Will buying an old domain with no backlinks at all be better than having a 5 month old site with some links? I'm trying to get listed in the DMOZ which I hear from some people impossible. Can someone tell me how I can get listed in the DMOZ? If there is no way what are some alternatives?
Thanks

I believe Google weighs the age of search index entries perhaps more than the domain registration date alone, I hae heard some gurus suggest being under 6 months old is the worst age factor.
DMOZ may not pay too much attention to the age factor, employing primarily a human review process. Some advise you select a category that shows some indications of being maintained, some apparently are hopelessly backlogged with no assigned editor, supposedly a customized version of the little mascot character in the section is one good sign, there is some reported corruption, if you receive solicitations of some sort that indirectly relate to the category you signed up for, it may be a bribe request.

      Yes,
      I believe you are right.
in my experience, the toughest time for achieving good SEO movement is in the sites first 6-12 months. An older domain helps dramatically in our experience.

Google looks at a lot of factors including age of the domain, the quality of sites linking to you, is your site organized to provide the best quality user experience and so forth.

in my experience old domains ranked better than new ones but that doesn't mean that the age was a factor, alot of people ranked their aged domains, I tested 2 sites that I built and each one of them is 8+ years , they ranked within the first month...

I also checked the domains at the top results the for some keywords and they were less than 6 months.. I personally like aged domains but its just me..

Just bribe a crooked dmoz editor with money. That's how most people get in.

      @Sbucciarel,

That's a wrong and a very bad advice.
I am also a Dmoz editor.

There are very strong consequences for that, if you are caught your site will be banned for ever and never be listed.

There are millions of categories, new editors higher level editors, meta editors and admins, who keep a check on all the editors. I personally log in to the editor dashboard and make sure i review all the sites (Luckily, my category gets barely any submissions.)

Plus if a category is too big, editors rather opt to find sites rather than go through all the suggestions.

Please do restrain from posting such advices next time.

      Cheers.

That was satire. I have no interest in dmoz, particularly after reading about editors who take bribes to get your site in. I've never needed dmoz to get traffic or to make money from a site.

I hear you and i know that

People just don't seem to understand that dmoz is not made for webmasters, rather it's for the data users.

          However @OP,
To answer your question, yes i believe old sites rank faster. (Have tested it)

The new sites will get your site to dance in the search results, if you start heavy backlinking on them. After a few days the site disappears. Then you may have to wait pretty long for it to come back.

          Just my 2 cents.
