Is Internet Marketing Really Your Dream Job?

For every newbie it seems like it from the outside (I know it does for me)... but I wanted to hear the opinions from people who have been successfully doing it for years.

There is obviously a lack of social activity compared to other careers and keeping motivated may be a problem for some people.

Has anything turned out to be better or worse than you expected?

I always knew it was going to work out. I had to make it work.

I don't really mind being on my own and I do see my friends most nights so its not really a big deal being on my own for like 8-10 hours of the day.

But, yeah, IM is my dream job and I love it.

I'm not sure its IM that is my dream job particularly, but a job where I can be my own boss and work by my own schedule. I tried poker before, but found it too difficult to become a consistent winner. Now I swapped to IM and I'm already enjoying it a lot, I can resonate a lot with what Ryan said just above. I don't mind working on my own either.

On the plus side there is an almost limitless amount of money to be earned, you have no boss, you can work when you like go on holiday when you like and enjoy freedom.

On the negative side its lonely, you have to be very self motivated, there is no guarantees you will earn anything at all, if you let it it can start to consume your whole life.

I think its great as long as you can keep a balance between marketing and real life, if you let it, it will swallow up your days, weeks months and years before you know whats happening.

I completely agree with everything you said here. I've been in IM for over a year and while I still have plenty to learn, I don't feel like I'm a newbie anymore. I want it to become successful because I want the dream to be part of this reality. I love working alone and having the freedom to go wherever to do something I really love to do. However, currently I have another job that's really stressful but I spend most of my spare time online working on my website. I think about IM when I go to sleep. I try to stay up as long as I can. I know it's swallowing me but I get so engulfed with what I'm doing that it's easy to lose track of time. Plus I feel if I don't work hard then I'm not going to be as successful as I could be. Even though I'm not making lots of money, I can honestly say that I love what I'm doing with IM. I'm trying to help people with work that I enjoy.

Thanks for all the fantastic replies guys!

This small post I believe sums up most people's views on working on the internet.

The main point is to keep a healthy balance between work and... well... not work.

Agree - balance is important. IM for me has been great so far. I make it a point to maintain contact with my social circle. This way you get the best of both worlds. Must admit that it does get a bit difficult at times to explain IM to friends.

Any job where I can be my own boss is my dream job. If Internet marketing fits that description, then that would be a yes. But then there's this thought of having customers. Wouldn't you consider your customers as your bosses because you're the one giving them the services that they paid for? ... Boss-ception? lol

Yup. It's definitely a dream job...well at least, a job where I'm not hassled by a boss or get forced to sit in a cubicle for 10 hours a day.

IM has given me the ability to make my own schedule and decide how I get to spend my time. But at the end of the day, it is STILL a job. You have to be willing to put in the effort to get results. It's not easy. And you won't be an overnight success.

You could say that internet marketing is my dream job.

The greatest benefit for me is the Freedom it gives.

No other job could give you such freedom, in terms of working hours, resting hours,
mobility, sleep, vacation etc. You can work when you want, how long you want, you
can work at night, you can work from home, from the cafe, from the foreign country.
You are not confined to the limits of local market, the whole world is your market.
The possibilities for earnings are endless, and only you set your limit.

The drawbacks are that you must have good self-discipline, strong sense of
individuality and self-motivation, and the risk is great. But the greater the risk the
greater the benefit. Also, one of the biggest drawback of it for me is not having to
socialize with your colleagues, but you can always get a regular job if you like

Internet marketing isn't a job or a career, it's just a way to market one's business (or money maker), charity, idea, etc. As an example: I have one business where I give dating advice to men, that's one of my businesses and I use the internet to market it.

But to answer your question, it's turned out far better than I ever expected. Though the first year was BRUTAL; I almost gave up more than once. I'm glad I didn't. Starting and running and growing a real business takes a lot of focus, hard work, and frankly, it's not for everyone. But to me the hard work has been worth it. I'd do it all over again.

There's no lack of social activity for me in any of my enterprises. Aside from my networking and mastermind groups (online and off), I make it a point to have a healthy social life. It's very important to take breaks, get out of the house, and experience some reality.

Whether it's catching a movie with an old friend, spending time with the girlfriend, going to an all night rave, or going for a nice, long scenic bike ride with my biking club or downing tequila shots with a fellow Warrior......there's tons to do and sitting in front of the computer is just a small part of my day.

