What Stephen Messer, Founder of LinkShare told ME about Internet Marketing.

Hey Guys,

This is more related towards business in general. Just recently I had the privilege to speak to Stephen Messer, founder of Linkshare. He sold the company in 2005 for $425 million dollars. We talked about the normal "shooting the ****" business, but then I started to ask him some specifics, one of the biggest take away, especially for a lot of the newbies out there was this:

When he first started Linkshare in the late 90's the affiliate network business DID NOT even exist. So I asked him, " In the early stages how did you sell business's on the idea of expanding their business through your network... on an idea that doesn't exist"

He replied: It was all a numbers game, consistent direct marketing, in our first year we signed up 15 businesses...

Now stop for a second and let's take away something.

Raise your hand, if you personally would of quit your idea if you only made 15 sales in the first year. Just raise your hand, because I know you would.

You would jump to the next thing, but no, Stephen persisted on, eventually by the 3rd year they had 150 business's signed up into the network. It was only then, when they started to receive requests to be apart of the network.

10 years later... 10 million partnerships between publishers and advertisers... $425 million acquisition.

Persistence, Consistency, and being Hungry will all result in a very large pay day. Keep pushing on...

-------------------------------------

I asked him, "What are your feelings about cookie dropping"... he laughed and said, "no comment".

Very interesting and motivating. I know for sure that if I only made 15 sales in an entire year I would decide that it was time to move on to the next. Props to him to sticking it through to that nice little paycheck.

I'd say props to him too, but I really think he doesn't need it.

I think the $425 million sale probably helped him out a bit better than my "props" would.

Very motivating and this is a problem with a lot of people - they quit too soon. People look for the quick buck in this day and time and expect to get something for hardly any work. This business requires you to have a lot of patience and for you to put in a lot of hard hours. I love reading stories like this - thanks for posting it.

Hi Alcon, I don't personally know you but IMHO, this is the reason most people will never see the success they claim to desire. Do you even know how much each sale earned him, because that should also play a role.

This is probably the most important element to the success or failure of any business. People do something and if it doesn't work the way they expected, they just give up and move on to something else.

I'm that way. It takes something interesting to keep me doing it for very long. Some people are just hard wired to their vision and never give up on it. To them it is just natural to keep plodding along until they succeed.

And that's what keep's the world as we know it running properly. Everyone can't be successful in this way because there would be no one to build our houses, roads, fix our air conditioners, ect..

The powers to be must keep order by making it harder and harder to earn in this manner, which in turn weeds out people that aren't determined. Sorry to say

This is a great story/interview for newbies who feel like giving up because they only made 1 sale for the entire month. The lesson is to keep marketing and keep doing what you know is right, and continue to be persistent.

      Thanks for sharing this.

Reminds me of the post I read a few days ago about the owner of Truthaboutabs. He said the same thing.

The first year he hardly got any sales but he pushed on and by the third year he started really doing well and today he is doing 1 million in sales monthly.

      Cheers

You don't know that at all. If those 15 sales made me $30,000-$100,000 profit, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have quit. If I was selling $7 ebooks though, it would be a different story.

He stuck with it because he had an idea and in his mind he knew it would work. The 15 sales were confirmations that his idea had potential.

Just think of all the people that have been working online for years, some probably making less than that but they still keep pushing. Why? Because they see the potential just like he did.

I congratulate him on his success but I would also like to salute all the thousands of men and woman that have been and are currently pushing along, that may or may not ever see this type of success.

I went for years hardly making anything, 15 sales would have been a blessing to me. I seen the net's strong potential back when I was a teen and haven't looked back since. My ability to vision the potential is what kept me going and I'm sure there's thousands of others just like me.

I haven't even come close to this guy's income level but I do consider myself equally successful and if you can relate you should consider yourself equally successful as well.

I love reading posts like these. When a person has a VISION, making 15 sales in one year isn't going to stop them. Why? Because they can see 3 years, 5 years, and further into the future.

They just KNOW it's going to succeed. Couple that with some realism, once he made his first sale he knew he could make it work.

It's important to have a vision, not just a handful of money-makers.

Thanks for the post. It's always good to hear about great successes or any success really.

      And we need to be reminded of some key factors in IM success;

Dont run before you can walk
      Stick to a plan
Beleive it and you will see it (borrowed from Wayne Dyer)

Way too many of us (yep, that includes moi), get overexcited and jump from one thing to the next. We need to focus on a business model we find appealing and then develop that before moving to the next project.

This guy certainly knew how to stick to his plan and he definately developed it a whole lot - good for him! And good for you taking the time to share this story

Interesting read, the point of not giving up fast is quite clear.

When it pains the most you should work the hardest, when it seems everything is lost
the success is just around the corner.

The hardest thing in the world is to invent something completely new that doesn't
already exist, people who do that are truly special.

I love that story! Thanks for sharing.

I made $18.69 my first YEAR online...

5 years later, I run a six figure online business.

I couldn't agree more with the moral of the story.

Very cool to meet the founder of LinkShare!

    Best,

While this story is very inspirational indeed, what I would really love to know is if Linkshare was his ONLY business during the time he made 15 sales a year. Did he have any sustainable income from other projects? Did he hold a full time job? Or did he just put it all on a flip of a coin? Without knowing those little details this story is not truly complete, IMHO.

So let's not get ahead of ourselves, and remember that during trying times like this a person is still expected to make a living. Pay rent or mortgage, put food on the table and buy stuff for the kids. Putting all your hopes and aspirations into just one idea might be as reckless as investing all your money into one stock. Could turn out to be the next Google or Microsoft. Or could be the next Money Warehouse, remember where America goes...nope went for money? Just saying...
