What the @#$% are You People Doing???

I've not been an active member of the WF for very long (just barely longer than I've been in IM at all). I got started in Jan 2011 because I had a friend who'd made a very good full-time income for 6-7 years online. During that same time, I had a "real world" business, and we often compared figures and tried to compete with each other for the fun of it.

Well, my business went under, so I started talking to him and I got interested in this whole IM thing. He showed me a few things, including the Warrior Forum, and I began to study and learn how this online business actually works. I studied things like The Keyword Academy (fantastic, slow-paced course that I still think the world of), some of Sean Donahoe's methods (which I completely disagree with, look through my older posts to see why), and some other methods from a private mentor that I stumbled across and became good friends with.

Well, I've been out of the game for the last 6 months, and I decided last week to get started again. Guess what I did? I didn't run to the WF to spend hours reading the latest and greatest tips. I didn't surf through TKA or Pat Flynn (awesome guy btw) or Niche Pursuits (another great read that I enjoy when I have free time).

I did about 20 minutes worth of keyword research, picked out 5 easy-to-rank kws, wrote 5 articles, built a site, silo'ed it, and then started backlinking. I managed to pick-up an EMD and I rolled. All-in-all, I spent 5 hours on the entire thing (up until I started backlinking). I subscribed to Paul's backlinks and got the March 50-pack, and I'm sticking up 5 of his backlinks a day for 10 days since my site's a new site. I'm also doing my own searches for EDUs and GOVs.

This brings me to my post here. I came strolling through here today because I enjoy helping people out. I like commenting on new threads where I think the person is genuinely asking a question, and I really love seeing when people hit the little thank you button under my posts. (I get a warm feeling inside.)

Instead, though, I see post after post after post of people who are stuck in Information Stagnation (my word). They just want to find the cheapest this or the best way to do that, and they're failing to see one thing. It's the biggest secret I've ever seen in any business, let alone the IM business:

The secret is work.

Quit reading. Don't click the links in my signature. Don't read any other threads. Take whatever you have already learned, get into the Google Keyword Tool, do some research, and buy a domain. Install WordPress. Write some articles. DO IT ALL YOURSELF THE FIRST TIME. You will never know if you are getting a good return on your money if you don't know what to expect, so quit trying to pay people to do something you don't want to do and JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

And if you're really deadset on giving away any possible profits before you've even made them, send me a private message and I'll give you my PayPal address and you can just give me your money.

  • You nailed it.

It's always been about getting our a**** off and getting our hands dirty. I have no idea why people get into this mindset of instant riches? All of a sudden, for most people, online businesses appear to be different compared to the Job/offline businesses ( maybe because it's just the Internet and computers?).

You are right about getting right down to action. Success has a thing for action-takers, you know?

Great to read your post, first thing in the morning. Made my day.

It is simple when in online business. Take action = see results.

Too many times people just think you can build it and they will come. But it does take a big blood sweat and tears to see some results. Then once you test things out, work out what technique worked the best and just do more of that.

But I agree without taking action first, what sort of results do you have to work with or test against. That is key...getting off your fat / or skinny arse and doing some old fashion work.

Couldn't agree more. You can have all the information about anything but none of that would be worth a damn if you didn't actually put what you knew into use. Set a plan for yourself, get and stay motivated about it, and TAKE ACTION. Then you'll be able to see for yourself how to create your success. Even if you don't accomplish what you thought you would, at least you'll know exactly what not to do next time which means you'll be that much closer to your goal anyway. Get up and DO WORK!! The secret that the "gurus" wont tell you in their $47 ebook. Anyhow, awesome post.

        Hard work equals success.

Schedule your day tomorrow by spending at least 3 hours prospecting first thing, followed with current customer service and product delivery.

Read your email only at a couple of set times during the day. Once you've made some money, drop by at night and share your success.

        Focus. Focus. Focus.

I don't think that hard work necessarily EQUATES to success, however, it does increase your chances/odds of finding success tremendously. Hard work without passion, vision, and a hint of knowledge, is void. In my early days of IM, I recall working hard. I worked VERY hard. It wasn't until I found a delicate balance between taking action with investing in my business, and investing in myself, through the pursuit of knowledge (learning new techniques, etc), that things really started to take off for me.

