How much do you pay writers for content?

What is a good price to pay for top quality article writing?

How many cents per word?

Also, what are the best places to find and hire writers?

It really depends on what you want, I only use native english speaking writers and I pay anything between 1 cent and 2 cents a word.

Now you are going to have people come in here and tell you i should be paying much more and i can't get quality for that price... I can. I've been using the same writers for 2 or 3 years and gave them their first contracts. I then recommend them once they are good enough.

They charge their new clients much more than they charge me so I would recommend finding people who are just starting out then sticking with them. Loyalty works both ways

Thank you Thompson, what are some higher prices that people are paying for, and still get top quality content without paying what is considered outrageous a price? Any experience with how high a price others are willing to pay and the results they get?

For a 500 word article $20 -$50 is a good ball park figure, these are well researched high quality articles by properly trained writers, not by people who find a similar article on ezinearticles and do a quick rewrite

Ahhh... this is the best advice I found.

Do you know where to find such writers, and what kind of topics do people usually hire them to write about?

Good writers can write about anything.

Good writers are great researchers and they put the time and effort into making your topic stand on the shoulders of your competitors.

Good writers charge anywhere from $20-$150++ per page.

I have found some pretty good writers on Elance, by posting jobs in the web content section (not articles). I have paid anywhere from $15 to $40 for a 500 word article, but the content is the reason people visit my site, and any articles on there will represent the products on the site as well. If I have crappy articles, why would anyone buy an ebook from me? Its not for SEO ranking alone. So mine have to be informative and entertaining, on top of being written with English grammar in mind.

The articles in your signature are OK for $5-10, especially for people who don't quite grasp English or people who don't want to write.

      Hi Mr Thompson,
You said that you are intent on hiring native English speakers. Is that because you have had bad experiences with non native speakers or because you do not want to compromise the quality of your content? I am a non native writer myself and have been in this field for a couple of years now and I wanted to ask about why people use this categorization.

As for the general topic under discussion, yes you can go to Freelancer.com and take a chance at hiring writers for $2 per 500 words. As the price suggests, finding quality and originality is a tad bit difficult. I started out there myself and only recently realized I am probably worth a lot more. If you want something to be put together to be posted on your website or blog and do not mind editing then you do not have to worry too much about the costs.
If you want something top quality stuff that tends to get posted on other blogs then you might have to go for something like $15-$20 per 500 words.

  • Hi MindReality, I never pay more than $3 for 500 words, but on a specific network for article writers.
Here around, a good price is generally $1 for 100 words.

I always suggest to don't spend too much on articles, if you need them just as blog posts or promotional.

Noooooooooooooo Your blog posts should be as high quality as possible!

People share quality content, If they share your content then you don't need to spend time and money getting links to it. This is one of the things that google look at now

I'd rather spend $10 on a blog post than the money i used to spend on getting backlinks

Exactly, content writing is different (should be different) from article writing for the purposes of backlinking. Content writing should be written with more care so you can expect to pay more. $10 is a good figure but you can expect to pay much more for more technical stuff.

3 dollars for 500 words is extremely low and I doubt you could find any native English speaker to do that. You can easily get foreign workers to write articles like that but I will say again, quality beats quantity a thousand to 1. 1 really good article is worth a whole lot more than 10,000 really crappy ones.

It depends what you want it for. If I am using them for article directories, I usually try to keep it under $5 per 500 word article, however for my own niche sites, I have paid up to $15 per 500 word article.

You can find people here on warriorforum to write articles (in the proper section), or go to freelance sites such as freelance.com or odesk.com. Sometimes its hit and miss so start off with small jobs until people prove themselves.

The answers to all your questions depend on how you propose to use the articles, really. If you want ezine publishers and webmasters of decent-quality sites to accept them, so that you can get floods of highly targeted traffic from them, that's a whole different ball-game (and price-range) from wanting them just to fill a space on your own site.

