Re-Targeting and Re-Marketing

I stumbled into these two concepts recently an the more I Google them the more I get confused.
I keep finding products and services regarding Re-Targeting and Re-Marketing, but not one decent place to understand what exactly is it and how does it work.
I get the basics: it takes several exposures to your site/product/service/ad before the potential customer makes the purchase, so we use Re-Targeting and Re-Marketing techniques to keep exposing him.

Great.

How is it done?
Can anyone point me to the right direction on this? Is there a more extended explanation to this methods? Are YOU doing it?

    Hey there Arimont,

It's really a mistake to NOT be doing this sort of thing.

Since you understand the basics, I won't go into much detail but for anyone who clicked on this thread because they were curious about the topic..

The basic idea is that a most people who see an offer will not make a buying decision the first time they see it - think about the last time you drove past a billboard for a new car. You probably didn't drive to the nearest dealership and make a purchase now did you?

Many markets respond better to advertisements when they see ads positioning products they might want over and over (and hopefully in new ways).

Now, as for Arimont's more specific question...

There are many ways to expose the same person to multiple ads that they may be interested in. Many websites are joining ad networks that have this feature, but perhaps the easiest way to see it in action is to log into your facebook account and set up a small PPC ad campaign.

You'll notice that you can target people based on a lot of different things - including what they "like".

Other advertising networks plant cookies in the browser and watch where individuals go - showing them related ads as they visit other websites that belong to that network.

For instance, if you went to visit the adobe website and looked at photoshop, then went to a blog you might be shown advertisements by adobe for photoshop.

It's a more intelligent way to advertise (to people who are interested).

List builders do the same thing by providing more relevant products and information to their subscribers, based on what they signed up for in the first place.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    -Adrian

PS: Yes I am doing this. :-)

Thanks a lot for the info and the clarification.
I will consider using FB for a small PPC campaign for a start, great idea.
As for the cookies, do you use a specific service for it or have you got a script to put on your website?
