I have a few websites which attract decent traffic but need a good list building / mailing list program. What would you recommend?

If you are refering to autoresponders, check out Aweber or GetResponse. Easy to use and they have some nice templates you can use on your websites to collect the email address etc.

    Thanks Jit.

I have a site which sells affiliate goods and want to email special offers and deals on a regular basis. Do you think a mailing list would work?

I get around 500 uniques a day on one of the sites.

Definitely. Either Aweber or GetResponse is perfect for you to start off. You can schedule when the emails goes out etc. Personally I would go with GetResponse buts its really up to you. Use the free trial to eval first.

If you are strapped for cash, you should also check out cheaper alternatives to aweber and getresponse, such as imnica mail. The cost of aweber and getresponse can be prohibitive for starters if your sales funnel is poor. Of course, aweber and getresponse will get you the best delivery rates.

    Just my 2 cents.

well to start with get a good auto-responder. i would aweber ive never had any problems with them and its easily the most important tool in my business

next you need set up a sales funnel within your auto-responder but dont worry about getting an entire sales funnel built right away because they generally develop over time

this would be a good start

Sales funnel? I presume this is a group of emails you send out to warm up your customers and tempt them to buy?

Yip. I use Aweber as a result of a recommendation from my pal who makes a lot of money from IM. Apparently it's the one with the best delivery rate.

What are you selling? Your e-mail sequence, frequency of selling etc may vary depending on your niche.

There are several free services out there as well but the problem with most of those is they do not allow commercial activity. At least one flat out bans you if you send out affiliate links OR if they visit your site and see you are an affiliate marketer, don't even need to send out ads at all just knowing you are an affiliate marketer they ban you.

I guess I am saying, stay away from FREE services unless it is a hobby site you NEVER plan to make money with.

I don't know about now but in the past GR was unable to accept certain types of credit cards, my credit union refused to allow payments to go through and I was NOT going to go to another bank to get a CC to use as that would of caused other issues with credit and high interest rates, fees and other things I don't have to deal with. Hassle was too much to go through for me to use GR. Also they didn't have access to paypal at the time, not sure if they do now or not.

Other than payment issues, GR was pretty good until they switched up their plans to match aweber and at that point it didn't really matter which one you went with as both were pretty identical except Aweber is actually located in the United States and GR is not.

If that has any bearing on you.

Now, if you have your own VPS or dedicated server you can purchase your own mailing list software that runs on your own hosting. You have to deal with complaints and white/black lists yourself though. Google or Bing or Yahoo mailing list managers and you will find several. Price at last time I looked for a self hosted solution was in the range of $300.00 to 20k+ depending on what you needed.

Another option you may want to think on is to JV or offer to rent a list spot from someone that currently use one of the services. Make sure you put into writing the situation and who owns the list though, if you consider doing this.

Not sure if anyone would agree to do that or not as it could seriously up their own costs if your list becomes popular.

    +1 for Aweber.

Yes it's a bit more pricey then some (if you want a super affordable email marketing service check out Imnica) but they have great delivery rates, lots of cool features and and give you a tonne of useful stats about your subscribers and and how they interact with your broadcasts.

There are tons you can pick from.

The industry standard is Aweber, but GetResponse is a good alternative and offers a free 30 day trial.

If you are tight on a budget check out ListWire. Ive used it in the past and it does what it says it will and isnt as limited as one would think.

Stick with aweber, getresponse, 1shoppingcart or one of those.

The free ones are free for a reason. Treat your business like a business.

Most of the professional ones have a 30 day dollar trial or so, so if you have a tiny list it won't really cost you much anyway.

I use MailChimp, very easy to use and it's free for you to send 12k emails per month (If i'm not mistaken) but it's worth checking it out. If you have want a paid mailing list, go with Aweber or GetResponse.

I have always dealt with Aweber. If your getting 500 new hits a day then you can easily put a pop up lead capture box and capture at least 150 of those into emails. All it takes is creating some bait that your target audience would be willing to pay for and walla you have a free gift to give away.
