So I started my site thinking I would have a British audience and registered a .co.uk domain.

Now I 90%+ of my traffic comes from the US and I think it is holding me back on the SERP, google.co.uk has me at #3 or #4, .com has me at #6 or #7

So should I buy the .com domain, will that mean that all the links pointing to my site will be wasted??

Any other British marketers with the same problem?

Get the domain, make the .com your primary and set up a PHP redirect from the .co.uk to the .com.

Will all the seo work flow through the redirect, so it will go strait to page one?

I'm from the UK but I went straight for the .com domain because I anticipated it.

It's quite possible that it's more difficult to rank with a .co.uk in US search results but it's difficult to know for sure since a lot of rumours fly round and I personally haven't tested this for myself yet.

You could always try it and see, testing is the only way to know for sure... although it depends on how much SEO work you've done already I guess.

It's not necessarelly gonna go the way you want though.

The google.co.uk gives you an advantage because you're locally relevant, if you switch to .com you may lose that edge and stay #6 or #7 or may be more, since there's other websites more relevant internationnaly than yours ..

Just saying, may be your legitimate rank is #7, and the #3 on .co.uk is just a bonus

No your links and ranks will not get wasted if you 301 redirect your co.uk site to the new .com site! Its basic google rules search it from webmasters.

    hope i helped

i never thought of it like that but i think its worth the risk if the worst that can happen is i stay at #7

if uk goes from #3 to#7 i lose a fraction of my trafic
if i go from #7 to #3 internationally my traffic would double. the only thing I'm worried about is going form #7 to page 5
