How many impressions to test a Banner Ad?

Hey guys,

I'm buying banner ads advertisement on a website and have a bunch of banners to test.

How many impressions would you recommend per each banner, to effectively test it?

Thanks...

I recently read that the average click-through on banners is just 0,28% so I recommend not doing banner at all because it will probably cost you more that it will make you, but it depends on how much you have to pay I guess. but if you want to test one I think you should do at least 3000 impressions and than look if you made more than it costs. But I think banner advertising isn't the best way to promote a product. But if he sells it for very less money you could always give it a shot .

Thanks for your reply man. I actually have a high converting landing page and offer (tested them), and if the average ctr for banners is 0.28% (I thought it was a lot less), then I would still be in great profit Also the sites I'm going to buy banners from are very targeted to my niche.

I'm gonna go with your advice. 3000 impressions per banner. Should be enough I guess, although I thought I should assign more per each creative.

I wouldn't say count it on impressions alone, try during a set time duration and test them at the same time. try to minimize all variables when doing testing!

Yeah, I'm testing them all at the same time. What I can't control (I think) is the position of the creative. For each creative size, the sites that will serve them have like 2 or more positions (left, right, top or bottom... except for the 728x90 header leaderboards ones).

I told them I want to run all of them at the same time. (around 20... too much I think, but has to be done).

Minimum of 1000 but you should have someone who knows copywriting look at your ad first. A poor ad will mess up your results.

I have no experience with banner ads, but I read one of the experts in the field,
who recommends at least 1000 impressions.

As many as possible I say. I'd agree with the guy above about a minimum of 1,000 though.

    You need at least 1,000.

But it really depends. Sometimes you will know the ones that just don't work won't need a whole lot of impressions.

Really you need to spend more than the sale/CPA to get accurate info, but most of the time you're just trying to find the one with the highest CTR so its relevant to the rest.

For the banner ads that I just tested we used a benchmark of 5000 impressions. Sounds lIke a lot, it really did not take much time on a high traffic site.

Banner ads can be an amazing reliable source of traffic, but only if you have a boat full of money to test.

All the big guys, even though they know copywriting very well, still spend lots of money and oftentimes loose a large portion of the thousands of dollars they put in banner ads.

Paid advertising can be a pain if you don't know what you're doing.
