Pinterest as we know it is dead. Help get the word out!

Please Help Get the word out!

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

That was the case with the last Pinterest popularity algorithm. It was of elegant and fair design that prevented spam as well as promoted new content. Probably the most important factor in the old algorithm was the chance for ANY user to show up at the top of a specific category page. This is vital because it gave regular users a chance to have their unique content promoted and seen before thousands of eyes.
However with this new Pinterest update that is no more. In what seems like a glitch more than anything, the brains behind Pinterest have decided to flood the category pages with content that is, at some times, up to a year old.

Let’s just hope this is a simple glitch because if it’s not, Pinterest as we know it has just died.

I first noticed that the category pages were not populating correctly earlier this morning. After dropping my girlfriend off at the airport at 5AM, I was able to pin several new pieces of content with no problem. However, around 11AM EST, I began to notice that no content of mine was showing up in any category pages.

Puzzled, I began testing several pinning methods that I thought would alleviate the problem and get my content to the top of the category pages again. After trying uploading directly, several proxies, making new accounts, using URL shortners, rehosting the image, and even pinning images I had JUST created . . . none of the images were to be found. I have tested every possible method under the sun to understand this new update, however, one thing is apparent : they’re giving preference to age. In a social age when new and unique content is what drive’s the internet, this could possibly cause a mass exodus from Pinterest similar to Digg in 2009.

Successful networks are the ones that give new content a chance.

Right now if you’re a new Pinterest user that has very little following, I’m sorry. This glitch (or update) has eliminated any possibility that your content will be seen as well as the chance of you gaining followers. Right now if a new user uploads any content it is likely that it will be seen by only a handful of users, if at all. The category pages acted as a springboard for unique content to make it to the popular page. It made Pinterest a level playing field for all, not just the Pinterest juggernauts that automatically get 2.9 million followers when any users signs up. Even accounts with several thousands of followers will not be able to compete with the 10-12 powerhouses on Pinterest. In the coming days expect the only visible content on the popular boards to be coming from these sources.

Is this fair?

Absolutely not, which is why I’m hoping it’s a mistake. Every user on any network deserves a chance for their voice to be heard. Reddit has its “new” page so users can vote on content that has been submitted within seconds.

Like Reddit, the old Pinterest allowed for every piece of content (barring a few exceptions) to be voted on in the category pages by all the users. The good content would rise to the top while the bad content would disappear into the internet abyss. It’s simple, fair, and it allows the USERS to decide what they want to see make it to the popular page of THEIR network.
Social networks aren’t built in backrooms and from tricky algorithms. They’re built by the voice of the community and allowing for each of those users to feel like they’re a part of something.
In conclusion this could all be a minor glitch. However if it’s not then it is time to let your voices be heard. Speak out against this change and let the creators of Pinterest know that the 10 million+ users joining every month deserve a chance.

So here it is . . . a new direction for Pinterest. I think it’s absolutely detrimental to the site, but we’d love to hear what you think by commenting below.

Pinterest is currently being touted by many in the IM community as the best thing since sliced bread. If it is no longer useful to newcomers that is a BIG deal.

Who cares what it's "touted by many" to be in the IM community. It wasn't built for the IM community. It is in Pinterest's best interests to make it uninteresting and not useful to IMers, because basically, they take a social network and do very unsociable things to it.

Well, there are some making $500-$1,000+/day on Pinterest. Now, they may be breaking the Pinterest TOS to do it, but they are doing it.

I assume that's why the OP was shouting (not that he should have been)...maybe he's one of them.

Honestly its their website, they do whatever they want, no offense but they don't want marketers there, they want people to pin what they like so the company makes money..they even changed their TOS to stop marketers from using their services..

Why do you think you are entitled to tell them how to run their business? because you can't sell your stuff?

This is what happened to pinterest.

People created bots and other software to mass post (or do it by hand), copying popular images and re-posting them, but with their own links included.

The site was dead if they didn't do something to prevent that. I imagine they're still experimenting with ways to keep people from spamming.

It is too bad, since I know a lot of women really enjoy it. That's the main demographic on pinterest.

marketers looking for magic beans, brass rings and lottery tickets

Yep, I was just giving the details of what those locusts did. Won't work anymore, last I heard they only "show" 1 pin per account every 12 hours. If what the OP is talking about is true, sounds like they are trying something else now.

I think this might be a new record. Pinterest has been around less than a year. It's been about a month or two since the IM Pinterest courses started coming out and we already have a "dead" thread about it.

I'm amazed at the amount of effort you went to in order to get back on top. Maybe that's why they made the changes - to get back to why they created the site in the first place. From what I understood, it was really meant to be another Social Media opportunity, not a get rich quick or lets see how high I can rank opportunity. Should be interesting to see what happens next with that site.

Pinterest has a small army of guys fighting spam and constantly changing up their site. Back in Feb. I was using bots and I would use them for 1-2 days max before Pinterest implemented changes and made them obsolete. It didn't take long for me to move on. If you're trying to make a quick buck on Pinterest then good luck, because as soon as you figure out a method to get noticed on there they will swoop in and make changes. They are doing a great job in scaring off the "spammers" but with this recent popularity change they might scare off a lot of normal users as well.

