Is spoofing an IP address just paranoid?

Hi,

I was wondering if spoofing an IP address, using IP masking software just paranoid behavior. I set up a lot of different web 2.0 properties, e-mail accounts and blogs using different aliases but a lot of them are coming from my IP which appears to be static. This in my opinion is a significant foot print but is it something that Google will pick up on?

Cheers

Its a good practice to use a vpn when doing SEO related tasks. You don't want all of your SEO efforts to be deleted do you? Keep doing what your doing..

      Hi,

Different IP means different location. If you consider location as important in SEO, then use VPN when posting articles.

It is always safer in terms of security and creates more opportunities at the same time. Check out this WF blog article about VPN.

VPN? VPNing to where and between what? Are you talking about setting up a VPN with a remote proxy server? I really don't get how this can help but I've never came across VPN in this context before.

      Hi,

There is no need to set-up VPN on your own. There are providers already.

You can use a VPN to change your IP address when posting articles.

If a VPN provider has several servers around the world, they would have 1,000s of IP numbers.

If you choose to logon their VPN location in Switzerland, the you would have a Swiss IP.

If you're logged at their VPN in Hong Kong, you would have an Hong Kong IP number.

In my opinion if you use different services; different social sites, different article directories, different press release sites, different bookmarking sites, different web profiles, then your information will be backlinked from a wide array of servers and accommodating IP addresses. I think the IP address of the server has more weight than what IP address a particular account holder has. (which shouldn't be publicly accessible. only the service provider would have access to this information. to my knowledge this isn't distributed with outside parties.)

What about if I am targeting local searches? My back links should all be from the same area. Am I right on this?

If you go to Joe's Blog and leave a comment, with your link in it, Google doesn't know what IP was used for that backlink (unless it's wordpress, they are running akismet, and is akismet linked to google? Far stretch though...). Google uses the IP address of the website, not your IP that you had while leaving the comment...

I would switch to a different ISP where I could easily change my IP address. Ask your ISP if your IP is static or dynamic. If it is static, your screwed. If it is dynamic, you may need a good router (linksys) and change the mac address of the router. power cycle the modem. boom, new IP. I use this for SENukeX. I don't use proxies for senuke or a VPN, as both options result in lower success rates. I just change my IP, run senuke, run ccleaner, change ip, repeat...

For other things, I can see where a VPN would come in handy. Especially if your on a static IP and changing providers isn't an option. I have an awesome VPN provider with servers all over the US. About $7 got me 3 months, each referral extends my service for 2 weeks. So after your initial paymen, you could continue to use it for free given you refer in 2 people a month! Oh, and they don't keep any logs at all, so no record of your searches

I was looking at "Hide My Ass" VPN software - is this really necessary for logging into forums and leaving comments/signatures for backlinks?
What are the downsides of not doing anything?
I have also submitted a bunch of PAD files for software releases in the past (like 500 at a time thru Robosoft) - should these also be protected behind a proxy or something????
Would anyone recommend "Hide My Ass" or is there a cheaper equivalent? Is HMA overkill? I don't have a lot of faith in "free or really cheap proxies".
Do I need to change my IP by using a proxy server, or is it necessary to go through a VPN as well?

Any clarification and personal experiences you can shed on this subject would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.
