which one?1 sales page versus blog with good content

My keywords are in domain name, and have over 500 Exact match local searches (gogle adword tool).
The competition is under 16,000 pages when I do the quoted "my keyword here", search in gogle.
Trending upward in google insights.

Here is my question. Should I just drop a long page sales page for my product?
Do backlinking and wait for it to rank?
Buy PPC traffic?

Or should I build a blog around the domain, write consistent articles and advertise my product on each blog post? (I'm thinking this is the better solution because google likes the original quality content and it would rank high fast)

Or a mix?

Please let me know what you think, why you think that and any field testing you might know about.

I'd go with option 2; but I wouldn't make a point of pitching the product in every single piece of content you post. That defeats the purpose of providing quality content that your users can use. They will just see it as a blog filled with multiple sales pages (meaning you are in for a tough time trying to build/earn their trust).

@joe- On a scale from 1- 10 , 10 being best how good is that search to competition matrix below?

If you're looking at it in SEO terms, this isn't relevant.

Slightly simplified view, here: you have 5 competitors, and those are the sites listed at numbers 1 - 5 in Google's SERP's for the keyword in your domain-name (because if you can't rank 5th or better, with that small search volume, then you can't realistically get SEO traffic for that keyword).

Key concept: it makes no difference whether they're the top 5 competitors out of 16,000 or the top 5 competitors out of 16,000,000.

All that matters is their SEO quality: can you beat them, or not?

Look at it this way: which would you rather try and rank for - a keyword with 16,000 competitors of whom all the top 5 are age-old authority sites with a couple of hundred backlinks from highly relevant, good quality sites (that won't be an easy situation for you?!), or a keyword with 16,000,000 competitors of whom the whole of the first page are affiliate sites who have bought in all their SEO at Fiverr and have a few thousand backlinks each, but all of the "forum profile", "article directory", "SENuke", "blog network" and "general crap" type (you'll overtake the whole lot within 2 weeks)? It's an easy question, put like that, isn't it? The one with 16,000,000 competitors gives you far better chances than the one with 16,000 competitors. But that is actually the question. If you're looking at it in SEO terms.

When assessing your competition for Google's SERP's, quality is everything and quantity alone is meaningless.

On that one you are asking the wrong person my friend .

I use article syndication as my main traffic source, so any knowledge I have on that topic is purely secondhand.

Can you explain article syndication and how I can get started please?

In America anyone can go straight to the top. And here's what's exciting- It is the bottom that is crowded, not the top.

Article Syndication Marketing: In essence, you write an article, and other relevant websites/ezines/blogs in your niche pick it up to publish on their site. This gives you targeted traffic, which you then turn into sweet, sweet cash.

@Joe, you make it sound easy. Send me a link on how to set that up for my site.

You could actually do both. You could have an exact matched domain for the sales funnel/page and a branded domain name for the blog.

A blog is an excellent way to build your business. Blogs rank well in google searches. Blogs are evergreen. Blogs build your credibility and increase the likelihood that people will give you their money. Blogs allow you to build a reader-base of people that visit your site frequently to read new content and allow you to converse with them in an easy way. Once you launch your product on another domain, blogs are a great place to use as a launchpad to drive traffic to the other domain.

The uses of blogs are endless. If it is a choice between a static sales page and a blog, definitely go with a blog. If you could do both, then do that.

The option isn't quite as important as the way you handle things. The most important thing is to presell if you are doing affiliate marketing. No one wants to be pitched at straight off the bat. I think a blog post may be easier if you are going to look natural, but as Joe said I would refrain from doing it on every single page.

@alexa - well, in the past, keywords in domain , low total competition pages and I've ranked top 3 in a few days. BUT I have put a blog with real content every time.

You're right about the backlinks, but I BELIEVE (my tested theory) that quality content, over time, will beat out backlinks. and as you said "fiverr" <-- LOL!

what is the difference between branded domain name and exact matched domain name?

An exact match domain name is when you do keyword research, pick a good keyword (like you did), and have your URL for your site be:
www . [insert keyword here] . com
(like www . howtotraindogs . com)

A branded domain name involves no keyword research. An example of this would be my site: www . brendancarl . com. I used my name. Another great example is www . problogger . com. "Pro Blogger" is most likely not a keyword that was searched for a great deal before that site was created, but he create the "Pro Blogger" brand by using that domain name.

I see, so the exact domain is sales funnel.
Branded, which could be ANYTHING, is where I would talk about the product?

Interesting concept and I'm liking what I hear. Thanks!

Honestly, you can pick whatever domain you want for each site, it really depends on the person. I have seen people use branded domains for sales pages and exact match domains for blogs (usually niche blogs, though).

The general pattern I've noticed is that people make "authority-like" blogs with branded domain names, and use that as a launchpad for products (with sales pages on other exact match domain sites) they create by creating one or two posts on their blog for each product and linking to the separate sales site in each blog post.

If you are in the internet marketing niche, I would suggest registering a domain name in your name (like mine). Then, whenever you create an account with a social media site, a forum account, etc. you can use your real name for this as well. If you put up a picture of yourself on all of these accounts/sites, people will start to recognize your face and your name. This will all help brand you and your name, which will boost your credibility (increasing the likelihood that people will give you their money) and your online presence.

          Good luck!

Anything you like can work. Personally, I use the Thrilling Theme right now. I actually wrote about it on my blog. If you cannot find a theme to use, check out that one until you find another that you like (unless you want to keep the Thrilling Theme, of course).

i would say test both but..... i would really go for option number 2 build a blog around the domain and build your relationship up with your customers first, and build them on your list on your blog... then you can eventually sell them your product once they have trusted you.

plus ranking for the blog would be alot better and faster.

    You should do both...

You can have your index page as the sales page and still have a blog aswell.

Set up a conversion funnel. First step is to get them to opt in to your list. second step is to build trust with content in your follow up series. third step is to sell.

CHeck out how seomoz.com does it....

Their homepage is a gentle "sell" to try their software. It clearly defines the value proposition of their site. They still have a blog link that "sells" you to subscribe. Once you subscribe they keep you updated with quality content that builds trust and "sells' you on the benefits of using their software.

I like that site and I think that is exactly what I'm going to do. Do you think that google still 'sees' the blog post that are at the bottom as good quality content? I'm thinking same concept, but different position of the information???
