Candle Business good idea for US/China Market?

Hi

Just a quick question

If i was to sell candles in the US/China with my own unique 'theme' to them, do you think it would be a good idea? Is there a market place for candles, scented etc?

thank you

Whether or not its a good idea or not is irrelevant, what you need to know is whether people are buying or not. I would say there is a market for it as from experience there is a market for anything. You just need to do keyword research and find out what the hot buying keywords are and build your site around this

Scented candles have good market in US. I usually see them sold to raise funds for charity, church, and other organizations. I suggest you do further research on your "theme" and target market. Good luck!

Well geez sparky, when you click on the link in your sig it boasts about all the US companies that buy those products. So someone's lying here or you're stooging for a website you don't own.

      QuirkieGifts,

My wife can't get enough scented candles, and the same goes for her friends. Apparently woman love those things.

Truth be told, if they came in a bacon scent I'd have them all over the house :p

    Hi KCooper,

Scented candles are popular in Malaysia. I can find such candles in perfume shops and racks full of them in supermarkets.

I like perfumes and scented candles so I noticed them everywhere I go. I've seen them sold in Singapore, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Egypt, Oman, UK, France, Germany and Switzerland.

When there is demand, there would be supply. Thus safely assuming that there are markets for scented candles.

In China, the wholesale cost of scented candles from various themes and sizes are extremely cheap. I could buy a candle that last me for 2 weeks daily use of 1 hour for about $3 retail. For wholesale, the same candle would cost me $1 exactly. This price can be lowered probably further at 10% to 20% based quantity. It is difficult to beat the China market.

I think you can actually order them based on your custom themes in Guangzhou. This city is not far from Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Macao.

Certainly, if you want to produce custom candles at a good price you want in your local market, you need to make them unique and a novelty to own one. Then you don't need the China suppliers.

If you want to try the China market, then you ought to go for the up-market clienteles who look for lavish imported goods. This is not difficult to reach, with the right strategy.

      Hi

thank you for your comment. This is very helpful.

I sell candles on my website at the minute, scented ones but my website is currently uk based. I would like to branch off and sell candles but the market in china sounds cheap and may struggle. Im planning on making the candles unique along with scents but design work on them to and accessories something along those days. All the other countries you mentioned, wow! Would this just be a .com site and you can sell them to those countries or a website with same currency for each country? Im not 100% clued up on how currencies etc work internationally you see.

To have the right strategy for upmarket clienteles would be great i just need to think where to start.

You're really into candles. I'm not in that business. Just commenting as an active user.

The best strategy is get to know your market. There is nothing better than being there and learn about their culture closely. Somewhat like business intelligence.

Of course, no one can be everywhere. Lots of money and time needed. So the best resource for you is knowing people who have been there. Get them to share what they know.

I'll share my personal perspectives here.

Middle-East : Gulf Arabs. They love scents - perfume and incense ( from fragrant wood, tree barks and saps ). It is a culture to burn incense everyday. I've seen some using candles and liquid-based aromatizers. So most users of scented candles are expatriates and some Arabs.

East Asians : Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, China & Japan. They love perfume and burn fragrant incense ( mainly for religious rituals ). With the regional promotions of the benefits of aromatherapy in the last decade, there is an increased use of scented candles and scented oil at homes and also in Spas. Some homes use expensive scented candles as decoratives only.

South Asians : Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Maldives. They love perfume and burn fragrant incense ( mainly for religious rituals ). There is an increase in the use of scented candles and oil in spas of Sri Lanka and Maldives. This market is a bit weak for your products.

So that's my limited personal observation without facts and figures to back them up.

The best start for the China market is join the expatriate network club. Zero cost. There are a couple of web sites where they share opportunities, ask questions and make offers. Most cities in the coast of China have their own expatriate network sites. Some even based on nationalities.

Since you're looking for the Chinese upscale market, these cities came to mind - Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hong Kong. In those cities there are areas for the upscale. Something you can buy for $10 in a common market could fetch 3 to 10 times more in the posh markets.

PM me, I'll pass you more info.
