Too old to start a business?

Ive seen on WF people have said they started young as a teenager or even younger like 9 years old doing IM and setting up an online business.

Is there any age limit or best age? Im in my 20s but get a feeling maybe ive started to late in this game? Missed the market opportunities to create several online businesses?

i feel i may be too busy at my age to start. I thought i had good time management but learning and doing websitse and having a full time job is slightly demanding. When your young you dont need to juggle so many things but as your older your life is different.

Should you really start young in the online business or wait till your older once your hectic lifestyle have calmed down a little?

Think of where you will be in 20 to 30 years from now if you don't start this business right now. I know many people who didn't start until they were in their 50's and 60's (and all doing well) so age does not matter. Just get started and learn all you can.

          I started at 35....

Since there are many here older than me, and I started near the time the Internet started to become popular, I am betting that I am not the only one to have gotten a late start at this...

Start as soon as possible, and see if it's suitable for you or not. I'm a firm believer that internet is the best career for almost anyone, especially in today's economy. No matter your age, location, gender. If anything ever will stop you being successful, I bet it won't be your age.

I've built my first sites while working full time, and it was a job which demands full dedication (like working 8 to 9, no weekends etc.). Website creation -and most of the other things you'll be doing in your IM career- is not as hard as it used to be a few years ago.

    You say you're in 20s. I'm jealous!

20's is still really young! Especially from a business perspective. There are people much older that have decided to go back to school, change careers, start a business etc. Do what you want to do and what makes you happy and stop worry about age.

I'm in my mid 20's and I've been running my own business for several years now. It's definitely not to late, age is nothing but a number.

Pick a niche in IM or whichever type of business you want to start, do research on competitors, etc, put together a game plan, and take action...then keep testing out new strategies to generate new business!

    Best of luck,

Yep. I agree. You're way past your prime. All the opportunities are gone. Forget it. Best to just look for a job as a greeter at Walmart.

Of course, I'm kidding and I hope you were too. You've got your whole life in front of you. Use the time wisely.

This is IM. There is zero heavy lifting involved. If you can type and click and have patience and hard work, you can make it happen.

In fact, it might even be better to be older. Do you have ANY IDEA how early in the morning old people get up?

Age is irrelevant. The human brain, unlike our bodies doesn't really grow 'old'.
Therefore, you can get great ideas at any age. Plus, success in any business requires certain traits like determination, perseverance and great faith that are not age related.

    The Old Geezer

The only time I feel as old as The Old Geezer is when I wake up in the morning with the aches, pains, farts, belches, creaking joints and unable to remember my name. Fact is that's an every morning deal for me now. But I still work on my IM and have been doing so for the past 7 years.

I'm 69 in a few days and was 62 when I started trying to learn IM. It took 2 years to start making money and another 2 years to start making good money. There is no way I could have done so if I thought I was to old. I suspect strongly I will continue to not be to old until the day they fire up the crematoria flames under my dead butt.

Sacrifice some of your social life and be willing to put a plan together; then go for it. Good planning on your part will help you get started right now instead of putting it off and possibly putting it off until, you have 1 foot in the grave and your other foot on a slippery pile of s***t sending you into the grave.

Man you are in your 20's and thinking you may be to old to start anything new. Right now is the time you should be kicking butt and taking names in anything you want to do.

      Here is a true story from his 1974 autobiography " a sixth-grade dropout, a farmhand, an army mule-tender, a locomotive fireman, a railroad worker,etc..,finally a restaurateur.

At the age of 65, a new interstate highway snatched the traffic away from his Corbin, Ky., restaurant and Sanders was left with nothing but a Social Security check and a secret recipe for fried chicken " "Less than 10 years later, Sanders had more than 600 KFC franchises in the U.S. and Canada,"

If Colonel Sanders started a business at 65 you can at your age !!!

      Now get to work

I read post #1, skimmed through the others but my mind kept going back to the thought that a person in their 20s could be asking whether they were too old.

Oh my oh my, what chance do I stand as I settle into my 50s? The thing is, I am older, wiser and far more experienced than in my 20s, have far more to offer and still have a capacity to light some fires of success in them old befuddled mind vaults.

If you are in your 20s, 30s or 80s, don't ask if you are too old, just do what you feel is right and best for you and then do it to your best ability and no matter how old you are, you too can start, re-start or have a great time in trying...

If you think you are too young or too old there is one thing you can do about this:

Buy up a ready made business and have people manage it for you. The options in life is almost endless that i found it difficult to say its impossible. Everything is possible.

There's no such thing as too old or young to start a business.

Most people, I believe, who start offline businesses are middle-aged. Don't worry about it.

Prodigious inquiry. The quote, "tomorrow never comes" applies.

