for me its

type in traffic/direct (but only once you have branded your blog a fair bit)
forums
seo
referring blogs

if your trying to build traffic up on your blog

1. make regular posts and be active
2. be active in forums and brand your blog from signature
3. make some quality guest posts on popular blogs

4. check out winning the web

they have a list of the top blogs in IM which get a lot of traffic and you will get
plenty of link juice as well. Visit these sites and leave lots of quality comments and you will build some good traffic from them over a few weeks and then just keep at it

Thanks. I have not tried anything with SEO, and I most likely will not, for my personal blog at least. If I get into niche blogging, I will focus on SEO.

Anyways, I am interested in guest posting. My question is, how do you find blogs to guest post at? And, when you find these blogs, do you just email the blog owner and offer to write a guest post?

If you are starting out then it's very important that you first focus on making money instead of just generating traffic. SEO should be done passively according to me as results won't be seen in months.

And in order to make money figure out where your buyers or prospective customers are and try to figure out very quick ways to get in touch with them. For example - If you're selling video games...go to a forum where people are actively discussing that subject and participate in it. Use a signature link to drive traffic to your website and that way you'd get some money to start up with.

For me, Brendan, it's guest posting. When I first started doing it, I would see traffic spikes (big spikes - like 2 or 3 times what I would get on a normal day). Now, my goal is to have enough guest posts floating around out there that there aren't so many spikes - just steadily higher traffic (which is what's happening). My own blog brings in a good amount of traffic, too - through RSS, Twitter, etc.

Even though I haven't focused much on SEO at all lately (other than to use certain keywords in my blog posts and in articles on my site), my search engine traffic has gone up dramatically. I'm one of those folks who doesn't obsess over rankings and whatnot... I consider Google and Bing to be "bonus" sources, since they can literally change everything overnight.

If I may ask, Brendan, why are you using Squidoo? There are about a million ads/other links on each page, all trying to drive visitors away from your lens and onto something else. On top of that, the content on Squidoo can't be syndicated. Why not take the time you spend on Squidoo and focus it on some guest posting or some more active article syndication???

My goal was to build up my traffic before I started paying for an autoresponder. I wanted to post content on my blog and try to drive traffic for around a month, then try to build my list and work on affiliate marketing. I hope to create my own product in the future. I cannot make my own product now because I am not experienced enough to help very many people. I can only pass on what I learn through reading, not so much through experience.

I completely agree with you about traffic. Not only can it change overnight, but it can also make your writing not look natural if you are trying to load it with keywords.

And, about Squidoo, I had never used it before, so I just put up one lens to see how much traffic it drove. It was just for testing purposes.

And, guest posting is something I really want to get into. My question from above still stands - how do you find blogs to guest post on? Do you just look for blogs in your niche and email the blog owners asking to write an article to be posted as a guest on their site/blog?

Forums are great for drawing targeted traffic but their effects are short term. 100 quality backlinks are better than 10,000 forum backlinks. I understand that you don't have time for article writing but they will help you greatly in ranking in the search engines. Search engines give you free traffic, how can you complain?

PPC seems to be a common method for traffic. Do you do this through AdWords or another program?
Also, do you do article syndication, or do you just publish your articles to different article sharing sites?

Wow, referred traffic is low! That is my number one traffic source, although I am not focusing on SEO, I just got into social media, and I have not yet started to build my list (but I plan on doing that in 2 weeks time).

Hi,

I have many websites that utilizes different traffic sources, some are small one page affiliate websites earning from a couple of bucks a month to $100+, these almost completely depend on the search engines. These websites I never even touch and they are on such a simple technical platform that simply nothing can go wrong(if not a hacker erases the files).

Then I've got a few websites where I'm periodically active, monitoring and performing some manual updates a few times a month. These are what we refer to as autoblogs, but I've taken them a step further and added real high quality articles in addition. My configuration on the autoblogs work very well and the search engines have been sending traffic to all of them for years.

I know many people had their websites deindexed or banned, but I have never had that problem fortunately. Luck or skill? .... it's hard to say.

I do build my websites on aged domains, that could do the trick, who can really say with 100% accuracy ... no one I guess.