It depends. For high quality, well researched work by a native English speaker I think it would be well worth it to spend at minimum $30 per 500 words. I've paid much more for work that was especially difficult and specific.

On the other hand, for backlink articles that don't require a lot of work and don't necessitate being written by a native English speaker I think $1 per 100 words is fair. Anything less then you will probably get gibberish.

I value my time quite highly so what I would be prepared to pay would reflect that.

A recent article on my blog was released Saturday and went viral in a very elite circle of entrepreneurs (my blog may not look the busiest but look at the quality of people coming by to comment, including well known onliners such as Marie Forleo and many multi millionaire business folk)

The article in question took me 3 hours to write. Well 2 hours and then an hour polishing. publishing and basic promoting. I once worked out that my time is worth at a minimum $100/hour - so that is $300 worth of work for 3000 words. 10c/word.

Incredibly that is very similar to what I charge to write for others $50/500 words which is the same 10c a word. I've even been paid that rate to guest post on other people's blogs. (of course it helps that my work is regularly featured on Entrepreneurs Journey and other well known outlets)

A quarter of the price of my buddy Dr.Mani, maybe I need to be upping my prices.

Outside of content mills and sites like Elance.com and Odesk.com where you can find incredibly low rates (such as $0.5 per 100 words), the most regularly offered pay rate seems to be $1 per 100 words, at least in the MMO world.

It seems that the consensus around here is that you can get fairly good content paying that kind of money (even though $1 per 100 words is not that much in my opinion), but that those cases when you do are exceptions to the rule. Generally however, if you want content of high quality, you are going to have to be willing to fork out with a bit more cash than that.

I don't understand why a 500 word article has to cost between $20 and $50. For the sites I have worked on I have paid about $5, and they have been written by experts. Then an extra $4-5 for editing.

However, the major think I learned from picking writers was to look for people that had a personal passion for the topic. It gives you the opportunity to use them again, over and over again as advisers, and take advantage of their networks to come up with better products.

Regarding where you can find them, personally I find great writers on Odesk, but you can also look up good blogs in your niche and contact the owner asking to use their content or ask them to write for you.

Yet another thread on this topic....

You really need to define what you consider "top quality" writing. The term is so ridiculously subjective (as evidenced by multiple prior threads on this topic, as well as this one) that the responses are always all over the board.

I think the correct starting point is not the price,
but the style and quality of the content.

I´am sure that you also want the content, which builds your
brand and fits to the already written content, even if
    that means articles.

Maybe the correct starting point is to figure out the writers,
whos´ style you like and then to make them to compete
from your order. You can do this at the many freelancer sites
online. It will require some work, but is surely worth that.

  • I can't say what you can get away with paying, but I typically get paid $5-7 per 100 words. Most articles I write are around 1000 words long, but sometimes clients want them up to 2500 words long. To be honest, I'm probably undercharging for my work and am told that by clients often.

Can you get people to work for quite a bit less? Of course you can. Can you get people to write less and still come out of the gate with the same professionalism, style, and quality writing you get with higher-paid writers. I'll shock you here, but sometimes you can, yes (though very often there's just that "something" missing).

There are a ton of broke and naive people out there in this economy who don't realize how much writers can really get paid and they'll work for whatever change you'll toss them. Some will even work for free because they're just that set on the idea of becoming a writer, whatever it takes.

But there are some major problems when you come across these rare finds, fantastic wordsmiths just starting out, and continue to underpay them.

They simply get burnt out on the work.

As time goes by, there are two things that typically happen. One scenario is the writer wises up to what's going on in the content markets and realizes they're getting paid pennies. They may not resent you for it (business is business), but they do raise their prices, focus on higher quality, and categorically stop being a cheap writer.

Unless you're willing to pay their rising prices, you aren't in their market any more.

Other writers just keep on keeping on, trying to compete at the cheaper prices - but only because they don't realize they have other options. And there's an interesting thing about human nature, especially in an online industry where even those just scratching the dirt are entrepreneurs.

