Do you have your own 'work station' at home?

Hi

If you work at home all day or run your business along side a day job, do you have your own work station or just have you laptop on your knees?

Do you have a desk and your own mini office so you feel its time to work and no distractions or do you do research and IM sat on the sofa with your laptop on your lap and the TV on in the background?

Is it best to have one or not?
What works for you?

My husband and I long ago turned the fourth bedroom in our home into an office. It's a big room, 15'x15' with an adjoining walk-in wardrobe and a window overlooking the front lawn, so it's a very pleasant place to work. His desk is to the right of the window and mine to the left; and with the walk-in we have plenty of space to work and store "stuff".

I feed the birds under the tree immediately outside the window, so I have lots of nature to entertain me. It's an ideal environment..

For me I use my personal computer to run my business.I would not advise this at all! lol, my brain is so used to watching youtube videos that I always get distracting, I'm getting another desktop very soon though to set myself up in a new environment and reprogram my brain so to speak.

I have a "work station". You should've made this thread a poll!

Having the TV on in the background is a recipe for disaster in my mind. Distractions lead to inefficiency!... Which lead to failure.

That being said, my office space is inhabited by a 75 gallon fish tank.. a 65 gallon fish tank.. and a 10 gallon fish tank. I do sometimes watch the inhabitants while I mull over some idea or concept I've just come across. Did I mention I like fish and turtles?.. haha

Still, a dedicated work space is a great thing to have when you work at home.

Even before I worked "from home", I often had my work follow me home. When I brought it home with me I'd always throw a tie around my neck while I was working so my family would know not to disturb me because I was "at work". From my experience, it's important to separate your free time space from your work space in one way - otherwise the two can mix for poor results.

    Cheers,
    -Adrian

Office space at home, one division just like any normal office: desks, computers, phones, whiteboards, TV (so we can listen to Mezzo all day), office furniture, books, magazines, flowers, window facing the green park just outside my house... Except for some pajamas every now and then this is just like any other office

Eh, kind of. I sit in the back room on the ground floor. It's supposed to be a guest bedroom but we never have guests so it's always a mess. And I have kids, so inevitably there's 15 Zhu Zhu Pets, fruit snacks and flowers, leaves and artwork they've done on my desk lol

I don't have a station at all. I use my laptop. Sometimes I am lying down. Sometimes sitting. Rarely if ever at a desk. I spend time on my website improving it for a while and adding content. Then I take a break and read sports news. Then rinse and repeat.

I use a spare bedroom for my office. The room also doubles as a "gym" (exercise bike), but mainly I have a desk, computer, printer and constant supply of coffee as needed...

When I was working my offline job, I used my laptop during lunch and breaks and when at home, I have a home office with a complete work station. My home office is where I spend most of my time now (I think it's the only place I actually live! )

Since I quit my day job (Woo-hoo!!) I very rarely use my laptop unless I am away from my home office or if I'm having desktop PC issues.

As far as having the TV on while working - I find it somewhat distracting especially when something good is on. I tend to lose focus on what it is I'm doing. It's not a very good practice and I recommend not getting in the habit of doing such a thing especially if you are writing an eBook or article or a report and things of such.

Any type of distraction is not a good thing. Unless of course you are a genius with a photographic memory! lol

I find having music on in the background is always nice but the TV distracts me too much even if it's in the background. If something awesome sounding is happening - I tend to want to go check it out. Not good when you're in the middle of something!

I love how different everyone's work area is and how different everyone works lying down, on the coach, surrounded by fish, part gym.. awesome.

Me, armchair furthest away from the TV with my laptop resting on a little coffee table. TV is usually on, sometimes muted if no ones watching and sometime loud when they are watching. Can be distracting sometimes but I tend to get really deep into my work and forget to take breaks so the TV kind of reminds me to do that. Did try working lying down but not nearly as efficient as when sitting up. Never tried standing though. I live in my pajamas. Currently wearing my blue and white polka dot ones... They're H&M if anyone's interested..

I have a regular table in my room. Laptop on it. Calculator on the left of me as we speak. Phone on the right. Printer behind the laptop and that is about it.

I work from home and have a spare bedroom set up as an office with a couple of computers, printers and desks etc... makes it easier for me to focus being away from the rest of my apartment... I tend to get easily distracted otherwise...

I have a one of my rooms converted into an office, I find it helps me escape distractions and helps me focus.

I also juggle a few different projects, so I've got a few whiteboards and other bits and pieces to help keep me organised.

St the moment it's a desktop computer, with all the needed material in the vicinity.

It is not the ideal work environment but I manage very well.

Planning to make a special room designated only for work in the near future.

Since I struggle on and off again with carpal tunnel syndrome/tendinitis (no one knows...), I pretty much have to work at a desk or stand. I still don't have the ideal ergonomic setup, but it's a lot better for my hands and wrists than working on a couch, which is what I used to do before the CTS struck.

I've got tons of sunshine in my office room, so it's all good though.

    Sunshine stimulates the brain!

I love spying on things like this I have tons of bookmarks like this

I love interior design, unique home office set-ups and, of course, working at home. I visit IKEA or some local furniture store at least twice a month, even if I don't buy anything.

I have a home office with two desks, two chairs, two desktop computers, a white board, and usual office machines. It's my shrine I'm a bookworm who got a library of 100s (1000s according to my friends) books, and a vinyl collector who got lots of records (but really lots of them). Add multiple towers of CDs and magazines to this. I've been really trying hard to organize all of this while trying not to distract when I'm working.

When things distract me much, or I get bored sitting in the same place for hours, I go work in the living room or in my bed or in the balcony which has a great seaview.

When I need human interaction, I pack my laptop and go out.