Then I have my blog where most of the traffic come from Internet Marketing Forums, a little from Facebook and Twitter and a tiny fraction from the Search Engines.

So for me it differs a lot as I have a lot of different types of websites.

Over 90% of all my traffic is driven directly through article syndication in niche-relevant ezines, websites/blogs and offline publications such as trade journals, magazines, newspapers, and press releases. The remainder is through advertising, email, direct mail and some search engine traffic.

We use several methods.

#1. Press releases, these work well. Though it's like steroids for a week or so.
#2. Blog. We use our blog to draw people in. The keywords have been researched and then we write articles, shoot movies etc. . .

Those are our top two methods. We do draw traffic from FB, though I have noticed in my niche that FB users are not generally people who buy. They want FREE and in my business, WE DO NOT give FREE anything.

We also are in with schools and other groups and this brings in HUGE traffic. The best thing about this traffic? THEY ARE ALL BUYING.

The site I am trying to drive traffic to is a personal blog.

But, I am curious, for the one page affiliate sites, do you base your SEO on EMD's and backlinking? Since it is a one page site, you would not have keyword-rich articles on it, so I am assuming that you are relying on backlinking?

You mentioned in your OP that you don't have the time for article syndication, but what may be helpful for you in the beginning is to at least get an account at ezinearticles.com and submit 10-20 syndication-quality articles there. It is an excellent exercise for learning the basics in getting article acceptance as well as valuable exposure to publishers who use EZA for sourcing content.

When you have some time later, consider actively locating relevant publishers yourself either through search engines, trade associations or using time-saving resources often recommended such as the directory of ezines, writers' market, etc. What many writers have experienced is that getting articles published in context-relevant outlets provides floods of highly targeted traffic as well as secondary benefits of Google-friendly SEO backlinks.

Ok, that makes sense. Article syndication seems to be the most recommended method for traffic from experienced marketers, such as yourself. I will definitely take your advice and will probably use my blog posts, reworked, as long as they are 800-1000 words in length. I definitely have time for passive syndication. YouTube videos is something I plan on working with in the near future. YouTube seems to be an excellent source for residual traffic, as you stated. And, as I stated above, article syndication is something I want to get into as soon as I can.

And, for anyone reading this, would you recommend a backlinking service (possibly through Fiverr?) that could provide me with a ton of high quality backlinks? Or should I work on doing this myself? I am just trying to save some time, and I am sure that there are good quality, cheap backlinking services out there. I think that if I work on my backlinks and write keyword-relevant articles for my blog, Google will bring me a bunch of traffic.

I am not using Fiverr sellers for backlinking service, but if you want to do so, you need to find a reputable that have more reviews and high percent % to be sure that will not harm your website.

I like getting traffic from SEO especially Google, this is why I am ranking in the first page for the keywords that I focus in.

I do article submissions for syndication and it is easy and doesn't take me very long.

Here it is:

Write a high quality, never before published unique article.

Create an account and post it on Qondio.com
Once screened.
Ping the link at pingler.com or some other pinging service.

Create an account and post it on ideamarketers.com (until you get known and syndicated on there, you may want to pay a very small few to keep it on page one) this is not necessary after many people have syndicated you, then all your new stuff goes on their site immediately.
Ping the link.

After 3 days on ideamarketers.com, post it on your own blog, ping it and then social network that link all over.

I try to do this once weekly but some times any more it is less often but I still get traffic from the articles I have out.

Whenever someone new sydicates an article I know it because I will get a spike in traffic, signups and sales....it happened just yesterday on an article I wrote over a year ago. ;-)

Hey Brendan.

Google loves content, and if you add regular content, unique content that adds value for your readers, then traffic will come without having to spending $$$ on ads.

The passion for your niche should show in your articles. If visitors see that you offer solutions to problems, and information that is helpful, then they will return and you build your clientele in time.

For example, I started a new blog in October 2011, and I wasn't getting much traffic for the first couple of months, but persistence and belief in the research I had done prior to launching my site gave me the impetus to forge ahead with good, constructive and useful content for my readers. In January of 2012 I started seeing traffic and I now rank #1 in Google for each daily article I post.

