Tips on not getting your Paypal account closed

I know that a lot of IMers here have had good and bad experiences with Paypal.

I was hoping this thread could be a good resource for people offering tips on how not to get their accounts closed or frozen. That being said, I hope this doesn't turn into a big complaining thread.

    Two that may help are:

If you expect a big change in the "norm" like you are doing a launch, call them plenty of time ahead and let them know then call them right before the launch again.

If you are going to travel outside your home country and accessing your account, call them ahead of time and let them know.

Not quite on target, but I would also suggest always have a second means of payment on hand. It could take several days to implement a replacement should you ever have an issue to PayPal, and in the meanwhile you will be losing money.

It's simple. Follow their terms of service.

      You beat me to it.

      1. Read and follow their terms of service.

      2. Act like a real business.

      3. Realize that Paypal is not a right, it's a privilege.

      4. Don't believe half the crap you hear around the place. There are way way more people who have never had a problem with Paypal. The problem is you only ever hear from people who are having issues.

        Ya know Will...

There's something about PayPal that often gets overlooked. Much of the time when an account gets frozen or restricted it's because of new, unusual activity. A large sum comes in or out. A lot of sales are made where there was little activity before; other anomalies.

These are often measures taken by PayPal to PROTECT the member from fraud or other questionable activity until the new activity can be clarified.

Do innocent people sometimes get a raw deal? Yeah, and it sucks when that happens. But most often when people complain that PayPal screwed them and they have no idea why, they absolutely do know why, or they should because everything is spelled out in their TOS.

          travlinguy,

Unfortunately, that point of view is the clear minority. It is much easier to grab the pitchforks and call for heads to roll.

I'm looking to setup a new Paypal account prior to a launch here on the WF. This account will be brand new, and so to protect it from (hopefully) the influx of sales that I'll get would you suggest ringing Paypal and letting them know I will be selling a plugin? Would I need to mention the Warrior Forum as I've picked up that Paypal are kinda phasing out accepting WSO's

Anton Nadilo and Tony Grant put out a pretty awesome product recently called Paypal Powerplay which got into a lot of info about the Paypal TOS and especially how to use the TOS properly selling on the Warrior Forum.

I agree with the comments above about running a business and following the TOS. I have paid a lot more attention to this with everything affecting solid warriors lately.

I am sorry to tell that this is simply not correct. We have seen many cases where people were following all of PayPal's TOS and STILL got there account banned.

I think people have failed to pick up on the fact that Paypal has an alogorithim that they run on each and every account and there are certain "triggers" that will activate an instant ban or limitation.

One example is if you drive either large some of money and/or a large number of transactionx through on a brand new account. In this instance you have almost 100% likelihood of getting your account locked down...and this is only one of the triggers we identified in our WSO. Buidling up a transaction history is very prudent advice.

Following PayPal's TOS IS crucial but is it only one aspect or factor when is come to ensuring you don't get the PayPal SLAP!!

      Cheers

      Anton

    @ Daniel Clark
Yes. Absolutely. Letting them know you expect a bunch of sales shows you're on top of your business and are taking care of things up front. You'll find the people there very friendly and helpful. And they'll make a notation about your account possibly becoming active which very well might prevent problems.

Yep. It is what it is though. Will got it exactly right though when he said that PayPal is a priviledge and not a right.

When starting a new product launch on a new account, you need to build the account up slowly which means don't crank on your advertising full blast right away.

If you plan on doing more than 5K a week to start, forget about not getting your account locked no matter what you do.

If you drop ship, you better have money on deck to bail yourself out pending paypal freezes your account for any reason at least for the first 6 months of business.

Some great points have been made. Even thought you follow the a ToS to a T, be prepared for Paypal closing your account for any reason. Its very frustrating when you follow the rules and they close your account.

Erm, no Joe. The exact opposite point was being made.

I think it's just as simple as sticking to the Pay Pal TOS. If you are transparent with your customers in how you go about your business then clearly you have nothing to worry about. I always get concerned when people post threads about how not to get your Pay Pal or Adsense account closed because usually it means that they know that they are doing something either unethical or downright illegal
