ransom demand by facebook

It's not of facebook's business what my 'personal' phone number is... However, they are holding my account 'ransom', after I've spent a couple years building it up (not spam, legit)...

Have you encountered this, and what have you done?

Thanks.

If you want to build fan pages, then they need your phone number to verify.

Just spring for a cheapo pre-paid phone if it's an issue for you. I know it's annoying but I don't see what other choice you have except to say bye bye to your account.

Fact is, it's none of their business... searching on the web, apparently even if you 'verify' doesn't mean you'll actually get your account, and in some cases are 'demanding' people send in photocopies of gov't ID... like, who the *** do they think they are?

And in an ironic twist -- they hide their contact information as hard as possible, and make it difficult as possible to get in contact with them... what's good for the goose doesn't seem to be good for the gander...

It's easy to have that opinion. I detest Facebook, but the fact is if you want to use their service and broadcast yourself all over the world, you need to abide by their terms.

When you put yourself or your product on FB you make it everyones business.

As much as it's irritating, the verification will prevent it becoming more of a digital scrapbook than it already is.

No, it is NOT their business. It is simply an abuse of power, and simply accepting it is condoning their actions.

Yes, it IS their business. It is their site. They are not making you use it. There is no abuse of power. It's their site so they get to make the rules.

I detest FaceBook but if you want to play in their sandbox, you have to play by their rules. Its really that simple.

            Facebook is Facebooks business.

If you are part of Facebook you become part of their business.

If you don't want to condone their actions you should stop using the service and I sincerely hope you do, because I don't like the site any more than you do.

I heard the same thing, but I thought that was mostly in cases where people are using a different name than their given, like Salman Rushdie. Regardless, I one hundred percent agree with you, it's ridiculous and none of their business., but I just can't see how to get around it at this point.

I'm sure if you had a multi-billion dollar business, you would to be doing everything you could to protect it.

        Give Facebook a break :p

You're right, it's not their business.

However, you do not have a legal right to use Facebook under your own terms.

So, if they want to ask you for a phone number to verify your account, they have every right and there's nothing you can do about it.

Nobody HAS to have a Facebook account. They're a private entity. If you don't want to play by their rules you do not have to do so. But if you don't do what they ask of you that doesn't give you some natural or god-given right to still use their service.

If you think it's none of their business, don't do it. Unless, of course, you want to use their service.

      That was my thinking exactly.

Who does Facebook think they are? Only one of the most successful Internet businesses ever created.

Does that mean they can demand to know everything about you? No.

But considering how many people have spammed the *!&@ out of Facebook, you can't really blame them.

Facebook just needs some serious regulations imposed on it, but fat chance since this is corporate america and they call the shots.

As with most "free" services, the user is the product. And the more information FB has about you, the more valuable that product becomes.

If you can't figure out a way to make use of a service on terms you're comfortable with, don't use it.

And why exactly does a social networking site need "serious regulations"? Of all the fish that the government could be going after, you want Facebook to be the priority?
