect. Not having this 301 redirect can cause problems with the search engines giving you credit for hits on the domain being redirected, and can also cause google to think you are posting duplicate content. I defer to others on this forum to say if my understanding of this issue is correct. The bottom line is you want the 301 redirect.

In my case I had to give up the masking of the domain in order to get the 301 redirect on the forwarded domain. I consider it worth it.

In the case of godaddy and namecheap I was able to do the 301 redirect, you may have a different experience.

So once again, if you are forwarding a domain and it is not hosted and you are masking it, you may have an issue you are not aware of. You may want to look into your possibly having a missing 301 redirect and taking steps to remedy this.

Once again, my only purpose it to alert those like myself who were not aware of the issue. Most fellow warriors are probably way ahead of me on this.

Thanks and good luck,
Ed

So what exactly did you have to do...did you just sign up for a hosting plan with GoDaddy or Namecheap? I use Namecheap as my registrar, but I forward my domain too...I knew this was an issue with the 301 redirect, but I don't know how one goes about fixing it exactly.

Thanks in advance, appreciate the heads up.

No, you don't need a hosting plan, you can use your unhosted domain as it is. All you have to do is go into your domain manager and under forwarding check that says it is permanent forwarding. It is really simple once you know you need to do it. I am not a techie, so it was easy just to call godaddy or namecheap tech support and ask them how to do it, you will do it in 60 seconds or less once you know where to go. OK, thanks and good luck, Ed.