I agree with x3xsolxdierx3x - that old saying comes to mind "work smarter, not harder".

I worked really hard when I first started too, and still do most of the time but, I'm learning to work smarter as well and that's making a big difference. However, that's also after years of being in IM. It amazes me how some folks can be brand new and make a fortune within months. Taking action is, of course, the obvious thing one must do.

Defining goals is a great motivator too. For example, say you want a list of 10,000 by the end of the year. Stay focused on that goal, do research (which may include buying products) that will help you accomplish your goal (and helps avoid the shiny object/WSO buying syndrome) and set short, medium, long term goals and be accountable for meeting your deadlines, etc.

I know that's a very simplified answer but that was more or less my epiphany about a year ago.

Amen! Without a goal, there is no point. That'd be like going to Lowe's, buying 2 tons of wood and a bucket of nails, and then just randomly attaching one board to another. If you actually set a goal of building a house, however, your hard work has guidance and can become a truly great structure.

Thanks to everyone for their great comments. I was hesitant to write this last night, and I wasn't sure what I'd find when I woke up this morning. I'm glad to see my post was well-received. It's off to work now!

You sure know how to write an eye catching subject line!

You can read a million books and ask a million questions on how to play guitar, but if you don't actually pick one up and try some chords, you'll never learn how to play a tune. That means callouses and broken strings and frustration, but it also leads to those wonderful moments an old programming instructor of mine use to refer to as "intelectual orgasms." And eventually it leads to that sublime moment when you realize you've done it yourself...it's your hard work and your effort and no one can take that away from you.

ROFLOL!! There are times when I forget that people who don't know me can't see my lifetime's experiences just because I can.

I actually have a number of sites up, a successful WP plugin, and I'm part of a coaching system where I help others to get started in IM. Even before I decided to join the WF last year, I had spent a year just reading about IM online (again, because of my friend), but I just didn't believe it would work. Now I know better because I've made money with it.

And, in case you're wondering, I AM a natural-born salesman. I was in sales for 15 years before I got out of it after my real-world business went under.

Thomas...that is exactly why I am encouraging people to take action more quickly. Had I not wasted a year online reading, and then took off almost another entire year because I thought I'd be too busy with college, there's no telling where I would be now. And even then, you should work hard and smart.

Most people feel that they need to know everything about IM before they do anything. They are afraid of failure but it is honestly the most powerful learning tool out there. Its painful and so it burns the lessons into your mind.

One of my friends who is a scout leader told me that after every camping trip they have a Start Stop Continue meeting. They talk about what they need to start doing differently, what they need to stop doing, and what do they need to continue to do. This is the way to pursue almost anything in the real world. You can learn many things on the internet but until you start doing the lessons you learned are just abstract and no use.

I see right through your reverse psychology. You're telling me not to click the links knowing that I will because I don't like being told not to do things. But, you knew that, and thus told me not to click the links, knowing I'd know not to click the links, because you actually meant for me to click the links, which means I should click the links if you went this far out of your way to convince me not to click them by telling me not to click them, knowing I'd want to click them but knowing that you knew that and thus making me not want to click them, but now maybe I have to click them, but I'm not, because if you really wanted me to click the links, you would not have left them in your signature, meaning I'd have to go to Bing, look you up and find your sites so I could find the places whose links you did not want me to click. But, since you included the links and told me not to click them, I know that you want me to click them and I am not going to bend to your will. So there.

OK I'm gonna ratchet up the reverse psychology on you, then. I actually just posted a blog entry to my site, jarycu.com, which I told you not to click on in my signature link. It's a fascinating, long, and detailed post telling people who are brand-new to IM EXACTLY what to do to get ahead and make money fairly quickly online.

Don't go read it. Whatever you do, whoever you are, DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINKS IN MY SIGNATURE. EVER EVER EVER. Don't click on them. I'd rather you go and prepare a zombie shelter and watch The Walking Dead (my favorite show too!) than I would have you click on my link and read my new post.

When starting out we just need to go after ONE thing.

