What salary could you live off?

Hi

What salary could you live off?

We constantly hear how people want to have millions and millions of money in the bank but in reality, what would be your ideal annual salary, what could you live off that you'd be happy and comfortable with?

Many people set up business (online businesses) to 'make money quick' but some people are happy to earn a salary that they are happy to live off. If you set up an online business what salary would you be happy to get in the real world?

Obviously we would like millions,.

    Anything I have to.

If you gave me $500 a month, I'm sure I could live off it. Would just have to sacrifice a whole lot.

I agree, it is possible to live off of any amount. It is only necessary to earn more money if your exceptions or financial responsibility (i.e. family etc.) shifts.

I could scrape by on 1k a month - that's only $250 per week and that is very achievable online. I think it's good to keep grounded in the beginning and not to chase the million dollar dream....

Start small (but of course dream Big) and give yourself little income targets along the way. $100 per week, then $200 etc. once you find your sweet spot you can ramp up those efforts and your income will take care of itself.

But don't get carried away in the beginning.

Yeah, London is god damn expensive - I would be really happy with ~$4k / month here, but if I were "just to live" with the simplest and cheapest options I would still need ~$2k.

I heard that western countries are far more expensive. Here in India, if you come with that money, you will be a millionaire because 1$ = 50 Rupees.

My target income would be 5 - 8k next month because of some extra expenses.

Been doing some research into property rental's (studio/1 beds) in decent area's in wider London recently and many studios are now going for £800-£900 ($1400-$1700) a month before you add bills or living expenses. So I'd say you'd be pushing in on even $2k round London unless you were happy to have a room in a shared house. I'd guess they'd be a lot cheaper!

And I thought a studio for 650-700 euro/month was damn expensive.

People rent whole houses here for 400 euro/month (excl g/w/elec ofcourse). Ofcourse it makes a huge difference whether you rent private or from the standard organizations. For example:

House with 3 bedrooms from gov. organization, around 400-500 euro/month
House with 3 bedrooms privately rented 1000-1500 euro/month for the exact same house.

It's a huge problem cause when you exceed a certain income level you are forced to rent private, so a 100 euro difference in salary can turn your life from a good living into a hell.

And to make things worse, when you reach that salary to be forced to rent private, you can't say I buy a house cause the average house price is 250.000 euro and your income is too low for that. So there is a huge gap for singles who make a slight above average salary here (like 1600 euro nett/month). average salary is around 1300 euro.

To make things even more worse, there are 5-10yr waiting rows to get a government rent house (government is a bit wrong word here, cause these are nowadays also private organizations, but fellow dutch men know what I mean (woningbouw vereniging).

I could survive on just $2K per month. This would cover all my outgoings each month and give me some left over for a few treats here and there. I earn more than that currently but that was my goal in the beginning to reach 2K in recurring incomes

I agree. $500 a week is a reasonable salary to live off of.
After paying bills then there should be sufficient left over to buy extra goodies

One of the reasons why 100k per year is quoted so often is because statistically that is the figure that will have the most profound change on a persons life.

You don't need millions to be comfortable. Once you have an extra $1000 or so per week coming in that opens up a whole world of freedoms for the average person. The difference between $50K per year and 100K is much greater then then the difference between 100K and 500K as far as effecting someones life goes (for obvious reasons) After that it just becomes more money.

I could "survive" on $0 per month for 12 months before I am in real trouble, I would then need $3K per month to survive.

But comfortable living would be $4K to $5K per month.

I have been consistently earning over double that, which has put me in a position to survive a year without pay.

It's what you need to do in order to survive in this unpredictable world.

    thank you for your comments

Not necessarily the amount you would need every month/year to survive off but how much you would like to have to be comfortable, still do your hobbies, work, socialise etc.

I would be happy with 1,500-2,000 a month if I was solely doing my online business and just live off that. So the yearly amount id be happy to live off would be about 25,000

At the minute im doing both with working day job which i enjoy and also websites and saving alot but if I was to stop juggling a few things and just have the one income from one of my business i would settle for around/just 25,000

I've still not really left the student lifestyle and before I was in IM I was making around 400/month with my part time job.

It really helps to have a budget.

For example, I know every penny I spend.

