Social Networking Site - phpFox, Joomla or Drupal?

What would you recommend as the best option as a base for a social networking site - phpFox, Joomla, or Drupal?

I've narrowed my options down to these 3 scripts. They all seem to offer everything I need (plenty of addons) and they integrate easily with aMember which I need to run another aspect of the social site.

Anyone have any suggestions as to which is the best?

Any help would be appreciated .

Thanks

Rachel

    Hi Rachel

I don't really know much about phpFox, but I am a regular Joomla user, so I may be able to provide a bit of insight. Then again, I may only be telling you what you already know ... apologies if that's the case.

Both Joomla and Drupal are Content Management Systems (CMS), and both are excellent for building websites where it is incredibly easy to add all kinds of extensions for extra functionality. Both have Social Networking extensions and plug-ins.

It seems to me that phpFox is actually a tool to specifically develop Social Networking sites and it seems to have pretty good reviews from what I have seen. It allows you to almost clone something like MySpace, very easily.

So it looks like a choice between building a CMS based website with social networking functionality (Joomla / Drupal) or building a social networking site (phpFox).

If you choose the former (i.e. CMS based website with social networking capabilities), then I personally like Joomla. A friend of mine prefers Drupal, but he is very technically minded. I got the impression from him that Joomla is easy to pick up for non-techies or people who want an easy life, whilst Drupal is for the seriously competent techies (and I'm not in that category).

If you choose Joomla, check out Community Builder and JomSocial as plugins for social networking. I haven't used either, as I have not built a social networking site, but they seem to be well used and popular extensions.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Kate

P.S I found this e-zine article about phpFox - you may already know this info but it may be useful

Drupal requires much less memory and is better designed than Joomla: its architecture means that a module can be far better integrated with the rest of the site than with Joomla. Joomla has way more plugins (called modules in Drupal). It is slower and takes up much more memory.