We're always going to try to make as much money out of our time as we possibly can. This holds truer than ever when what we're getting paid is barely enough to survive on.

There are no economies of scale in writing though. So these people only have one choice when it comes to upping their pay (if they don't raise their rates). And that's to write faster.

I'm sure you can imagine what happens when a writer tries to speed up more and more in an effort to reach a pay scale that borders on civilized. When they try to fit more articles in less hours, the writing suffers.

The quality declines. More errors. More awkward sentences and less personality. More editing and complaining on your part.

If they're really getting burnt out, they start sending stuff in late and in some cases disappear completely.

    Can you blame them?

This is the kind of stuff that people talk about when they complain about online writers. What's really happening on the other side of that email correspondence is a writer who just lost the writing game and is going back to a job.

Because at the end of the day, it's not worth it to sit in the back room of your house all day churning out articles for $5-$10 per hour, articles that likely contribute nothing to even the small scheme of things, when you could be flipping burgers at McDonald's and at least have a social life. Hell, if you add in taxes, the loss of benefits, health problems, and all that other good stuff, even $20 an hour doesn't make that worth it.

One of the above posters mentioned that he has some good writers working for him that have worked with him for ages and still charge him the same rates. That's fantastic...for him.

I'm sure they want to keep him on as a client as he's always been a pleasure to do business with. But as he mentioned, they are charging their newer clients more, so to me that says they'd rather charge him more but don't know how to go about it. I've held on to similar clients for years, but believe me when I say that sooner or later you aren't exactly thrilled to get their emails.

But it's extra money and they keep sending jobs over, so if you've got the time...

I eventually mention to these clients that I have to raise their prices at least a little to make it worth my time but that I'd like to keep their business if possible. Most writers don't know the value of their work and don't have the business sense to do that, but if they did I'm almost certain they would.

Did you realize that at the rates a lot of writers work online, they aren't even making minimum wage? Considering that everything worthy of existence online takes fantastic content, I think someone's being robbed...

Which brings to question...Those writers have gone years without charging you more? Do you tip them? Have you ever offered to pay more because you understand the time and effort they put into their work for you? Assuming that it is actually high quality stuff they could be getting more for...

Of course, it's not your fault if they are lacking in business sense, but does loyalty really go both ways? Or is it just another case of the price of something being whatever the buyer and seller agreed on and nothing more?

If you're really recommending them enough work to make it worth their while, I say more power to all of you. Most people in the $5-$10 article market won't have those kind of recommendations to make, though, I'm afraid; they just don't have the social capital to offer that you do.

So they'd really just be seeking out new writers and dangling carrots.

Here's how I see it. A freelance writer is a businessperson, and at the end of the day they should really take it in their own hands to ask a respectable price for their work. That's what businesspeople do.

But a cheap writer who is willing to take 5-10X less than what he should...that's not a businessperson at all. That's someone who doesn't know any better. That's someone with an employee-mindset; hell, all legalities aside, that IS an employee.

And in my opinion, when you're hiring out of those lower markets and are making a good deal of money with your business (assuming you are), you should really be thinking of them as such.

In other words, after 2 or 3 years, you really ought to take it upon yourself to give them a "raise," in my honest opinion. Only seems fair to me.

Back to the OP...how much do you pay writers for content? How long is a piece of string? A better question might how much should you pay them?

All that said, I'm a writer and biased - no doubt about that. But since every person you ask this question will give you a different answer, try asking these three instead:

How seriously am I prepared to take this business?
Am I going to half-$#% it or try to build an asset?
Finally, how important is content to my business - my business specifically and no one else's?

Your answer probably lies in between there somewhere.

