beginner advice for video editing and free images

a newbie is making some websites, he wants to add video and images

what video editing software should be chosen?

where should images be sourced from?

ideally free, but if great quality can be had at low prices then that works too

A lot of people usually say windows movie maker but i don't think that is still being provided to newer PCs by Microsoft (from windows 7)

I think on Windows 7, windows live movie maker is installed and I have no idea if it can do a job or even if it can screen capture stuff to show basic tutorials

so with regard to video

- just a nice easy-to-use software that provides decent quality output and has one touch youtube installation and screen capture ability all in one program (not asking for too many bells and whistles)

and for images, ideally a decent variety of quality free royalty free images that are labelled ok for commercial use - where to go for these?

(royalty free = pay once, then use at your liberty, free royalty free = free and use at liberty)

I am also open to suggestions for a good image site with a flat monthly or yearly payment to use the images at will (quality images) rather than a pay per image option

thanks a lot folks

I'm happy with avs video editor
AVSMedia. Best software for you on today's market. Subscribe and download now!

but movie maker can do the job.

I don't use images in my videos. Just screen capture and some transitions. You can find some "free" images here but careful with TOS:

stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site

You could also need some background music. You will find some WSO that offer royalty music and you should also check Ginny site:

    Hey Nathan251

There's a free screen capture software called CamStudio that's been around for years. Also if you're videos are less than 5 mins long, you can use the free tool at Jing which is made by the same people who make the (pricey) Camtasia software.

If you're on a Mac I can recommend Screenflow

For stock images you have a few options including:
    iStockPhoto
    Dreamstime
Wikimedia Commons (be sure to check the license first)

    Hope this helps

are there free photos on istock?

as for stock.xchng. often the free photos say the owner wants to be notified and credited, how does one do this?

on video editing, is avs and camstudio enough for everything a beginner needs to make a decent (yet not spectacular video)

I have windows live movie maker on my laptop but I have heard it doesn't have as many features as the previous version windows movie maker - can windows live video maker do screen capture tutorials?

appreciate if anyone can answer this stuff or has other suggestions

You could give Lightworks a try. It's free (opensource)but supposedly of professional quality. I mentioned that becuase you said you don't like Camtasia, which I do.

    From Lightworks site:
Having cut hundreds of films such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Centurion and Shutter Island, it includes a full feature set of editorial tools -- from advanced trimming and media management, to stereoscopic support and realtime effects including multiple secondary colour correctors

As far as images I use 123RF, it's not free but I think it's a good price and easy license. You can buy credits or a plan. I think the least expensive plan is $79 for 3 months and can download 5 images a day of the highest resolution. I think it is worth the expense not to have to worry about licensing issues. Not to mention it's huge, they advertise 20,000 new images per day.
It's also pretty easy to be a contributor. I have a lot of photos on my personal site, I'm thinking about signing up as contributor and then posting on my site "if you like my photos you can buy them on 123RF", I get paid for selling my photos and as an affiliate if they buy someone else's. Take and upload 10 photos a day (I travel alot) in a year I have 3,000 on there. Then I might make $10 a month, woohoo! I wouldn't do it for the cash but I think it would look good to design clients if I say I'm also a professional photographer (not to mention that women love photographers).

I tried animoto lite, very easy to use and they do a nice polished job but then you get that animoto logo at the end of the videos which is not so good

I may try the AVS video editor and lightworks looks interesting too, but possibly too technical for me

I just want simple easy to use tools like animoto where you can publish a polished looking video fairly quickly, I realise I am asking a lot for something like that at a low price or free

Depends on what sort of editing you want to do! I am a newbie too, but have found Realplayer (free version) and Windows Movie Maker up to the job so far.

In terms of images, I second the suggestion of Wiki Commons. What do you want images of? If you have a decent camera yourself, get snapping! istock is good, but can be expensive. However, it's the old adage, if you pay peanuts, you get monkies!

I use final Cut Pro for video editing and find it rather easy. Trying to switch over to Premiere Pro soon tho.

As far as images, there have been some good suggestions on here. You can also just use Flickr and look for creative commons pictures. A lot of time all you have to do is give credit to the photographer.

guys, can I ask about animoto - if people are using it, do they not feel that the animoto watermark at the end of the videos ruins the video?