If you don't make socializing an important thing in your life, it will atrophy and before you know it, you're spending 12, 14, even 16 hours in front of your computer. Been there, done that.....never again.

I thought I was retired and had already had two jobs I loved doing. Little did I know that I would develop a passion for IM. Have waded through tons of material to bring me to this point and the passion that drives me is doing my best to pass on pertinent information so others don't have to do the wading I did. The only problem I have is finding the balance that was expressed in other posts. I am so totally absorbed in what I am doing and need to learn when to call it a day. But I do Love It!

  • IM is my dream job, because it can empower an individual to do things that were never possible before. The best part about IM is that it is always evolving and new opportunities come every single day. It does not matter where you are on the planet, this is something anyone can do. When I read the book The World Is Flat it opened my eyes to the possibility of a global economy, where individuals, giant companies, and small businesses are all on a level playing field. The internet is flattening the world, and making it amazingly simple for individuals to harness their power and really make a big impact online. Also reading The 4 Hour Work Week was another amazing eye opener.

And it does not have to be a "lonely" road. For me it is allowing me to spend more time with my son and my family. And I attend a lot of meet-ups, workshops, and networking events. Also since I do offline marketing, I get to talk to local businesses, and help out in the community.

There are so many sides to IM that you can never get bored! It's my
"dream job" for sure! No boss, not being locked down to a certain place, and the freedom is priceless!!

Unless you are really young, how could this really be your dream job? The internet didn't come into my home since 1999, and I know a lot of people didn't get it until after that. So no, I wasn't in elementary school saying this is what I wanted to be when I grow up.

With that being said, I play a ton of sports and like to be active. I love the fact that I can work first thing in the morning, or late at night. The chance to make more on the internet side of things than working like most journalism majors in the past at a small newspaper is icing on the cake.

IM is not my dream job in the least. I worked in retail for almost 15 years of my life, and I owned my own store for the last 5+ years of it. I'm not going to lie and say that I loved every minute of it, because there was a lot of it that I absolutely hated.

Once I became a business owner though, it really changed my perspective. There were always the rude and harassing customers, but I can remember a lot of times where I could do something that was just a little unexpected for a customer and get the biggest smile from his or her face.

In my current day job, I work for Public Health in the State of Georgia doing disease surveillance. Most days suck because I'm talking to people about their poop, drug habits, and sex lives. (And these are not like you see on Cinemax or Showtime...you DO NOT want to talk about these!) There comes a time, every 3-5 weeks though, when I really make a difference in someone's life. I had to go out to a person's home yesterday because I could not get them to communicate with me.

After about an hour conversation with the person, I had told them that I wasn't trying to find find them or charge them or arrest them; I was, in fact, trying to give them information that could save their lives. They thanked me countless times and I left with the best feeling in the world.

IM doesn't give me that. People will never thank me for displaying an AdSense ad or a Click Bank graphic. Internet Marketing is not my goal. It is the means to my goal.

I plan to use the money I make in IM to give back to people who need help. Whether it's teaching a new high school grad to make a few bucks online, or helping a child inflicted with brain cancer to just have one good day, I want to do what I can to make people's lives better.

Internet Marketing, piles of cash, and gratuitous amounts of success are completely meaningless to me. It's what opportunities I can create using them that keep me going.

For most of us I don't think it was ever really supposed to be our "dream job." It was a way that we could make enough money and have enough freedom to live our "dream life." Basically what I mean is, no one to work for, no 9-5, no telling someone sorry I can't go do that because I don't have the money or I have to work.

As much as I love not doing work and getting paid, I really don't like the idea of helping a lot and not getting paid for it.

Additionally, I love the FREEDOM of IM. I can do it from where ever and whenever. On the pot, in the library, whatever

internet marketing is my job, and I have been in this line for two years. Internet marketing will be the main way to promote brand, products or even spread your activities. Some people think it is boring and we need to learn so much every day, but it really works very well.

Everyone is talking about IM as if it was defined by Webster's Dictionary... sheesh.

It's like Asking the question: "Is Telemarketing Really Your Dream Job?" Yeah, maybe for 5% of people out there...

internet marketing is just a frikken method... it's sure not a job.

I'm starting to think that the IM field may not be as glamorous as it seems it could potentially be. I am incredibly intrigued by the possibility of making large amounts of money just by doing work on my computer for a few hours a day.

The reality of it is that it is actually very hard work and very frustrating. It's tough to know if you are doing the right things at the start because you do not get instant feedback on your actions.