I set aside money each month for predictable major expenses -- like property taxes and insurance -- and when the bills come in the money is sitting there.

I also set aside $1800 a month for investments into my websites --programming expenses, outsourced article writing, WSOs or whatever else I feel like buying -- so I don't have to worry if I want to buy something.

The rest goes into savings so I won't have to eat dog food when I'm older.

Since my kids are out of the house we don't need nearly as much money. But still I like to have about $35,000 a month to live on.

Sorry, but is $35,000 a typo? Is that in USD or something else. Not sure I know anyone who NEEDS a min of $35,000 to live on per month. You must have some pretty high expenses.

          Jeff,

No, that's not a typo. It is $35,000 in US dollars. But the dollar doesn't go as far as it used to.

I pay about $12,000 per month in income tax, so that only leaves $23,000. The last time I went to a movie a small popcorn was $5.60. So it adds up.

I would love to say I could comfortably live off a salary of $5k or less but living here in San Diego that just doesn’t seem possible. At this present time my monthly expenses are $19k and doesn’t account for business costs because I always keep that separate. I’ve actually even put everything down on paper to see what expenses could be cut, but I was only able to really save $1,600 per month

It'll depend on where you live in India. In cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai (!), etc, a decent 3B home can be $500/month, easily (talking about a decent location). In a second-tier city in India, for a single person, $500 would easily be more than comfortable.

            --

I can easily live off of $200-250 a month however, that would be after taking away my rent and all the other monthly expenses that I have currently.

That's far from the current reality though. With my rent and every other small and big monthly expense, anything less than $1500~ wouldn't cut it.

I can live off of just about any salary. I'm very low maintenance though.

I lived for about 3 years on $250/mo to $350/mo in the Philippines. That's including visa costs which were about $50/mo after everything was accounted for. Always made more than that, but that was all I personally spent.

At about $500/mo there it would become very comfortable for one person. You could rent a place on the beach, spend your days snorkling or napping in a hammock, and maybe even hire a maid/cook at that income level.

  • In 2003 I was getting by with less than $1,000 a month sometimes.

These days I feel lucky to know that I earn a very good living (I won't go into specifics...no need.)

But here's the pitfall: no matter how much you make, there's always something ELSE you'll want and worse...feel that you NEED.

This is why you see people that earn half a mill a year filing for bankruptcy because they overextended themselves.

And why you see families of 6 living comfortably (and happily) in a small house on a salary of >$30k/yr.

A lot of people in this thread are on their way to making a lot of money. If I could impart one small word of wisdom is this: no matter how much you have now, live below your means. Even if only slightly.

We could probably get by on $2,000 monthly or $24,000 annually provided we were debt free (which will be soon) with our current family size. Ideally, though, we should be comfortable at around $4k monthly, and that's for a family of soon-to-be five.

Dude, your question ("How much could you live off") suggests to me that you have some pretty major limiting beliefs about yourself and your business.

Personally, I don't want to make enough money to "live."

I've got enough cash in the bank to "live" for the next 20 years. Who cares? I still wake up every day and kick ass to make more...because I love what I do.

If you think in terms of "how much salary do I need to live off," it's OK if you are stuck in a job you hate and you want to do IM full time. But if you're already doing IM full time and are thinking in terms of "how much do I need to live off," you need to re-adjust your mindset and start thinking in terms of, "What does my conversion rate need to be if I'm going to buy that mansion in Brazil within two years?"

Yes money to 'live' off to enjoy things, still have an income from your business and enjoy going out and holidays and living your life comfortably, stable, in a way care free and having your house and supporting your family etc. Realistic income you would like to do these things.

Right.. Bills and expenses alone put me over 3k monthly, plus another 1k minimum I invest into my ventures. To be honest I think 10k a month is a comfortable number, it all depends on how you live. I like to drive nice sports cars and watch boxing matches on huge mounted televisions... bad habits I know, but I was once told it was my right as an American spend money how I choose to..

