This is an interesting list of changes Google made in their search algorithms last month, straight from the horses mouth. I always learn something new when I read these types of posts, so I thought I'd share it. Getting the straight facts on what Google is doing is always better than guessing or listening to the hype! :-)

Bonus - you get to see a bunch of their codenames

This is some great blog post and discussion juice. Thanks for the share. I'm working on focusing my business toward offline and online marketing methods so that I don't get slapped by the various Google changes that tend to happen every few months. It will be interesting to what impact upcoming changes have to a lot of the strategies that are being used. *crosses fingers that my content keeps me above water =]*

good info...glad to hear they finally improved the accuracy of the synonym algorithm...it has been way off for alot of words for quite some time...also interesting to note their changes to the interpretation of anchor link text to improve relevancy...this could have a big affect on backlinking, would be interesting to get more info on this change if anyone has it please post

Looks like the concentrated a lot on synonyms and geographic results.

I am not sure i am too keen on them extending the reach of the freshness beyond the news space. After all the best site on gout is not necessarily going to be the site that has been updated last.

This. I'm getting less junk traffic from google.in, google.ph and the rest, and the traffic I'm receiving is converting better.

Google is losing it. Anyone can understand their minds? Cause I really don't.
My guess is that this will apply to more time-dependent queries.

If you search for "best video game system", do you really want to read about the new Atari?

Tweaks to handling of anchor text. [launch codename "PC"] This month we turned off a classifier related to anchor text (the visible text appearing in links). Our experimental data suggested that other methods of anchor processing had greater success, so turning off this component made our scoring cleaner and more robust.
It's going to be funny to see how rankings for major cheaters buying links (with the same anchor text) are going to suffer - if anything...

    Curious on this one.

More precise detection of old pages. [launch codename "oldn23", project codename “Freshness"] This change improves detection of stale pages in our index by relying on more relevant signals. As a result, fewer stale pages are shown to users.
So, this means "freshness" is the way to go, right? New pages, etc etc. But at same time Google ask webmasters to create long, in depth pages cause these are the ones they want to show to their visitors... WTF?

Fewer undesired synonyms. [project codename "Synonyms"] When you search on Google, we often identify other search terms that might have the same meaning as what you entered in the box (synonyms) and surface results for those terms as well when it might be helpful. This month we tweaked a classifier to prevent unhelpful synonyms from being introduced as content in the results set.
This will be very helpful - I use synonyms extensively, but Google doesn't always "get" them! Fingers crossed that they might now ..

    Thanks for this list.