The thing is ... they will and he knows they will. He intends to cash in until they do. He's a spammer. That's his business model. He's done it with all of the social networks and will continue to adapt his bots over and over again until eventually, there's nothing he can do to keep them operating. Honestly, if this has you that upset, you need to edit your business plan. Pininterest could disappear tomorrow, and if it did, you'd need to have other marketing methods.

Plus, it was supposed to be a creative social network. Some companies, such as Etsy, have used it very well without breaking the ToS or spamming the hell out of it. Either follow in their footsteps or find somewhere else to mindlessly spam.

I feel like this is going to happen to ANY site with popularity. As soon as its getting tons of buzz, spammers are going to figure out a way to make money with the site. The site then has to change things up to get the spammers taken care of otherwise the quality of their site will suffer. Twitter dealt with the same thing.

LOL this post...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a little bit glad that Pinterest is screwing over Internet Marketers. One more thing I don't have to learn about!

This is nothing new guys, happens with every new platform. After all, even Google's still trying to figure out how to keep IMers from ruining the Internet. All the OP says is that after two or three months and 20-40 new WSOs being sold to thousands and thousands of Warriors, we've finally made a dent big enough in Pinterest's well-being that they've been forced to do something about it.

    Congrats WF! We've got sway!

I know a few people who do arts and crafts and have had a lot of fun with Pinterest in its early days. I think they got into the foolish habit of using it for the purpose it was originally intended. Shame on them.

Now I hear these artsy types, hobbyists etc, all pissing and moaning because the marketers are stomping all over their little patch. Pinterest are having to step in and try to clean things up and it just wasn't as good as it was at the start.

Now thanks to those darn people who had a legitimate claim to the service, us marketers are being inconvenienced again - having to read the TOS, adjust our strategies, be less obvious about what we do. And it's all the fault of those bloody artsy types, they should man-up and stop whining. The Internet is there to be exploited for financial gain, so get out of our way and find somewhere else to play, Pinterest is ours now, get over it.

'Calibanning' is the WF equivalent of 'Borking'. Think of it as 'mainstreaming' a phrase to actually say what the majority of people are probably thinking.

Obviously, it WAS broken. I'll take pleasure in getting the word out that they're trying to fix it.

Let’s just hope this is a simple glitch because if it’s not, Pinterest as we know it has just died.
    Probably a good thing...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Pinterest, lol. If this is a new policy on their part and not a simple glitch, like you said, then I definitely do see a mass exodus from Pinterest ala' Digg in the near future.

What the heck are they thinking?

They're thinking that they didn't go to all the time, effort
and expense to create your personal advertising space.

  • Rather fascinating...

Don't think you should be upset that pinterest is changing their algorithm and doesn't like someone spamming the crap out of them...

Also read a few articles re: pinterest... Surprised they would be having that much difficulty with spam, when it is relatively easy to detect and block... They need better programmers

Already? I only first heard of Pintinterest a couple of weeks ago and it's already dead as we know it? From what I'm reading in this thread, it was completely predictable. There were suddenly hundreds of courses and "products" teaching you how to make money fast there, so they probably got spammed and had to regroup.

no need to cry just yet (except you lose a steady 1k / day...).

websites / programs always changes and people / imers / bots adapt.

nothing new here! (ohhh and don't forget! pinterest is still in beta! they might go live and change completely now they found how people can abuse their system...)

Regarding the original post, I'm not sure you've got that right...

A few weeks back Pinterest implemented a feature that would reduce spam. Any user could Pin only one original item per hour (perhaps two/three - I'm not 100% sure and I don't think there's anything official) that would appear at the top of the category pages.

You could Pin as many things as you like, but only one item per hour would be placed in the Most Recent section.

This is an effective way to stop spammers from getting extra exposure.

I think it may have just been a glitch.

Just went through some of the "everything" categories and saw the pins in the first few rows were posted within "just now" to 5 minutes ago.

The only section with old posts was the "popular" section.

It's the first Pinterest Slap-Youtube, Twitter, Facebook
and of course Google have all had to do it. IMers will be
the 1st on a popular site and make money hand over fist,
then comes the correction. Pinterest will survive, and there
will still be some way to make a few bucks off of it-but not
as easy as the spammasters had it...

And yet...Pinterest bots are for sale on this forum. That I don't understand. In fact one has been touted on a BH forum before being launched as a WSO here and consequently moved to Classifieds. The other Pinterest bot WSO has Closed but I notice there are several more up. Part of Rule #1 for WSOs reads -

You may not sell any product here that endorses, enables, or facilitates the sending of unsolicited bulk messages via email, private messaging systems, or other channels meant for one-to-one communication, or for the spamming of forums, chat systems, or social networking sites.
Creating multiple accounts with the aid of a bot is spamming surely? Not to mention against Pinterest's TOS.

I noticed that too and I reported it. Make sure you report it, so the WSO mods can nuke them. Unless we tell them, they might not know it's shoddy software.

I think there is a difference between content curating on Pinterest and outright spamming. I'm just not sure exactly where that fine line is yet. I guess if you are using Proxies and multiple accounts that'd be considered spamming. lol

That being said, I don't think Pinterest is 'dead' - far from it. The wave of new users is continuing to explode. And short of stopping you from following people and or taking down external links there is anything they can do to stop IM'ers from driving traffic from Pinterest to their affiliate links.

Treat your Pinterest followers with respect and I think you'll be rewarded