I could give you all types of references, but my motto is based in a Biblical passage:

"Faith without works is dead." James 2:26
I first heard it in church as a kid. As a late teen / early 20-something, I also heard it preached at AmWay conventions (yes, I bought the soap for a while!). As I've progressed through life, I've seen the truth of the statement.

If you read through some of my other posts, you'll see that I constantly say this to people. When people who are new to IM ask me what to do, I tell them to build their first site 100% on their own. Don't outsource anything. You need to do the WordPress, keyword research, article writing...the whole 9 yards YOURSELF.

Why do I preach this to people? So you know what you're paying for later on when you have the money to outsource something. How do you know if you are getting ripped off if you don't even know what goes into making a good product? If you don't know how to research a keyword, how do you know the difference in someone charging $5 and someone charging $150?

Get out there and do it yourself. You might enjoy it and save yourself a ton of money. If not, at least you'll know what you're paying for, and it will make the results that much more satisfying.

      The secret is work.

So when you say "What the @#$% Are You People Doing???"

You should be less concerned about that and more concerned about your own business.

People come here to learn and it's not a race - they have the right to work their own plans in whatever they choose.

Unless your keywords are really low competition - 50 profile links and a bunch of .edu links (.edu do NOT get special treatment or carry special weight btw) are not going to make much difference. You need a more robust plan.

Andy, I hope A LOT of people see that quote. A LOT of people. When I say, over and over, that the secret is work, for me it goes without saying that it has to be smart work. My definition of "work" even goes so far as to qualify it as being more than just taking aimless action.

Work must be guided. That's why the origination to my quote, "Faith without works is dead," has two parts to it. The faith guides the works even as the works create and display the faith.

In such a way, having a business plan will guide your work. It doesn't matter if it is in Internet Marketing or Construction or simply planning a wedding...if you are taking action without a plan for that action, you might as well go outside your house and dig a hole. And then fill it in and dig it again and repeat this process every day.

Thank you for making this point for me.

        great advice!

I remember when I started my first successful website, it all started with a vision, and without hope of making any money during the first year. About 10 months later, everything started increasing (traffic, registrations, adsense , leads, etc..)

What I am doing here is trying to figure out what the %^$$# I am doing wrong. I am putting in the work and not getting the results. I am hoping that somewhere in this massive jumble of information and sales pitches that I can get this figured out.

Example: I targeted a keyword which Market Sam gave an SEOT of ~11,000. Confirmed with GKT for 673,000 monthly searches. The Adsense CPC was low but with 11,000 visitors I could make something. I did the hard work. I rank #1. The site makes $1 per day. %^Y&^&**&&^^^^%%

I gotta figure something out cause right now it ain't making sense.

I work harder on this business than I ever did when I was out in the real world. I put in more hours than I ever did before but it has paid off and people see too many dollar signs in the beginning I think and expect it to come quickly without hard work being put into it. This is a business people and you have to work your butt off to get anywhere with it.

Seems like many newbies join the forum everyday in complete misunderstanding of what they need to be doing everyday to make money online. It's like riding a beam of light for 6 months, and then come back to earth 6 months later, and view the earth 5,000 years from now. I guess change is inevitable. But now that you're back on the forum (congrats by the way), maybe the changes won't surprise you as much.

Welcome back to the forum after a break. Great words of wisdom there. As great an information source as this forum is, if any newbie were to just read your post and leave Warrior Forum for 1 year and come back again, they'd be at a much different/better place than members who'll surf the forum for the next year but fail to take action.

Thank you for highlighting the basics for all of us, especially for the ones just starting out.

If you can afford to outsource you should. Even as a newbie. Leverage other people's effort to make money.

Or you can write hundreds of articles a year, set up dozens of blogs yourself if you want, but that ain't how the richest people in the world got rich. Or even the middle class ones!

I won't disagree with that. That's why I usually tell people to build their first site on their own. After that, you know what you can do and what you need help with. Chances are very good that, of the 1000+ people who have read my thread so far, there are less than 10-20 who can truly afford to outsource. The rest are trying to figure out how to be successful at something, anything in their lives, which is why they are here.

I want them to quit reading so much and take action. When I had a business, I encouraged my employees to @#$% up as much as they could. The more mistakes they mad, the more chances I had to teach them. It took a lot of pressure off of them and all of them were happy with the approach. The ones who refused to screw up, though, were never as productive as the ones who did.