Depends on where you live. I think 10k per month is enough ANYWHERE in the world, but in places like Central Europe even 2-3k is enough, and at places like India and China even 500$ per month is considered VERY high. But again, the expectations and the "quality of life" is different. Also, if you plan to travel a lot and take part in all sort of exciting adventures like I do, an extra 5$ per month never hurts! But to just cover the essential expenses, I think 2-3k could do it.

thankfully, I have a job with great benefits so the salary is almost an afterthought, I COULD scrape by on $400 - 500 a week (but I don't know how anyone could really save making that??)

my sideline goal (some months yes, some months no) is to earn as much as a person would earn on minimum wage working full time.

I refer to this as "Uncle Jake's money" after a departed relative who always had a little cash income from something (selling cattle, repairing sewing machines later, etc).

I hate to be a contrarian. We are talking minimalist here. I don't know about you, but I wish to expand my income. So the question of what is the minimum I could live on is irrelevant.

What income am I seeking? I would like to live comfortably on 1/3 of what I earn. I want to give 1/3 away; charities + help my daughters raise their kids. I would like to invest 1/3. I can live comfortably on $5000/month after taxes. So, that means that I should earn about 20,000/month.

I am making strides to make that happen.

Keep thinking MORE! Good luck in your quest to earn money online.

I can honestly live on whatever I'm given. Once I was at a low income of $12,000 a year (after being $62,800 a year) and made it work. The point is if you put your mind to it (give up stuff) you can live on just about any income level. Now I live comfortably on $6k a month and bank any company profits above/beyond. Just realize what you want in life, what that'll require... and go after it.

And you said that all of us are dreaming of the millions; I ain't actually. I'm dreaming about earning 3,000 euros a month from an internet business('s). Unfortunately I need quite a bit with student loans a new baby and being a single income household (for now). I also live in an expensive region where homes cost $450K (for a townhome). Yes, I could move, but we like it here. Once the loans are repaid (4 years remaining), our income requirements will be cut down considerably.

So far I generate more each month than I need to live on which is my goal. I hope to widen the gap more each month.

Debt is a killer and I can't wait to get rid of it. I have sufficient cash to pay it off, but I prefer having a cushion to get by in a pinch.

Avoid debt as much as you can. Student loans are often necessary for an education, but they are chain for years post-school. I don't regret them, but they hurt.

For me - not much at all. Currently, I have a decent salary from my day job, but because I don't spend money really (I'm an accountant by trade so my wallet by default is closed all the time), I don't have a mortgage, I have no kids, I have no debt, my wife makes a really good salary (and she buys her own stuff) - most of what I make is dispensable income and some bills I have are discretionary (cell bill with data plan, aweber account, etc.) .

So... the bare minimum for me would be ~$1,200/ month (pay half the rent, some bills, and have some spending cash).

But no one wants to settle for the bare minimum!

Now to really live and considering that big project that's been turning in my head for a couple of years which involves a lot of traveling... $2000 would probably be a minimum.

That would give me enough to where I wouldn't have to stress about bills, and still had money to have fun with. However, I wouldn't get to live in my dream home, drive my dream cars, etc. For this reason I would never limit myself on my earnings, and why would you want to?

      My Wage...
I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
      However I begged at evening
      When I counted my scanty store;
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
      I worked for a menial's hire,
      Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
      Life would have paid.

What I can survive on per month? It would be $2,000 a month to live decently. Nothing exciting, a treat for myself or pets every month but nothing major. And I sure couldn't save a whole lot with that.

What I would like to cover hobbies and interests? WAY more than that. Not because I want to take lavish vacations or drive a Mercedes, (although...would be nice), but because I want to buy a lot of land and open up an animal sanctuary. Even though it would be non profit, it still requires a whole lot of money. But that's what I would love to do more than anything else in this world.

You get more, you want more, you spend more, thats about how a person is living.
We can live at no salary at all :- )
The problem is that nothing is never enough. We always want more.
The more we get - the higher get the standards and the " minimum" for living changes.
By the way London is a not a good place to make an example of , in terms of living.
It very expensive to live there, and you get small apartments, thats the standard.
I can assure you that , as i have traveled a lot, and had to live for a long time in different places, where i had to have apartments for over a month.
You should try Countries like Netherlands, Sweden, Australia.