Most of the freelance writers get an average of $1- $2. I am a writer myself and I get the same, though I believe that I deserve more. However there are some writer who can provide you with high quality articles that will give excellent content for your site. It's ok to pay a bit more for these articles. Get a sample from them to assess their English and their writing skills, then pay accordingly. Most importantly look for experience.

I believe that there are good and bad writers at all rates. The price you pay really depends on what you want. So, try out some writers and then make your decision. Most writers already know how much they want to be paid and they'll tell you outright.

You can hire writers from the warriors for hire section, odesk and other freelancing sites. Look at their reviews before you hire them.

For me it depends on what I want to use the article for and also, if it's for a blog, how much money the blog is currently making.

While of course you want to provide the best quality content to attract subscribers, people just starting a new blog with little capital to invest can hardly pay $15 - $20 per article when barely anyone is going to read it anyway.

I pay $5 - $8 for articles on a new blog and as my blog continues to improve I make sure my articles do as well.

With a decent blog i'd expect to pay around $20 per article.

That's the reality of playing in the shallow end of the pond. There are just as many (if not more) writers as there are customers, and plenty are willing to undercut just to pick up work.

Train up and learn to go to the deep end. There is much more space and work to be had out here .

This is an interesting topic here. I consider myself to be a very professional writer and I charge between 2-4 cents a word. I guess it depends on what you want to get. I don't think the "best writers" charge the most and the "worst writers" charge the least. It often depends on the goals of that individual writer. I am not out to make millions, but to feed my family.

The coin works both ways as well. If you go to a writer and expect to get great content for 1/2 cent a word, then you have a huge problem. On the other hand, there are those of us who have been doing this for a while and know what we're doing. I often have long lasting relationships with my clients, which is what I strive for.

A good writer knows what they are worth and a good client knows what their writer is worth. It's best to build a relationship with a writer, than to hire random people to write for you.

I pay writers the same as what I'd expect to be paid myself - provided they can "deliver the goods" of course.

For a writer who consistently delivers value-packed content, I have no qualms paying $10/100 words.

In fact, I've paid more than this in the past (and continue to do so to this day)

I normally pay $5 - $7 for a 500 word article. However, at this rate, you cannot expect the articles to be perfect. Most of them have a few grammatical errors and poor phrasing of sentences, so I need to fine-tune the articles. You need to pay more if you want a perfect article.

"Real writers" often don't quite appreciate this.

Of course, what's being described as an "article" in many threads like this often isn't what you (or I) would call an "article" at all: it's just a chunk of keyword-optimized text to which a backlink can be attached: it's written largely for search engines, not for people to read. :p

I rarely write articles myself anymore. SCC barely scraped the surface of how depressing it is to spend hours researching and writing a high quality 500 word article. If you're not getting paid in the $10 per hundred range it isn't worth it.

There is, first of all, no top end for writing. It is not unusual for a real professional freelance writer to be paid $1.50 per word, or $750 for a 500 word article.

    There are, however, bottom ends.

The standard for professional writers is five cents a word minimum.

If you cannot get five cents a word, you are either not a professional writer or you are not getting professional clients. In any case, no professional writers' organisation will accept anything you do for less than five cents a word as "experience." It does not count. You may as well have written it for free.

The standard for amateurs is two cents a word, again minimum.

If you cannot get two cents a word, either you are a crap writer or you are chasing crap clients. There is no organisation that gives a damn about anything you do as an amateur, but if you aren't getting two cents a word I strongly advise that you stop calling yourself a writer.

This seems almost too good to be true if you are really getting good quality ready to use articles. If you have the time to respond I would like to know:

Do you actually use this service?
For a $2 article you need to do absolutely no edits or corrections?

A few months back, one of my clients hired me to write a 1000 word product review on a popular Clickbank product, for which I charged him $30.

About a week ago I was searching around on Google and I happened to come across his website. The product review that I'd wrote for him was now ranked number 1 in Google for a well searched for term.

I'm guessing that this product review is now making him $100's, maybe over $1000 per month.

