Domain Registrant does not have a GoDaddy account. Can I recover this domain?

I have a customer that is having trouble with his current host, who also registered his domain. The domain has the customer's name listed in the registrant fields, but the host's info listed in the other sections.

There does not seem to be a customer account in GoDaddy's system for the customer's email address.

Note: Yes, I know they have a recovery procedure, but the area he is in does not require a business license, and there is a company name listed in the registration.

I had the thought of creating an account with godaddy using his email address.

My question: Any chance the domain would appear in his account afterwards?

I'm going to get permission from the customer to try this tomorrow... I was hoping someone's done this successfully before.

Why would a domain name magically appear in an account just because you're using someone's email address?

Search GoDaddy's help section for information on how to transfer a domain name. You'll need the current host's cooperation during the transfer, so don't burn any bridges before the domain is in your customer's new account.

When you register a domain through your host, the host is the official registrant. They renew it every year. In order to get the domain to Godaddy, he will first have to register an account at Godaddy. He will then have to contact the host and get a code to transfer the domain to Godaddy.

Without the hosts' cooperation, the domain will stay right where it is. This is the one reason that when I open a hosting account, I use a junk domain to open it ... never a domain I care about, even if I have to register a crap domain to get it done.
