My website audience open their FB account first - before their email inbox...

I conducted a survey on my FB fan page with 21000+ fans. It looks like the number of people who open their FB account first is double than those who open email inbox first.

This shows a fundamental shift in how people use internet and we should focus on our marketing efforts.

Of course it depends on your audience... but you need to know your audience first before you can market to them..

I have opened every single Facebook message I have ever received. I only open 2% of all of the emails that I receive. I open text messages with urgency.

I go to Facebook to have a social experience. I go to Google to solve my problems. Which one is easier to sell to?

This is not an endorsement to game Google. This is to show why a large amount of focus is not on social media yet.

It is easier to sell a beer than a lawnmower. The money is in the social experience. That is where people go to forget about solving their problems

In certain situations that is true. But the fact still remains that when someone has a question to be answered or a problem to solve, they are going to go somewhere to try and find what they need, and like it or not the first place is often Google or another search engine. Places like Facebook are in fact where we go to forget about our problems, but that statement by you only reinforces my point.

Checking out your sig though I see that your business is heavily based on social media, so trying to convince you otherwise would be fruitless. I don't have time for one of those kinds of debates tonight . Good night.

They are more likely to complain to their friends on Facebook and then Google "Why does my boyfriend hate me".

I do agree that Google is the place for "expert advice" for solving problems, but the amount of traffic one can get from social networks outweighs the effort and techniques the typical IM spends gaming Google.

I did spend a decade "GGing" <-- Gaming Google.. but Social Networks provide better $$$ for effort .

Well that explains your point of view at least. Gaming Google is an absolutely horrible business model. You did it for a decade? That is a lot of waves to ride and crash with. That is why you build a business that helps people instead of playing a game.

Step back and make sure you aren't just riding social media waves now too, eh ?

"Gaming Google is an absolutely horrible business model" .. to be honest I have not seen much on this forum past spinning articles on a blog and paste Google ads + hope. Oh and then you can buy an amazing package from a "Guru" that will ..ummm.. teach you how to spin articles on a blog and paste Google ads + hope

                  But I live in hope

But I agree... there is no satisfaction in gaming the search engines and not having a solid well thought out product. One that can "Ride those waves"

You and I obviously don't hang in the same threads/follow the same people if that is the most you have taken from this place. You gotta branch out buddy and find people who have something of substance to say. Not going to learn much reading the hive mind regurgitate the same crap.

Just to be fair... you did ask your Facebook Fan Page... maybe if you asked your email list they would of responded the opposite....

How the heck is this a scientific poll? You used FB to ask your FB followers if they check FB before email.

Your results are skewed beyond redemption.

That's quite natural as at this stage....Facebook has gotten into the souls of almost every human being. We care to check our mails or not? We do care to check Fb updates. That's the trend now

I think you would have gotten a lot of people answering in regards to their phone not just their PC. I would imagine a large percentage of people now have Facebook installed on their phone set not everyone would have email. Outside of the IM world people nowadays use email a lot less than you probably think... especially the younger generation.

I think there's definitely something to what you're saying, Deepak - I think of my Facebook inbox as a more intimate space than my email inbox. Mostly because the messages I receive there are from people I've interacted with in my network and not from whatever companies or whatnot that I've given my email address to.

I think collecting email list subscribers is often touted as the best way to sell in part because people are supposed to think of their email inboxes as their most intimate space on the internet. But as you've pointed out, that just isn't true anymore. I like to focus on growing my Facebook presence simultaneously with growing my list.