Some people see high quality content as an INVESTMENT, and are willing to pay good money to get it, realizing that they will see a healthy return on that investment.

Except that guy who spent the money ($30) on the article probably did a ton of backlinking to get it where it is. No disrespect to the writer, but I doubt it got there because it was unbelievably good. It probably was just a pretty solid review that was nothing too fancy. Maybe not for a Clickbank review article. So what? The writer only got paid $0.03 per word. In order to earn a modest $40,000 income that would require almost 27000 words to be written each week.

          There's a better way.

Try getting paid $1 per word. It happens all the time. I'm not there yet. In fact, I'm just starting out. But that is my goal. Then I would only have to write about 1200 words per week to make $60,000 per year.

I just get basically nothing from this thread. We have the people who claim to buy articles for a few dollars. Most of the people in this thread who are saying things like "oh, for awesome quality you have to pay a ton of money" then have a link in their signature for them to get hired. Well of course a writer is going to say that. Heck, I'll throw it out there now: if someone wants to throw me $1 a word to write email me immediately.

My whole point is that a good majority of writers think they are worth more than they are, and a good majority of people hiring think the cheapest writing is the best writing and will look to get a writer who is good enough. So every thread like this goes in the same direction.

When the Los Angeles Times, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo picked up articles I did in the past (yes, I'm bragging a bit but it's to prove a point), I got some great compensation. In the IM world though, that just isn't going to happen. As much as some guy named Bob the IM Guru or something thinks he's got an authority website, he's not any of those three companies I mentioned. Any opportunities to make a ton of money writing (I'm talking about $1 per word type) in the freelance world are extremely rare.

So to make a ton of money writing 1200 words a week or something isn't going to be as easy as just putting out quality content. The truth is, a lot of people can write and blur the line between what someone charging $10 per 100 and $3 per 100 is. If you don't believe me you can take a look around. I graduated with writers and journalists at a top-5 journalism program in the country, and they freelance write just like I do. Why? Because when you are starting out as a writer, you have to do a lot of work for an average rate. They all charge in the $3-$5 per 100 range and they have work experience and credentials that blow away just about anyone I've seen. They take side projects to make ends meet.

I'd love to raise my rates, but that will happen in time.

If trained journalists are working at that rate they are being robbed. $1 might be too much to start off but $.05 certainly isn't enough. $.10 is the minimum any serious writer should be willing to work for, and that is just starting out.

Here's something to think about: the internet runs on content. Without content, nothing happens online. No products are sold. No ads are clicked. Content is the lifeblood of any online marketing campaign just as much as customers are the lifeblood of a business.

              No content = no money.

Low quality content = a hell of a lot of wasted effort.

If the writer's who work for such cheap rates would figure this out, they would be more willing to stand up and demand what they are worth.

                Hi Alexa,

Thank you for posting in my thread. I have also read a few other threads from you about article marketing.

Do you outsource article submissions? If so, which service do you use?

Which are the list of directories or websites you submit articles to?

Also, what is the resource box you use to ensure that ezines are more willing to syndicate your article.

                Regards,
                Enoch

Some of the prices being charged for original, well-researched, syndication-quality articles are way out of tolerance for the much less discriminating expectations as seen in this thread.

I have to agree with you. Yes, you can hire a good, native speaking English writer for a penny a word, or $2 a word, or $0.10 a word, or anywhere in between. Personally, I believe the price paid is a reflection of how much the writer values his or her time and writing - especially if the writer is trying to make a living writing.

However, a person's country of origin also determines how much a person charges. For instance, a native English speaker, let's say from the U.S., is living in the Philippines. This person might be OK charging (I've seen on Freelancer) $0.30 per 100 words. Now, working with an average of 400 words per article, that writer will get $1.20 per article. If this person writes enough per day, let's say one decent article in an hour - maybe two if they can research and write fast (not spinning or rewriting), that person would make (in a full time schedule) approximately $48 per week or $96 for two articles per hour. I've been told this is a decent amount of money relevant to this country's cost of living (I may be wrong), and in many other countries.

