Domains Hosted w/ Separate Companies

2 months ago I bought 1 domain and 1 year of hosting from Fusion(unlimited domains). Now I want to buy another domain. Fusion has no weekend support and I'm waiting for them to tell me what my password is(forgot). I found an EMD that I want to register as soon as possible. Would it be logical to just buy it from NameCheap right now?

You can buy it from namecheap, but it will probably cost you to have it transferred over. Having said that, it may come out to be about the same price. I don't have any experience with Fusion, but most of the time buying a domain through a hosting company is about twice as much as buying one through namecheap anyway. If you forgot your password is there not an option to click that says something like "forgot my password" at the Fusion login? If so just click that and they will send your password information to your email.

Can't you register a domain with one company and host with another? Or do they have to be with the same company?

Personally I never have my domains registered with the company who hosts my sites.

I use Site5 as my host and use Namecheap for registering domains .. I then just direct the DNS towards Site5, your host will be able to tell you this, usually it's in the help pages or it's the domain name servers your existing domain you have with your host is pointed to.

I like to keep them separate in case there are issues with either one.

Also some companies are just better for certain things, Namecheap is best for domains for example.

Just buy a new web hosting plan with 24/7 support and put the new web host's nameservers in your domain registration account for your domain name.

My advice is buy the domain from another company and don't transfer. You don't want to have your domain and hosting under the same company (if it is lousy company it may cause u a lot of damage). One more thing some companies like justhost will force you to pay for both hosting and domain and u will not be able to separate them. So, to keep a domain of $10 you will have to pay $100 for hosting with them.

    Yes.

The one thing to avoid is registering any domain and hosting it in the same place. That's all risk and downside.

Out of curiosity, why do you say this Alexa?

Because this forum (just like many other IM forums) is full of "horror stories" of the unforeseen "accidents" (some of them in fact "disasters") which people could so easily have avoided simply by registering and hosting in two different places.

Having the registration and the hosting in the same place is really very inadvisable. In a sense, admittedly, it only really matters if/when something goes wrong. (But, as we all know, that "only happens all the time").

If your host isn't also your registrar, then in the event of any accident/problem, if anything ever goes wrong with your hosting, you're in control, not them. And can avoid nightmares, disasters, long delays and entirely unexpected "ransom demands". And can re-host your site somewhere else the next day, minimising the commercial interruption.

Brad expresses it very well, with several well-known examples, in this post.

It's one of those issues which so many people look at and think to themselves "Eew, well, those are all other people and they must have done something wrong: it wouldn't ever happen to me". :p

Until someone on one of their lists reports them, even with absolutely no justification at all, to their host for alleged "spamming" and their website disappears and the host (in accordance with its TOS which few people have ever read all the way through at the time they registered the domain) suddenly wants hundreds of dollars to release the domain so they can get it back online somewhere else.

As a search of this forum will show, GoDaddy, in particular, is notorious for causing major problems and interruptions to its clients' businesses in this regard. But it can be done even by some "good hosts", too!

The point is that "whether something goes wrong" may not be within your own control - it can be just one of those pretty random things that Winston Churchill called "events".

Paul Myers' comment in this thread is significant, also.

Thanks Alexa, that's a fairly comprehensive answer!

I'll hold my hands up and say I actually hadn't considered this before, I have a few domain/hosting arrangements with the same company

I shall certainly be looking to migrate some of them over to other hosts to lessen the chances of this being an issue. I'd rather not learn to do this in the same way I learned to always, ALWAYS back up your websites...

Ok thanks everyone. I just registered the domain with NameCheap. Now how do I get my hosting from Fusion to the domain? In the process of buying the domain, I saw something about Nameservers and Referring Domains but I just left them as default.

When you are logged into Namecheap, click on the domain name you registered and on the left hand menu is the option

      "Domain Name Server Setup"

Select the option "Specify Custom DNS Servers (Your own DNS Servers)"

and put in whatever the name servers for Fusion are, eg:

      ns1.fusionhosting.com
      ns2.fusionhosting.com

A little late posting, sorry and perhaps a bit off topic, but I did not understand this post:

One more thing some companies like justhost will force you to pay for both hosting and domain and u will not be able to separate them. So, to keep a domain of $10 you will have to pay $100 for hosting with them.
I have some of my webhosting accounts with JustHost, but I don't have domains registered with them (no one with any experience uses the same host for their domain and web hosting), so I can't quite understand what point is trying to be made in the post from which the quote was taken. I'm pretty sure from my experience that the price mentioned ($100) is not accurate either.

        Just my thoughts,

        Jeff.

If I were you, I would follow the advice of the others and NOT have your domain names registered with the same company as your web hosts, as if you do have a problem, they'll have you over a barrell.

The domain registrar I love most is internet bs . It sends you an email every time your account is logged on to as a security feature, it's got loads of extra features, and it's just great in general. Go and give them a try.

Can anyone help me set up my site? I bought the domain from NameCheap and have a Fusion hosting account that allows unlimited domains. On NameCheap I specified the DNS servers(1 and 2 for Fusion). What do I have to do on Fusion(my hosting site)?

    Thanks

At your hosting company go into your control panel|dashboard|cpanel|whatever they call it

then go to Add On Domains
and enter your new domain name

It may take some time for the name to propagate to your host, but sometimes it is almost instant