Get out there and work and then come back for answers when something goes wrong.

Amen to that! I agree that people should know how to do it.

I made sure I knew every part of every aspect of every business I ever owned but then eventually hired people to do the work.

I also instruct newbies that when they are watching a training video or reading an instructional ebook or manual, to actually do the steps as you are going along.

It is much too overwhelming to just try to learn and remember everything at one time when you've never done it before.

In all honesty, I wasn't asking a question with the title of the thread; I was screaming "WHAT THE @#$% ARE YOU PEOPLE DOING???"

It was aimed at all of the people who are making one post after another about stuff that just doesn't matter.

"What WP theme is the best?" "Can I make more money with Amazon, AdSense, CJ.com, Google Ads, etc etc etc?" "Should I paint my fingernails lime green or chartreuse?"

Who cares? Just get out there and work with a purpose and you'll be successful. You'll screw up, too, but that's the FUN part of being successful.

That's a very arrogant and judgemental position to take.

Just because you feel like you've got your **** together doesn't mean you should start telling everyone else they're wasting their time.

Many people are really struggling and need encouragement rather than ridicule.

Just the opposite, my friend. I don't feel like I have it all the way together. If I did, I'd be where I want to be instead of where I am. I'd have a small army of AdSense sites generating a semi-passive income for me, and I'd have my laptop out on a beach somewhere instead of being stuck in a drab, dull office everyday like I am now.

I don't want to get into a flame war or fight with you, but I think you're taking my statements slightly out of context. This is not your fault; it's the fault of the medium we're using. I am one of the least-serious guys you could ever meet.

I have a full-time job where I counsel people about various diseases they have that may kill them soon, and I refuse to get them depressed over it. My message to them is one of hope and one of a cure as there is medicine available that can kill off the disease if they choose to take advantage of it. I make sure they understand that, and I leave them with a feeling of real hope.

That's what I want to do here as well, and I forget at times that people can't see the smile on my face while I'm typing a message. In my head, I hear the voice inflection as I type, and I hear it again when I read it back. You don't know me and have never heard my voice, so you can't hear it as well.

For anyone who reads this thread: take some hope from it. This is my call to action to you: Go out there and work, work smart, work with a purpose, and you will have success.

AdSense. I'm basically creating sniper sites, spending 2-4 weeks backlinking them, and then waiting to see if they work or not. If/when I find one that is successful, I will build it out into a full site with 100% UNIQUE CONTENT and continue to use AdSense. At that point I may also try and build a list off of it. (I haven't done that yet, so I'll figure that out when I get there.)

Obviously there's more details than that, but I think that's enough to get you going anyways.

No, he will NOT give you this information. No one in their right mind is going to post their URLs on this site for others to copy. The whole point of this thread is for you to get motivated to do your own research, planning and then take action on a particular business model.

If you want to build Adsense sites, find the information you need and begin building them like the OP. There are plenty of examples online of these types of sites so use the Google.

"Fun to Write" was exactly right...I'm not about to give out my URLs in a thread OR in a PM. People would either try to compete with me or click-bomb my sites so I'd get banned from AdSense...and neither of those would make me very happy.

Though there are such exceptions, I think it is almost an unavoidable phase in IM.

Everybody tells you to take action. An I believe everybody knows that they need
to take action. But, just reading about something, watching videos, listen to audio,
gives you the sense of security and comfort that is not easy to get out. Those who
break out of it can do something about, those who don't are in big trouble.

The good balance of learning and doing is the best. Learning something and immediately
applying it, trying it out is the best way there is.

This is a pretty good point to make as well, but I want to make an addendum to it: Stick with it for a pre-determined amount of time. If you pick a method and give it say...6 months and have no success, then it's time to try something else. Before you jump ship, though, make sure that you really gave it your all and stuck to the method.

I dislike telling people that I make a living on the computer while working from home, because many of them end up asking me to sit down with them for a few minutes to show them how I do it.

It seems that many people have been tricked into the whole fantasy that you can just sit at home, click a few buttons and then sit around and watch as the cash pours in.