On the other hand, a person LIVING in the U.S. would never be able to charge such a low price, I know I can't. If they did, that writer would have to write 3000% more in relation to the cost of living here. With the average article being about 400 words, at $0.02 per word, that's $8 per article. Now, if that writer can write one article per hour, including research and proofing, then that person can make a minimum of just over minimum wage - which by today's standards is not enough to live on, so that leaves the writer rushing through the work just to put food on the table. Then, if you factor in any rewrites, which is essentially free work (in many cases because the client simply changed his or her mind) then that writer is getting even less.

For this reason, native English writers based in the US typically charge more, although you definitely can find US writers who charge much less and still get decent quality.

No; it's not something I could possibly outsource. That's the main part of my business, and article syndication is a relationship-building business, so it's not something I could ever outsource at all.

I submit to Ezine Articles, after everywhere else, almost as an afterthought. There's no point in submitting to multiple article directories, for all the reasons explained here: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post5068872

Anything non-salesy. I always complete the article in the resource box, and then just give a link to my site. Ezine subscribers are so well targeted that huge numbers of them will take a look, if they were interested enough to read the article in the first place. To see if I was being selective or not, I just ran through this thread. Here are the results.

People hiring who want cheap: 27
People hiring who say pay a nice amount: 7
People to hire who say cheap: 4
People to hire who say pay a nice amount: 16

So basically 4:1 ratios on both the points I made. Not the most scientific study, but I was just calling it the way this thread was going. I'm sure most in the past were around the same.

Another and in my opinion better method of generating good quality articles is to first purchase a good PLR eBook in your niche. Next, take portions of the eBook and turn them into articles. You could actually outsource that to someone for a lot less as all they would only need to re-write the articles as long as you supply them with the PLR eBook along with instructions. I bet you could find someone on fiverr that would re-write several quality articles for you for 5 bucks.

When it comes to article writing you really get what you pay for. As others have mentioned, the trick is finding somebody who writes good content at an affordable price. If I am looking for SEO optimized pages as opposed to blog post articles, then I am willing to pay more. How much I'm willing to spend is based on how much I can expect in a ROI from the site.

I think you need to change your mentality.

Here is why? and I will let you in on a secret of mine....

I have paid $2.50 for an article. It did nothing. It was ok, but still got no results fast.

I have also, paid $200 for an article, yes a single article of about 800 words. I will wait to you finished laughing, **pausing here*** lol I will tell you why. That content was well researched, and the information was killer..... that article went viral on many sites and social sites and brought in hundreds of subscibers to one of our sites and many sales. So I would have paid $800 - $1000 for the same article.

Every heard that saying "you get what you pay for" it is very very true.

Firstly you need to define, what it is you want from a piece of copy.

Is it articles that are going to respun (you need a good seed article) then submitted to many directories, or is it a good blog post, or a sales letter?

Also you need to define exactly what you call quality. The term quality can mean many things to many people.

From there you need to then do research on price.

You should pay your writers depending on your needs, you can opt for English article writers who can provide somewhat average content at a low price. You can check out odesk for a highly qualified writer who can both engage and promote your website, blog, or product. By visiting odesk, you can observe how people are willing to pay for their offered writing job. Just make sure that the person you hire to write can provide examples from their previous writing work.

I guess most of the time, you get what you pay for. I have been writing articles myself and outsource them. The more effort and quality I put into the article the easier it is to rank them. Google is not stupid.. They constantly update and change. Rather than spending money on massive backlinks, just use this money to have great content and it will pay out in the long run.

But I guess your problem is where to find these people. Recommendations and reviews have their limitations. I would pay 4-5 writers and test them out for myself.

