Simple tip to stop WordPress comment spam... do this Now

Everyone knows how hard it is when you get hit by comment spam in your WP blog. Here is a very simple solution to prevent this, using the question & answer type captcha:

1) Download and install this Plug-in: WordPress › Text Captcha « WordPress Plugins

2) Remove the default questions and add ten question & answers of your own. Use simples stuff like:
Type the word: WOMAN
United States of .....? (Fill in the blanks)

Nowadays almost all image based captcha are being broken, so use this for a change and prevent those stupid bot-made comments.

I do remember seeing an anti-captcha (or was it software?) that had some sort of "answer cloud", where the answers to these random questions were saved for later use by other users. So dont know how long this method will work. But it does seem better than regular captchas, I am using this method on my blogs too.

I just deleted the comments table in sql database. No one can comment even if they wanted too.

Problem is people automate comment posting, if it gets accepted even if its pending most software will show this as a positive accept. People then share these lists and before you know it your comment folder is full and the constant comment submissions are causing loads of requests and using your valued cpu resources on your hosting server.

I personally use SpamFree Wordpress, works similar but with uniquely generated passwords. I combine this with Askimet and get virtually no more spam.

I was getting hundreds of spam comments a day, installed this Spam Free Wordpress and it ended the problem 100% so far. I really like that my real visitors do not have to translate an annoying Captcha image and type it in. A simple copy and pastting of a unique set of letters/numbers makes it easy for real people to leave a comment. It's been a huge time saver and happy to have found it.
