Domain name help please

Is it advisable to pay for the private domain when registering a domain name.
I found a domain name that I like for my niche and think I will get it but if I can protect my ID in hosting or a plugin, I wont spend the extra money on my very limited budget

Thanks in advance
Scott

I wouldn't....not unless you are into a niche you don't want friends/family to know about, or you are afraid of stalkers, etc....

You should have business contact info on your website anyway....so why be afraid of putting it in the domain?

I don't know about the US but in the UK commercial websites have to have full details of the owners. Also there should be footers with details of the business owners.

I'm based in the Isle of Man which is not part of the UK and is not part of the EU. This small island in the middle of the Irish Sea is the only one of the British Isles to retain its independence from Europe. However as my sites are hosted by UK providers I have to abide by the UK/EU rules.

If anyone needs more details of these have a look here:

Sorry, that's a bit long. I really must have a look at some software to shorten it.

I always thought places like NameCheap protected your identity for free with that WhoisGuard if you opt for it when registering domains.

Hi Scott - if I'm hearing you right, I think what you're asking is pretty easy. I use Dreamhost for a lot of my hosting and they only display THEIR contact info when you do a whois lookup for any given domain... UNLESS you specifically request your information to be shown.

I'd imagine that most hosting companies have this as part of their general offering. I know I don't pay any extra money to get this - although other hosting companies *might* charge...

    Hope that helps!

    - Mark.

      UPDATE
I checked out Namecheap as suggested by CGJ1981 and that information was right on the money.
So now I have my first domain name through Namecheap and fresh hosting by Hostgator. I got them separately as suggested by many on the WF.
Thank you for explaining that MarkWinder. I am very much a newbie(trying for a new type -reverent- as opposed to indolent or insolent), and still don't understand many of the mysteries of webmastery.
Take care all and thanks. I'm off to build my first website
