What To Do If You're Looking for Article Writing Gigs

by rooze

This place is awash with posts/comments from working and would-be article writers -

1 - I'm an article writer where can I find work
2 - I'm not getting paid enough as an article writer
3 - I'm desperate, I'll work for $5 /article
4 - Where did all the article writing gigs go

And countless variations of the above.

Can I just offer a small word of advice to those who are active or looking to be active as article writers - everything you write on this forum or in any other public place becomes a part of your resume (Curriculum Vitae).

If you post a thread or comment and litter it with spelling/grammatical errors, you're basically saying to people "Don't hire me".
I've seen several 'article writers' in the past few days pop up and basically pull the rug out from under themselves with sloppily constructed comments.
Also, I've had people write to me offering 'professional article writing services' (through places like Elance, Freelancer etc) and their 'offers' have been littered with the same sloppy writing style and grammar.

As an article writer, you can't just 'switch off' when you're posting in forums or blogs, you are in the spotlight and you need to make your words work for you.

It's little wonder the base level for writing commands such a low rate of pay.
I don't mean to be hurtful or disrespectful, but there's a lot you can do to improve your own situation if you'd just be a little more careful about how you present yourselves to prospective customers.
There are many exceptions of course, but I suspect they're not the ones who would be drawn to the title of this thread in the first instance.

Cheers

Exactly, but it's often more subtle than that.

Just to be clear, I'm not being critical, I feel bad when I see people having to fight for a low paying gig. I just think there are things people can do for themselves to improve their own circumstances, and what I'm suggesting isn't really difficult.

rooze has mad an excellent point herer guys. All them things you put on the internet is availabl for ur clients to see. Just sooper happy I keep my english perfect in all the posts. Makes me get hired super quick.

  • That is a very good point you made. How do you expect to land writing gigs when you are not using proper English? I know I would not hire someone who has p0or grammar skills and lots of misspelled words in their thread. You are correct that anything you put online is your resume. You are putting it out there for the public to see.

Two sites Constant-Content.com - you write, put a price, and wait till someone buys.

TheContentAuthority.com - There are always articles to be written there - however the rates are not very high.

    Oh, and don't forget Fiverr.

Why do people insist on making themselves look bad in this fashion? Surely it is much better to actually engage in the discussion rather than simply posting to increase your post count?

Or at least have the decency to append a nice and honest TL;DR!!

I, however, DID read the OP and as someone who's been on both sides of the equation - hiring and freelancing - I agree that it's silly how lackadaisical most of the 'writers' on this forum and other outsourcing venues can be.

When hiring a writer on oDesk or Elance, I think anyone can tell you of the need to sift through 10-20 resumes/bids to find a single hopeful candidate. People don't present themselves very well in their personal messages and then wonder why it's difficult to find work.

As a writer, I always try to keep this in mind; I enjoy putting my best foot forward in every piece of content I create, no matter how casual or private.

Of course, now I'm going to eat crow when someone points out an obvious error in this post.

The problem is that the perceived barrier to entry into the world of professional writing is extremely low. Just go and sign up at Elance or Odesk or any of a thousand other sites and boom -- you're a "writer."

The fact is that writing is a skill just like any other skill and just as knowing how to use Fantastico to install Wordpress doesn't make one a web designer, knowing how to sign up for one of these writing sites doesn't make one a writer.

Of course the flip side of the problem is that most clients don't understand what it means to hire a quality writer either. They focus on word counts and keyword density rather than quality of writing. I keep telling people to look at places like the New York Times, CNN, MSN News or a thousand other professional news sites. Notice the key difference between those and the cheap "article writers" that abound on the web. Even if you find someone capable of writing English without mistakes in grammar and spelling (itself not so simple), simply rehashing what you see elsewhere does not a writer make.

Real writers don't just provide information and keywords. Real writers tell stories which keep people interested and engaged. They do original research, including conducting interviews where necessary and don't just spin an article they find online. Sadly, most people don't seem to understand this or just don't care even if they do. Heck, I once had a client for whom I wrote a very long, well researched piece where I did conduct interviews and spent weeks constructing the article. I was told that the keyword density wasn't high enough and could I please remove or reword some of the quotes to make the keyword appear more often.

Agree entirely. One of the things you're alluding to is that when we judge writing quality we do it from our own point of reference. If our own written communication skills are lacking we're less likely to detect flaws in the work of other writers. In many ways that creates security in the lower echelons of the article writing industry, there will always be demand for lower quality work from people ill equipped to critique it for what it is.

That said, my beef here is with article writers who are looking for work yet don't seem to understand the importance of maintaining a high standard in everything they write publicly.

If I'm trying to sell fancy britches, I don't walk into a prospective client's office wearing tatty jeans (for want of a better analogy lol).

Indeed. As I have said elsewhere, a keyboard and a fiverr gig do not a writer make ...

This is the first uncomfortable step a self-labeled writer needs to take - assessing whether or not they truly have the skills to compete.

And then, the real tricky part comes into play. Namely, competent writers getting the people to comprehend this who really need to, well, comprehend this point - IMers flooding the net with low quality writing, thinking they are going to be making 5 gazillion dollars per month off of crappy websites while they sip pina coladas on a beach somewhere, outsourcing to a stable of $0.01/word writers.

And thinking the top spot they may currently occupy on the SERPs with crappy content is anything more than a temporary situation. 'Cause that's what it be - temporary.

I used to write full time and believe it or not, I found most of my highest paying gigs on craigslist. However, there are a lot of scammers there and want to try and get you to work for free. If you can figure out which ones are legit, you may be able to find you a great job there.

I agree with you, rooze. So many people out there are just throwing away perfect opportunities to show just what they can do when it comes to their writing. The chance to showcase their capabilities is right in front of them, and yet somehow, they don't even see it! It's either that, or a case of laziness.

If you're good at something, you should take advantage of every chance you get to promote that talent.

I have a friend who actaully went to 2 high end clients, one of them hired him and then he got all his other business from referrals.

I still think that this service is not the way to go if you want to create a 6 figure business though. Just saying.

One thing I wanted to add to this is that it goes beyond posts. I personally have checked the Warrior For Hire section and have read quite a few samples. In those samples, I have come across quite a few simple mistakes. If you have an ad in the WFH, make sure your samples are flawless.

There is no reason for them not to be and I doubt that I am the only one who has checked sample writings and noticed mistakes. Get the most out of the money you spend there - silly mistakes there will definitely cost you jobs, if they haven't already.

Great post! I know there are hundreds of thousands of writers out there, supposedly looking for work. If they'll look hard enough, it's definitely there I think sometimes "would-be" writers simply don't want to put forth the effort to find writing projects.

Of course, there are people that want everything handed to them on a "silver platter," but that's in every industry Strange, some of us writers have all we can handle, but perhaps we're just a bit more skilled at navigating the ropes.

I do actually have people email me on occasion wanting to write for me who can't even spell correctly in the email! It's actually sad, really, but some people just weren't meant to be writers.

Outsourcing sites are the best place to go if you are looking for writing gigs. I suggest elance, oDesk, freelancer. You can also try fiverr and textbroker. HTH.

And yet another person who didn't read the OP. BTW, just as an aside, most of those sites are not places to find serious writing work. You can't make a living writing articles for four dollars a piece on Fiverr or doing 1 cent per word articles on TextBroker.

Then again, the thread had nothing to do with asking for a list of content mill sites which are already floating around WF with significantly larger lists of sites included.
