Choice of Plugins

I am having trouble with choosing plugins for my WordPress website, What criteria should I use to avoid installing plugins that only serve to make my site ineffecient and at times inaccessible?

Hi Reinhard, in my life I used just 4 plugins for every Wordpress install.
They are:

1) Akismet for spam comments block
2) All In One SEO Pack for SEO
3) Google XML Sitemaps for optimizing sitemap creation
4) Statpress Reloaded for checking traffic and visits

They are simply what permits you to grab the lead on first Google page, because the most relevant part of a Wordpress blog is your articles.