I'm starting to think it may not be the "dream job" I once thought it could be.

You're on the right track, it's very hard work, especially if you're not seeing success, or if you've hit some really sticky challenges.

So if you don't like doing it, just stop it already and find something you do like!

I know that sounds cheesy, but I've followed my own advice and it worked wondrously well.

Well, I love 99% of this business: the freedom, the geographical flexibility, the income, the be-your-own-man mentality, etc.

There's just one sore point in my opinion as you pointed out: the lack of social activity. It's indeed a "lonely wolf" business and sometimes that take its toll.

Anonymous that's because you know what you're doing. I'm sure you had your learning curve, highs and lows but found what worked for you and then you had that solid foundation in IM that makes it worth it.

I've worked online for 16 years now. I've had entire months where I didn't have to work. IM was non existent back then but marketers slowly got into the web. Some made fortunes. Wish I had listened to some and not listened to others. Now IM is getting into areas unheard of years ago. The best thing is to find those IM things that work with your talents. If you're lucky enough to team up with people who know what they're doing you can excel there too.

It's different for all but you're right. Not being tied down, dealing with bosses and nonsense. Once you get your groove on and make that great passive income the world is your freakin' oyster. Travel when you want to, go where you want to, check your stats, work when you want to, check your stats, and on and on. Find a country you like and know you can afford to live there. I've had engineers, IT and more who worked for me. Sent them to Thailand for vacation and you can't pay these guys to come home. Low cost of living and they can make $70k plus a year 'before' paying taxes.

So you guys and gals out there wondering if IM is worth it, you'll need the skills to avoid the scammers, find people who obviously know what they're doing and buy their products and listen to what they say. DO what they say until you find your groove and then rinse and repeat until you're able to chill out with the best of them.

My dream job is to play in the NBA...that's not happening.
Although I will challenge any Warrior to a game of H-O-R-S-E, lol.

Internet Marketing is just a small area of my business...the actual business
itself, and not just showing others how to do the same (IM)...that's the gravy.

There are rewards in helping others. I had a guy email me and tell me he was
making over $10,000/month, and it was because he took action on the information
he purchased from me. That does feel good :-)

I actually get quite a lot of social time as a result of being an internet marketer. I simply bring my laptop to cafes, and I frequently meet new people (hello, ladies.) or enjoy afternoons at the park (free wifi there ) drinking smoothies and eating sandwiches.

I also do quite a lot of product design, so that doesn't necessarily confine me to an office either. I can sketch on a sketchpad and bring that with me wherever I go.

IM is what you make it. It's really worth investing in something like a Macbook Air (or any ultrabook for that matter) and a wireless hotspot so that you can have maximum location independence and freedom.

It's not my dream job, though. The dream is to own large portions of profitable companies of thousands of workers, and to receive all of your income in the form of sizable dividends. At that point you have the freedom to pursue any passion in your life or to engage in any venture you can imagine.

    Hello!

IM is an easy profit job. It takes a lot of hard work and patience but it's really worth the time and effort. It wouldn't be exactly a dream job but it's really a great filed and I love being able to make it work out. It works with enough effort and time exerted. I hope that helped you in a way or so.

    Best of Luck!

I always want to provide value and make a difference to people's lives. My day job (yes I still have one) is being a teacher. I guess that fits exactly with my idea of dream job in terms of providing value. However, IM can provide more income, and can allow me to provide value to even more people, for a wider network and type of audience, globally. The fact that I will be able to do this from anywahere at all, on my own timescale, makes this particularly appealing - so yes, it is a dream Job - hence the fact that I am doing it now!

This can depend on the business model you choose. Some models involve the business pwner to be present and involved at all times for the business to keep running. I prefer info marketing as it is a model which allows you to take time away while still making sales.

beyond that, if all your traffic comes from making posts, then again you have to be more involved than if you are using banner ads, or something of that nature.

If you get this wrong, you can end up workiong 3X harder than doing a regular job.

    Cheers

IM is definitely not my dream job-- I am a newbie, sometimes I really want to give up but I have invested money on how to do this and do that. You are all right you had to invest more of your time, focus on what you are doing and be intelligent even if you are not. This job is not an easy one. I need a lot of prayer to built one.

IM definitely is my dream job.

I work a few hours per day, I have just returned from a year long round the world trip and I have 3 houses and no debts.

But the best thing is that I am my own boss and I do what I want (unless the wife says I can't)!