How much to pay article writers... Hmm, being a content writer myself, well I'd say if you are running a transient operation with a sketchy blog, I guess its okay to settle with a cheap writer. But if you are looking at building a brand or a blog and hopefully get conversion, it is worthwhile to spend a few extra dollars getting quality content. People pay me $40 for a 1000 words and I try my best to deliver the best for them.

    Hi,

I pay people based on projects.

Yesterday, I paid $150 for a 300-words Arabic article. I'm repaid 3 times that by my client.

I have also paid $3 per English article for 25 articles to have some idea of a subject matter which I have no idea about. lol. Then develop those articles further by doing research.

Before, I have paid as much as $500 to develop a 20-pages ebook. And I sold the rights to a client 2 times that.

Last week, the same amount I paid for a 4-page folded A4 size leaflet of not even 100 words. After some touch-ups, I got 4 times out of it.

There is no ceiling, there is no floor too. I have got many content done for FREE, in return the author/developer is credited in an event I organized. The author values the unique set of audience and wanted the opportunity to create awareness among them.

It depends on the budget and the nature of projects.
No ceiling, no floor, its in the air.

There are so many places to get articles written for the $5 to $10 range (that's what I pay) BUT two more important questions are 1) what are you using the articles for? and 2) How important is quality to your specific needs? You can sometimes get a $3 to $4 bargain article but 90% of the time, it will be low quality... Buying article is just like anything else in IM, you have to test everything!

Why? Because when you are starting out as a writer, you have to do a lot of work for an average rate. They all charge in the $3-$5 per 100 range and they have work experience and credentials that blow away just about anyone I've seen. They take side projects to make ends meet.
Or you could learn how to market yourself. Just sayin'

I find I get good to excellent quality for this price

I guess they must be for SEO linking fluff.

I don't touch a job for less than $350 for a 500 word article. But then I guess I do "real" writing (at the risk of sounding pompous) that involves research, originality, a focus on the audience, styling for web scanning/reading, etc.

I would love to see a $3 article. Should be good for laughs.
So what is it you consider 'real' writing, and how do you find clients for that? How many years experience can you show to them?

I charge $25 per 500 words. I am always on the lookout to find clients who pay me the same rates I believe I deserve for the quality work I do. I do think 2c-5c per word is a standard rate in the marketplace. It all depends on what you're looking for.

If you're looking to build momentum in respect of building high quality readership on your blog, it may costs you 15c per word. The price depends on niche, time it takes to deliver a quality article, speed & efficacy of the writer and most importantly "specialization" required to catapult your site/blog on the first page of Google organically.

Content that is written only to build traffic is different from content that is written for the reader and hence weighs accordingly. Content written for the reader has a higher value compared to content that is written specifically to drive traffic and make a sale quickly. Organic authoritative content that adds value to the reader with a flavor may be charged on a varied basis and is never fixed. Hence, content is king. You should have a look at the portfolio of the writer before you offer the assignment to the writer.

Indeed, it does depend on what you need the articles for. I've heard of rates $2.00/500 words to $200.00/500 words. So I guess it could "slightly" vary.

Really high end well researched articles usually go for $50-$200 but they are written by experts that have years of research and experience in a specific field (usually they are retired consultants who write articles for some extra money). And for that kind of money you get an article that will be linked to wiki and will be read by everyone who studies that subject it will be a page of knowledge studied and linked to by many.
But these type of articles are few and far between usually they are the showpieces in magazines and high-end publications.

A basic article (how to lose weight, shopping tips, vacation spots, ect) usually takes a writer about 1 hour to write so a lot of it depends where they live, in parts of Asia and India $5 is a good wage for an hour in the States or Europe writers want at least $20-$30 an hour usually.

Well, actually content's worth only as much as you know it's worth. No need to spend an arm and a leg on establishing cool website hoping it will rank well only because of quality articles.

First off you need to do proper keyword research - you can rank crap articles on TOP if you target the right keywords in no time and then improve it as readers start to show up.
