Looking for opinions on re-direct vs. separate site

I have a niche site that is a plural, let's call it shoes.com, this site is well ranked and makes me money. It gets around 3K exact local searches with very low competition.

I was recently able to acquire the domain in the singular, we'll call it shoe.com. This domain gets around 10K exact local searches with just a little more competition, still low enough to rank for.

I am looking on opinions on whether it would be more wise to re-direct to the established site or if I should develop the singular domain and compete with myself.

Does anyone have any real world experience with this situation and know for sure what will work best?

There are many ways to do this, and all pros and cons. Here's what I would do:

I would keep both, but focus on developing the more successful site for the other site's main kw, too.

Once this starts to succeed, I'd transfer the other site's content to the new one and create the redirects. Redirect would link from each old page to a new page with same content.

The way I do this is through Namecheap. They have the option to do URL forwarding with Iframes. Once you set the Iframe you can set the meta tags and SEO the domain Title and everything. When someone visits the new domain, your original site shows, but your new domain is in the address bar. I've got a few sites with page 1,2,&3 rankings all with no hosting. I just place a link for the new domain in one of my existing blogs so it will get indexed quickly.
