Google Maps for Local Business

Hi there -

If you read my previous post I am putting together a new website for a local builder who does Loft Conversions in my area.

As a test I signed him up to Google Maps for Local Business and within a few hours he is showing on page 1 of Google via Google Maps for several local area keywords here in the UK "Havant loft conversion" "Waterlooville loft conversion" (his name is D Scott if you are interested!)

These are all very close to his geographical destination which makes sense. But he does not show on page 1 for the local city "Portsmouth loft conversion" which would be good for him - does anyone know how to SEO the Google Maps for Local Business so that I can get him on page 1 for this term and others like it?

Also is it just "beginners luck" that he is on page 1 for the terms I mentioned - and are there things needed to be done to ensure he stays there?

Thanks

John

    Hi John,

Make sure you fill out as much information as possible in the spaces provided when signing up to Google local, this will help - remember Google loves content.

Get him a review or two, the more the better.

    Hi
I've had similar results with google maps - still tweeking this one
I guess it helps to put the city name in the title of a page -allso in site description
and alternate text in images etc
I suspect it may also hep to put a link to google map on the site
    Cheers
    Danny

We've experimented with Google Maps quite a bit as an add on service for local businesses (some people are also using it as their primary service when they're starting out because it's just so easy to learn).

There's only one secret I know almost for certain:

If you have a keyword phrase (WITHOUT the location) in the "categories" section of your listing and you're the only business with that keyword phrase entered in the categories section you'll usually show up # 1 on Google maps for that keyword phrase in your location.

So try adding the keyword phrase you want (without the location) as a category in your client's Google Maps listing.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

P.S. Yes we've tried many different recommended SEO techniques, etc etc...the only thing we've seen so far that definitely works is using keyword phrases in the categories section of the listing.

Two Things that, have worked and are not in any order, (1) getting inbound links, whether it be reciprocal or not from an established biz in the same local geographical area, ideally their website is nicely aged. Also Joining your local chamber of commerce, and getting placed in their local biz directory is normally a good signal to google for this (2) Placing your local geographical address on the footer, of your pages complete with local phone number and area code should also do the trick.
