I really like these infographics and think they would make great link-bait:

The Price of College
The Marvel Universe

Is there a special program for making those, or are they just hand build in Photoshop or similar photo editing program?

    Yes, there are many possibilities. I would guess a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (or their equivalents).

    This style should be easy to replicate with the combination of a vector-type tool (ie illustrator) and a raster-type tool (ie photoshop). Good luck !
