Bad Reviews and Good Reviews

Hey fellow Amazonians.

When making a site i like to have at least one product that does not cut the mustard to show the visitor some sort of balance in the reviews.

When doing so i like to recommend a top selling product at the end of the bad product review.

I usually try and use products have between a 1 star and a 2.5 star rating. Sometimes i have to go higher if there is not an acceptable bad product with a 2.5 star of less rating.

So what do you guys consider is bad enough to warrant being used as a bad product review?

    No product is perfect.

    EVERY product has a downside.

Reviews aren't always the most reliable indicator of whether a product is good or not, however, a substantial aggregation of low star comments would certainly justify your decision to feature a product as a "bad" product.

With the evolution of the internet, I do think the best way to approach this is to be as honest and forthcoming about everything. Readers can smell right through it. Be genuine and transparent, and convey the downside of even the most highly reviewed products.

i agree that we add pros and cons for each product. that isn't what i am talking about.

what i mean is have maybe 4 products with 4 star and above ratings and one product with a 1 or 2 star rating to make a total of 5 products in the review. then on the products that have the 1 or 2 star rating you put a link to one of the 4 or 5 star rated products stating that maybe the customer would be interested in that product instead.

Would you use this tactic with a product that had a 3 star average rating? I try to keep it 2.5 stars and below unless one does not exist.

Pros and cons are great for amazon reviews, in fact a negative review or score in a bunch of reviews will add perceived credibility to your good reviews.

But please do not review a product badly just for this reason, I knew someone who created a great product and his product was being negatively reviewed on an affiliate website by an affiliate who never bought it in the first place.

Giving bad reviews is would not be making stuff up about the product. You would do it the same we many of us that do not own the products do our good reviews. By quoting what others have said in their amazon reviews.

As in "many of the people that have actually purchase this product and took the time to leave a review have said yadda yadda yadda".

I would never make something up about a product.

Back to the original point...Yes, a one or two rating and there's no way I'm buying the product. I read Amazon product reviews to buy just about everything (even groceries!) so I think they're super important. I write them, too. I don't know many people who will buy a product that they knowingly has a one or two star rating. So you're gold if you can find ones that low.

          Thanks for commenting Robyna,

Less than 2.5 stars is what i was looking for also and i prefer less than 2 stars with more than 1 review but there are some products that do not have less than 2.5 stars.

Do you include items with a 2.9 star rating in your do not buy list or do you give these products a second look?

You can always be honest about a product without having to feel you have to over do the good vs bad comments anyway.

If you try and place yourself in someone else's shoes who is looking to buy a certain product anyway, I am sure by just being honest as you can will help keep the potential customer to feel comfortable with what you are reviewing.

I suppose it is all about finding the right balance at the end of the day.
