What does high really mean?

Does it mean the competition for this keyword is HIGH among the affiliate marketers or the advertisers?

Should I target any keyword marked as HIGH with decent amount of global searches?

Using my special ESP powers, you are referring to Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

The "competition" column refers to the amount of competition between people bidding on that particular keyword for their adwords campaign.

Then high is good or bad for an affiliate marketer?

It is philosophical the way I understand it. High competition means the keyword probably converts (or at least a lot of people think it does) so you can earn good money by ranking it. Also means that ranking that the keyword will take a lot of work.

You would have to weigh the cost/benefits as it pertains to your business and make a judgement call.

True, but it also means you'll be facing some very strong competition to get your website ranked in the first page of Google.

As an affiliate marketer if you think you have the time and the ability to tackle the competition head on and rank your site on page1, that will be great because 'high' usually means that there's a lot of money to be made by ranking at the top of Google for that keyword.

Obviously, that's the reason why you have a strong competition for that keyword, everyone wants the money

My advice, however, will be to try to rank for keywords with 'medium' or 'low' competition that has a decent exact global monthly search of at least 1000.
That will be a easier job for you to handle.
        Good luck.

        Jude.