I used to work in a dead-end job... slogging from 8+ in the morning to 9+ at night.
To everyone else, I had it made - I was a college graduate, working in a respectable multinational corporation and earning a fairly decent salary.
Yet, somehow I wasn't happy at all!
Perhaps it was the long working hours... Perhaps it was the unavoidable office politics. Whatever the case, I soon found myself dreading going to work every day and I hated it. soon i started raking big everyday from immense power of online marketing and soon become my own boss, Basically, i learned Law of Attraction which means is everything we attract into our lives is due to our thoughts and that "Like attracts Like".
What this means is that if we keep thinking a certain thought (positive/negative) over and over again with strong emotion, we manifest what we think about into reality.
In other words, we attract what we focus on.
So if we focus on lack, we attract it. If we focus on abundance, we attract that.
Thoughts lead to feelings which lead to actions which in turn lead to results.
If we want to change the results we get in our lives, we need to start by changing our thoughts.

I need about $250,000 per year to live comfortably.

    - Mortgage payment
    - Money towards retirement
    - Money towards 3 vacations a year
    - Money towards weekend entertainment
    - 3 kids - saving for their college
    - etc. etc. etc.

This puts me in a position where I can buy things without thinking much about it and still save a great deal towards vacations, college for the kids and an early retirement.

Now realistically - I can "survive" on probably $80K a year (move to a less affluent part of the country, downsize a good bit, vacation and travel less, eat in more often, stop buying expensive things, work till I'm older, tell my kids to suck on it and pay their own way through college etc.).

But - there is a huge difference between "surviving" and "living".

Money may not buy you happiness but it can enable it.

Sure, this is the key thing here: are we working just to "survive" or to have a "comfortable living"? I guess we could all survive with $1,000 a month but... what's the point in working your butt off just to drag yourself on for one more day?

In my country I can live lavishly with $2000 a month. Hit $5000 and you can live very very lavishly. . I knew a girlfriend whose father makes $8K a month and has a house like a mini castle, with lifestyle like Paris Hilton.

Average salary in here is between $150 - $300. Above $300, it means you're doing well in your job. For the moment, I'm living as a student and only need $70/month to survive, but that's not included tuition fee, research cost, and dorm rent bills. So far my IM earnings can cover all these cost, but leave me a few to scale up. A student becoming financially independent from parents can be a challenge

Paying off students loans, paying for children's health/dental bills because of lack of employed coverage, paying for a house and multiple vehicles so me and my wife and get around, investing money into soon-to-be-failed IM campaigns trying to find a winner, eating good meals every day, going on vacations across the country, going out on the town once a week.. Just to name a few.

Well I have a friend in California who banks way more than that, and I guess the 100k watches are only "entry-level", so it just depends on how much money you want to make in your life.

Please note, I am not saying I would spend 100k on a watch, that is to much for me. But if you see the comments on all of the expensive watch threads on Amazon, they are hilarious!

1000 a month is rent and food, but would mean no fun and no school. No cell phone or any nice perks. I would hate it, but i could live!

It actually makes me feel bad that that's the lowest I could live off of in Canada compared to other countries.

I could live on $800 a month here in Lima, Peru (although maybe that would change in the near future since inflation is here now due to the middle class growing fast).

At the moment, I live VERY well here on about $3,000 a month.

Of course $6,000 would be even better !

Amazing how this has turned into the "LOOK HOW MUCH I EARN" thread...it was a valid question from the OP.

Some of the Americans supposedly earning upwards of $6000 dollars per month yet still worrying about petrol (gas?) prices?? You have the cheapest petrol in the Western world, about a quarter of the price in the UK...10 gallons in the UK today is about £60.

I'd have to rake in about $3000 after taxes per month to live comfortably. I could get by on about $2000 after taxes.

I could comfortably live on $25k, but I would like $50k. <- With a family.

Anything above this I would be just straight investing/donating.

My g/f and I have been living off £350/month between us in the past. Here in Budapest, that is. Now, before expenses, we would need around $750 to live OK and $1000 to live pretty well for us.

That's between us, though, and it's damn low I love that we can eat off of less than $5 for both of us for a day. And eat well! Roast chicken, risotto, cordon-bleu. Budapest can be damn cheap if you know where to look

Looking to hit $1200 myself this month, for the first time since I've gone online
