This email made my day...

Today, I got a random email with the title - "Help"... It said -

"I did not purchase this program.....it just started speaking on my computer....I did not download anything, am I being charged from this company. Please help!!"

--------------

haha...There is a video which plays on my website and she couldn't understand what was going on. And she feels she might be charged even without submitting her credit card information.

So this is a good lesson for all those people who think they know their end user. Always and I mean always design your site keeping in mind that everyone out there isn't exactly as technologically advanced as we assume them to be.

I couldn't help but imagine the scary look on the poor lady's face.

Now stick up a disclaimer on the top of that video - YOU WILL NOT BE CHARGED FOR WATCHING THIS.

    Made my day too

A few months ago a friend rang to say that everytime he turned on his computer it made the noise of an engine self-destructing. He'd watched a video on youtube. The video had gone but the sound track (apparently) remained.

I turned up and opened up Firefox. He was right - the noise was there. He had no idea about tabs in Firefox, which was set to open up all tabs. There were, literally, hundreds open including (of course) that youtube video!

lol ... it's funny, but it's not unusual. I've run across that level of newbieness. A bit of patience, understanding and taking a little time to explain goes a long way.

I remember once trying to explain how to download something to your computer to someone...The person didn't know what a link was, what it meant to click on things and what exactly a drive was. That was one long day.

that question from your client is not "silly" my friend. I have airtel broadband connection in India. I took up the unlimited broad band connection and ever since I became active in Internet Marketing, after 15 days in a given month, my internet speed slows down and it becomes very irritating. So I wrote to the airtel customer service about the problem and got a reply saying i have exceeded the 25GB download quota for the month and therefore the speed reduces thereafter in the plan that I have taken.

I was furious and said, there is no way that I or my team members would have downloaded so much stuff in a month and said something seriously is wrong.

They came up with evidence and it was shocking ....

According to them, anything that buffers is chargeable because it is as good as downloads.

This was a recent discovery and I know I have made so many skype calls and watched so many you tube videos that 25GB gets over quite fast in a given month. You need to pay more if you want to restore your normal speed.

So, please respect the query raised by your client. Ask her if she is from India and whether she is having airtel broadband connection.

That's not just in India. I am in the US and right now have Wifi only. I get get 3 gigs and after that am charged for every gig over that. Youtube is something I use very sparingly -- Skype, yikes - I don't even turn it on. I was fortunate because the company I am signed on with actually respects its customers enough to explain which types of features will gobble your bandwidth. I'm not a tech - I wouldn't have known that otherwise.

Funny story, but it's also sad how we sometimes forget who we are dealing with and what the average person knows about the internet. It's also sad that the average person knows so little in 2012... :S

LOL. My very first ebook used a software that
required the customer to download the file along
with the reader (much like a pdf file would require.)

After having to explain this to several customers I
    quickly switched to pdf.

I don't think there was any way of placing instructions
for such a rare case but some of the directions you
see on some products these days reminds you of
    such customers.

Even candles have instructions about not placing
them next to flammable materials and put them
out before going to sleep and some other
    "common sense" warnings.

Thanks for the chuckle. It's amazing that in this day and age people are so non-tech savvy. I guess it's generational as well.

Regardless, it's a good wake-up call for us to remember not to assume everyone has the "skills."

I'm sure at some point we'll all have a story like this to share.

Now I have to go back and make sure my sites are completely technophobe-proof. Thanks.

nice thread, thanks for the smile

and don't worry guys. I am sure in 10 or 15 years, when our kids grow older, in their eyes we will be just some "technofobes" like the ones we see and laugh at today . And they will laugh at us for not knowing how to operate the keyless keyboard, lol

LOL, very funny. You made a valid point. Those of us in IM think everyone knows the stuff we take for granted and yet, most people who aren't in IM don't even know the basics.

You really do need to know your market and design the site and emails for them to understand.

It is amazing how out of touch with technology some people are. A lot of people, in fact!

I find that it's the older generation where that's most common. But I do know plenty of young adults that can only JUST use a computer properly, i.e. basic web surfing and word processing.

There are a lot of people in particular that have problems separating certain technologies, for example, not even knowing the difference between the Internet and their computer. Literally.