(I could think of a plethora of businesses I'd like to start, but I'd need to win the lottery to start any of them tomorrow.)

You HAVE to be old to start a good business.

        Not really.

        Experience is a key though.

    I hope mid-20s isn't too old since I'm 27.

I've learned that as long as I zoom in the screen to be about 400% of normal size and get some exercise every few hours with my walker, I'm fine.

I'm old enough to be your mother! I have kids who are 24 and 29. You are not too old nor are you too young to start an internet business. We have had our first online biz going for just over two years and our next one is in the works, we hope to have it up and running by the end of the month. We have been self employed in the real world for over 17 years and wouldnt have it any other way.

Figure our what your skills are and what you'd like to sell online and do your research and get started! It takes time and hard work and dedication but you can do it if you really want to.

If you think you are too old, or not old at all, you are correct.

Making money in the internet is all about your ability to adapt to the correct mentality. That is all. In general, older people tend to not be so flexible in adapting to new ideas, however, i know several people who dont' fit that bill. So it doesn't apply to everyone.

    Good luck!

Why are we talking about this "too old to fart business" again? :p

I met a lady online about five years ago, who started a business at the age of 88. Her business took off as if it had Red Bull Wings...

Within her first 18 months in business, she had already hired 9 people to work for her, and she wasn't even ready to roll over and die just yet.

There is no age limit. Just do it.

The internet is only going to grow and grow and knowing more about it can only help you in the rest of your life, most likely.

Start social networking from the perspective of a business owner, only posts things you would want your parents and grandparents to read and that are professional, that way, you can start branding yourself.

I don't need or want a job since I've been self employed since my first job out of college, however, just because of my social networks (well, and my experience), I get several executive job offers a week, several joint venture offers a week and other professional type offers, too. Just from twitter, I've gotten offers to co-write some books with some of the top best selling authors in my niche.

My point is, regardless of whether you make any money online now, (and I hope you do) the knowledge and experience you will gain from the experience will be valuable.

Plus, some very vital a key elements of any successful entrepreneur, imho, are the ability to take risks, the ability to manage their time & multiple projects, and the ability to be self motivated.

By jumping into IM, you can start to train yourself in all those things.

    Good luck.

There are a lot of great answers in this thread. I have kids that are old than you, so I have heard it all before. My daughter, at 27, thinks she is too old to start some things, that life has passed her by already.

It's never too late, but better to start now than wait.

  • Hi, the age in this field has no importance at all, and I started when I was around 26 years old.

The most important thing you need is a good method, including new ideas to develop, and a good learning curve.
Every day new methods are exposed by anyone, and each one can grab his slice of success.

Do it with the desire to become rich, and success will arrive.
But remember... never give up for any reason!

    See you soon,

I started 18 months ago give or take. I'm still learning

You're a young'un and you've got plenty of time to do whatever you want.

It still amazes me that the internet has come this far, I remember being about 16 when email first came on the scene. And it was mostly DOS based. Gawd, now that was a learning curve haha

Well.......I'm a bit older than that and I remember when there were only big main frames in banks and everything else was done by hand.

The first personal computers were amazing to us and now my cell phone has more capabilities than the first computers we used in business.

Yes! And I even remember going to the grocer with my mum and having things punched into an old till because barcodes did not exist lol

I still haven't succumbed to a smartphone though. My H wants us to get the Windows 7 phone and I've been digging in my heels. I played with it the store and that thing is AMAZING with what it can do.

What? In your 20's and its to late?
I started in this when I was 49!!

    There is a great saying:
" When is the best time to plant a tree? Ten years ago. When is the second best time? Today"

Never stop learning. It is a cumulative process. The smartest woman I ever met was my grandmother. When she was in her 70's she knew the answer to every question I could throw at her from art to science because she never stopped reading and never stopped learning.

I'll assume you're serious, but that's still a funny comment! lol

What, were you supposed to start an online business when you were 14? I started working online in my 40's, and I've never felt for one second that age was a barrier to internet success.

You are definitely not to old. What you should do if you are serious is to set aside a certain amount of time every day to focus on your online business. Do not worry about how fast you get there just keep plugging away and as one thing build on the other it will grow.

    I hope this helps.

20s is not too old for doing anything, not too youth neither. And I mean anything!

How come a girl at 20s uses the word 'OLD' to describe herself?!

To me, it seems that it is the 'fear' that stops you. I like a sentence from Sara:"Feel the fear, but do it anyway!"

If you are busy, do it slowly. But never stop!

I am a newbie too, and I am very confident. I believe I can succeed sooner or later. And you too!

As others have said, you are considered one of the youngest in IM business strata. A good percentage of people in this business are aged more than double your age and are very successful.
