Looking for a wordpress tutorial

Hello, I am all set to start working on a website and thought I would use wordpress. I have discovered wordpress isnt as easy as some people make it sound.

I have zero experience using wordpress and am looking for a newbie wordpress guide that will show me how to build a website, not blog, using wordpress.

I am building a content rich website based around a niche in health. I basically want a static main page that will have offer a free ebook...I am using aweber, and then I plan on creating other pages with links on the homepage.

I want to do something similar to this site...at least layout wise

High Cholesterol Foods - High Cholesterol Symptoms

thanks for any help

I'm bumping this up, as I'd like a wordpress tutorial too. Some of it is pretty simple but other parts of it bog me down. Their help section isnt that helpful.

Use Google (it can be your best friend sometimes) and search for free wordpress tutorials and you will find many of them. Look through them until you find one that works best for what you want to learn.

That is the Thesis Theme. You can set your homepage to be a static page. Look in the warrior for hire section. You can find someone to help you configure a theme to your liking. Most courses or info products won't show you how to heavily modify a theme but will walk you through the process of creating pages, posts and changing some basic things.

Anything beyond that you will need a course on css to modify a lot of it. However if you purchase the Thesis theme you can change a lot of the options yourself with the theme options but depending on how intense you want to modify things you may be better off hiring some help.

I offer a tutorial in my signature for free. You can also find videos on Youtube for specific parts of Wordpress. Also search with Bing or Yahoo, not Google cause they are evil, and you can find plenty of free info on how to use the different parts of Wordpress.

Yeh that got me too all the guys on this site talking about how "simple" wordpress is untill you actually try installing it.

I'll admit after 5+ years of using dreamweaver, wordpress is nowhere near as hard in terms of getting a site together. I love how easy it is to just use the shortcodes for everything which is great.

The problem is all the stupid little "glitches" that happen when you're trying to set it up properly. And I know how dumb this is going to sound. But 2 months ago when I moved over to wordpress I installed it in a subdomain. I realized after about a week I need it on our main domain, otherwise you can't see the wordpress site.

I have read every article on google about how you move the site over... and I STILL am yet to figure it out. ALL I NEED is for the site to show on our main domain. But every single time I attempt moving the site, I break wordpress and have to reinstall it. This has really annoyed me like you wouldn't believe. Some people say "just change the permalinks" other people tell you to uninstall it and reinstall it on the main domain. But then when I do all this stuff it never works right.

Does anyone know WHERE I can go to find someone who won't charge us a fortune to just move the site for us? I've checked fiver, I've posted on CL and all these programmers try quoting us like $200 to set a site up. I TELL THEM "we don't need a website made for us, we just want wordpress installed properly so we can use it ourselves on the right domain".

I mean can't someone on fiver do this? How much work does this really involve?
I refuse to pay even $100 just for someone to install wordpress on our main domain seems like it should take 10mins max for someone who knows WP.
Anyone know where I can go to get this sorted for a reasonable price?

    thanks!

      Hi Redshifted!

I won't try to pretend that I'm an expert in Wordpress coz I really am not. I'm still learning. But let me just point some bad experiences in WP that made me learn more.

I was forced to delete everything in my add-on domain, for I thought I needed to use that domain for something else. I exported it using the Tools and imported it to another add-on domain. It worked fine except that I had to manually install the images on each post/page. That was better than rewriting all articles then. The new add-on domain is what's in my signature.

My main domain doesn't have anything on it since the name just doesn't make sense for now. But I'll try to install the same wml file in it and let you know.

      I hope this made sense.

      Thanks!

Your site is a thesis theme. Yes, you can set your homepage as static page.

Anyway, you can find tutorials at youtube and ask google.
