Article Marketing and Social Media Likes "or" Ghosts in Empty Sockets

Lately I've read several blog posts by supposed in-the-know gurus predicting Google will move away from backlinks for authority and toward social media likes, retweets, pins, etc. as the new authority indicator

I realize that Article "Syndication" Marketing is not a SEO tactic BUT I would assume that those who syndicate our articles look to our articles to enhance their search engine ratings in much the same manner that we covet the traffic and relevant high quality/authority baclinks we reap for supplying the content.

"IF" the soothsayers are right, and authority is destined to migrate from backlinks to social media "likes" will to have a negative impact on Article Syndication Marketing by removing some of the motivation for publishers to syndicate our articles?

If so, should we be anticipating the command and taking proactive action?

Is it common for Article Marketers to use social media in conjunction with Article Marketing to aggressively solicit "Likes" to build value for their content?

I'm having a little trouble getting my head wrapped around this. Perhaps I am simply jumping at ghosts in empty sockets. Sometimes the only exercise I seem to get is jumping to conclusions.

Google themselves have been saying this. Now more than ever they want SE results to be reflective of what end users want to see. Stopping people that have been gaming the system by devaluing backlinks is a great way for them to start.

At this point, it isn't even a matter of "if" or "when" even. These changes are already starting. This should not negatively impact article syndication at all. If anything it will help. For syndication partner to rank their own websites they will need likes, large amounts of shares and the like. How do they get those? By providing quality content. It makes them need your work more than ever.

I haven't actively tried to gain likes or anything like that from my work; but it does occur naturally. I intend to keep letting it happen naturally by providing great quality. I don't intend to "solicit" likes, I will let the quality of my work do that for me.

If it burns some calories, go for it :p. I do think that you are jumping at ghosts though.
