Possible to earn money on writing on seemingly unmonetizeable topics?

Hi Warriors,

As title, is it possible to earn money online from writing/blogging about topics that seemingly cannot sell/promote anything.

My biggest hurdle is getting started and finding a suitable niche!

One of my main interests is sports and I'm a reasonably good writer. Is it possible to write a blog, on say golf, and somehow earn money from it. What could I promote? What could I sell? How do I make money from that blog? (This is assuming that I had already created some traffic going into the site)

Hmm. Golf balls, tees, clubs, shirts, books ......believe me, Golf is one of the most monetized and profitable niches in sports (even though I maintain it isn't a sport

There's no such thing as a niche which can't be monetized.

You say "profitable niches in sports", but is it worth doing it if even one of the lesser earning niches within, for example, health is much more profitable?

That's what my dilemma is, write about something I know a fair bit about and am interested in, or try to learn and write about .. toe nails .. and promote products within that niche which may well be much more profitable!

        Pick what you know best.

As long as you have some clear ideas for monetization it's best to stick with what you know best. You'll dry up quickly if you start trying to learn something new just for the sake of trying to make a buck out of it.

So what if health supposedly is more profitable than golf....there's plenty of scope in your preferred subject, just do it. (sorry for my sad Nike pun)

You can monetize most niches these days...Sign up to some affiliate networks such as amazon, clickbank, cpa networks etc. You will find a product for almost any niche on those networks.

There are thousands of choices with sub niches. It is up to you to decide what problem you want to solve for a target audience. You can monetize any niche whether its adsense, cpa offers, affiliate offers or selling your own products.

There are many sub niches in Golf that you can write about. The possibilities are endless! You can sign up with affiliate networks such as Amazon or Clickbank to make some money. It takes time and hard work but it can be done.

Any niche is monetizeable. If there are enough people
who have solveable problems, there's that opportunity.

Forums devoted to the niche will show you what problems exist,
google searches for related keywords reveal what to look for.

Find the problem, solve it for a price with a product that solves it.

I would consider golf a pretty profitable niche.

My niche is space - totally non-commercial - and I'm doing great. :-)

Onlien golf equipment retailers may have affiliate programs that you can sign up for. You could also try joining Amazon, Commission Junction or Link Share. I can't really vouch for Clickbank unless you are trying to sell an ebook on how to play golf.
In which case, you might go for a catchy title like, "Joining the golf club"

I think that it is possible to earn money through, but you need to be targeted and research your niche well. I've written an article about it here bloggingHow To Earn Money Bloggingl. It's quite detailed and might be useful for giving you a starting point. I'd focus on something that you are passionate about.

Only if you're wrong. Because "seemingly" is own vision.

    Yes, you can.

    1. PPC (Adsense or alternatives).
    2. Own or Affiliate products.
    3. CPM (Cost per Impression) ads.
    4. PPL (Pay per Lead) ads.

The best niches right now are the small little sub niches that you probably aren't even thinking of yet. You need to really drill down to find the great stuff. The really large niches are already done to death.

One of my best niches is a rare health condition my son has. I started a blog on a fluke and it has been quite profitable over the years for me. Sometimes that's how it starts, as something quite simple.

Go to Google Adwords and play around to find something that is being searched for but isn't really covered well yet. This can be a fun exercise all in its own. Good luck!

I'm more confused than ever after reading some of these replies.

It seems that the consensus is that it is possible to make some money but the key question is is it worth doing concentrating on something like this rather than a more profitable niche? Yes, I will enjoy writing a sports blog more but at the end of the day it's about making money...

I also just want to state that I am not really solving a problem if I'm writing a sports blog so those that say find a solvable problem does not really apply in this case.

FraserC, your website looks interesting (but then again I'm interested in the universe!) and looks like something like what I want to create (but in my topic ).

So what are your earnings from that site like if you don't mind me asking. It looks like all the revenue you generate are just from a small number of ads placed around the blog, is that right?
