Upcoming video game site, need advise

Hello,

I am a huge gamer and there is a game on the horizon that looks to be the next big MMO game that will have a few million subscribers for years to come. Obviously warcraft rleated sites have made serious amounts of money over the last few years and if i can merge a passion with something i can make a profit on then so much the better right.

I wish to make a site based on the game but cant really think of the content i should use. Many of these sites have people who can parse the code of the games and simply cut and paste to a database, these are technical capabilities which I dont have.

The only other option would be to spend countless hours doing everything manually, which seems like a huge risk of both time and money.

If you were going to make a site based on a popular video game that you felt would be relevant for at least the next 4 or 5 years how would you attack this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Well whats the game? WoW can still hold its own, even though Blizzard runs it. I mean people were talking about Rift, there was advertising everywhere, and now... nothing.

Many people write game guides, thats how a lot of the money is made. Others use forums and infomational peices to create a community website. How much do you know about this game? Its really based upon that. If you know a lot, and are able to figure out things like certain algorithms for deducing stats (someone in WoW figured out item score before they ever made that availible to the players) then you probably will be able to do well with a game guide.

A good gaming site can be anything really. I launched a World of Warcraft site after Blizzcon in 2009 when they announced Cataclysm and within 9 months I was getting 15,000 hits a month from 1 blog post a day. If the traffic is there (which it will be soon if the site is as big as you claim), then you can make a decent amount of money just talking about the game. Of course, if you're investing that much in a blog, you'll want a plan for later too - like Theory5 said, create a guide that will be useful to people. If you can get beta access or just play like a mad man when the game comes out (or better, pay someone to play like a mad man), you can get a guide out before the big guys do and make a decent return on your investment.

Hope that helps. The gaming niche is tricky because of how it comes and goes. Unless it's WoW or Starcraft, you have to get out of the gate fast - but if this new game is as big as you say, getting in on the ground floor could be HUGE for you.

Don't forget blizzard is working on a private MMO right now so if that's not the one you're promoting then... You may find that the game you're planning to promote will just die to the hype that blizzard can create.

Blizzard is the biggest name in computer gaming with titles like Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft

Just remember they will always rule

You can be the second best and still profit
Even Funcom made big money with their crap called Age of Conan, as far as I know.

    Is it Diablo 3?

I was thinking about that for ages, being a big Diablo fan, but there are some fast people out there! Before beta the best domains had gone, and now its almost release there are sites full of speculation and reviews.

Good luck with it, whatever it is!

Actually the game i am talking about will be Guild Wars 2. I understand the risk of targeting a non-blizz game but I am willing to take that chance with that game.

Dont think beta is out for that game but i will try and get in

Ah yes I remember the hype I had for guild wars when it was first announced.

Bought it played it for 2 days and never touched it again :[

A better choice would be the new star wars MMO I don't know how tapped it is yet though.

I've been focusing on diablo 3

Hey dracoboar. I often enter video game niches because I'm a big time gamer myself. There's a few different ways to approach content for a good game site.

    1. Deliver the news - give people the updates on the conferences, game updates, company info, etc. There's lots of events going on for these major MMO games like WoW. That keeps content pumping. This type of site pulls in a lot of fanboys of the game that are hardcore players... as well as the developer side of gamers.

    2. Be a player - This is typically how I go about these game sites. Play the game and talk about it on your site. Record videos of your gaming. Take pictures and give readers special tips on how to kill raid bosses, how to do crafting, etc. Stuff like that gets people super excited about your site. Just be yourself and share your experience with the game.

After you have some decent content on your site, you can pop up some affiliate links for the game itself as well as related games... or my favorite method... build a list with a Game Specific Newsletter.

I just started my latest gaming site about 2 weeks ago. There's nothing much to it yet, but it might give you an idea of the content I'm giving readers. The navbar links will be my pillar content once it's been completed..

    Star Wars MMO Champs

Good luck with it... and if you get something going, send me a message. I probably have a site or will have one in the game you are looking into. We could venture up :-)

For Guild Wars 2, there are several ways you can go. Look at existing sites for the original GW, how are they laid out? You'll want to have information about particularly difficult quests, special items, and other things that players will be coming online to look at. Since GW has a different system from standard MMORPGs (with the instanced "world" outside towns being unique to those in your group), you could also consider adding a section where players can socialize and arrange to group/quest together.

great insights so far - providing value, perspective, as a gamer myself I'll watch or read reviews/content for my favorite games - never been a fan on instances in a game, but understand why they set them up that way...love the suggestion of making use of that
