How Important is a keyword Domain Name?

Just want to hear peoples thoughts on how important an exact match keyword domain name is? I have heard from some that is it an absolute MUST for SEO and others that it helps but is not necessarily critical and that strong backlinks, quality content, etc. is much more important.

Would the availability of a keyword domain name make or break your decision to try and rank for said keyword?

What ever you are searching online you will see that in the first 10 results there is at least 1 website with your keywords or a variation of you keywords in domain name.

It is very important and you will have an easier job ranking your site hire if you have your keyword in the domain name...

I believe on site web optimisation counts for roughly 20% of SEO and the majority of the rest of SEO is generated through back links. This does not mean Keyword domain names or EMD is unimportant though, as every little helps. It might be worth checking out this video from Matt cutts who is part of the Google webmaster channel explaining EMD

It's the most powerful step in your SEO efforts, at best using a *.com domain, second best *.net if the first isn't available.

Whenever doing SEO i have always wondered is it really the domain that is making this person rank, i think it does play a good part in ranking.

On the other hand the person buying the keyword rich domain is buying it to rank for that particular phrase and there SEO efforts are pushed towards those keywords. So they of course would rank well.

Matt Cutts mentions in his video that the weighting of the domain name doesn't really play a part. I have my doubts.

Thanks for the replies and thanks for the video ddshosting. Seems like keywords in the domain is still a pretty big deal. Definitely going to keep this in mind before I start my next project.

  IMHO keyword rich domain names are hugely important. Currently google seems to greatly favor exact match domain names.

It's important for mini sites to get them ranked quickly, but it is not really an issue for bigger authority sites.

IMHO, it is much better to buy an aged domain so you can build links more aggressively.

I would still go for a keyword rich domain even for authority sites, it makes the SEO work less tedious and demanding.

It is quite important since it makes ranking much much easier

You will be able to rank even if you don't have an optimized domain name, but it will require a lot more effort on your part. When you're choosing your domain name, you are also deciding, to a small extent, the level of effort you will need to put in to rank for that.

but there are many domains out their that dont have the keyword in and still rank highly..

Does it mean if you dont have the keyword in your url then your highly unlikely to be ranked and get noticed etc?

Ive seen domains like Amore for selling curry spices and LucyLemon for selling jewellery. These dont say the main 'source' of the product there selling but it will be backed up with keywords. is that right?