I started another blog in January 2012, and the same thing happened. Not much traffic for the first couple of months, but providing what Google wants is the key. My newest blog now ranks #1 in Google, and most days my posts rank in the top 5 on page 1 in Google moments after publishing.

This is what's working for me, and I'd say in your case that patience and persistence will result in a payoff in the not-too-distant future if you stick to it.

I do not think you will find a technique that is not going to bring you traffic. Video marketing, email marketing, article syndication, social media marketing... all of them have their own merits; some are free while others take money; some, like article syndication take time, while others like advertising do not. Either way, my advise (and I'm quoting someone more experienced than me) is to focus on what you feel like doing. Sticking to any given marketing technique for some time is what is going to drive traffic and if you are aiming for high quality organic traffic, it can take months; so keep working at it and be patient

There is no good choice than to trust on what you do. Whatever way you choose to grab attention of online traffic towards your site you should do with confidence. Social media marketing has helped in getting traffic for my website. What you have to do is opt for "link back" option while sharing your blogs or articles or any other content in social media sites. Link shared in your social media posts will take your prospects to your website.

I think that a blog on a topic that you are interested in is very important, and if that blog is in a community that is also interested in your blog topic is a good way to go.

Doing guest posts on blogs that are on the same topic as your blog will work wonders. This does take time but if you spend a certain amount of time each day doing this you will see an increase.

Hi Brendan,

Have you thought of buying solo ads? It does cost a bit of money but it's really quick in terms of having subscribers to your list which you can send to your site.

Just be sure to check on the person's price and number of clicks he is sending to you. Later on, you can grow your list by doing ad swaps.

Diversify that SEO

Make sure your keywords are targetted chose only say3-4 to rank on, and add more once those are ranked well. CAREFUL keyword selection is the key here.

Drop Squidoo, I used to do lenses, but man, you have to keep on working them otherwise they will drop into "Unfinished". Waste of time.

Yes, I have heard great things about guest posting. I already don't have time to post a new article to my blog every day, but I would like to dedicate at least some of my time to guest posting. It seems like it would be excellent residual traffic.

Thanks for the advise. I will probably not focus on SEO too much for my personal blog, but for my future niche/sniper sites, SEO will be their main source of traffic.

Also, thanks for the advise about Squidoo. I just set up a lens to test Squidoo's traffic generation capabilities, and I only have one view on it. I have not done ANY marketing for it, I have simply uploaded it and left it alone, but either way, that is abysmal. No more Squidoo for me!

Like many people I get most of my traffic from Google via SEO. However, I try and do whatever else I can to get the traffic coming to my sites because Google is libel to decide it doesn't like one of my sites at anytime and throw it out. In fact I've had a few sandboxed before.

For my fitness site, Google's the winner by far. Around 80% of my traffic comes from them. After that it's direct traffic, then other search engines, then Facebook, then Ezine Articles.

I'm currently trying to increase my presence, following and level of traffic on social media sites though. Google traffic is great when you have it but they can take it away without warning.

I'd also say the type of website affects it. Certain types of site are going to do much better on social media sites than others. For example, humorous sites and articles will generally get shared a lot more than factual ones.

The key is patience...it takes some time in the beginning but once you start to see some traffic coming in just focus on those areas which are delivering the most. Sooner or later you'll find your sweet spot and there will be no stopping you.

For me, it largely depends on the niche. For instance, I don't get a lot of social media traffic to my sites in embrassing niches. It's mostly SEO for those sites. And opposite for the ones in entertainment market. For IM related stuff, it's paid ads.

Article writing is a good way to get visitors and guest blogging, particularly to blogs in your interest.

Facebook fanpage might be worth setting up also. If you struggle to get fans at first, you can always cheat a bit and go to fiverr.com for help.

Youtube videos seem like an excellent way to get residual traffic. That is something I will definitely look into.

81.21% Search Traffic
14.38% Referral Traffic
4.41% Direct Traffic

My main sources of traffic this last month have been from Facebook, SEO and Forums in my niche.
